He had not been expecting her to return his show of affection since she'd shied away from any kind of touch before. So he considered her small touch a step in the right direction for her to become a part of the pack. That was his ultimate goal for the yearling, to turn her into a wolf that would be not only useful to the pack but also one who was loyal.
Tulip was young yet and very impressionable, someone taught her to be the way she was. Kajika believed that could be changed and that she could be taught something different. Who better than he and Moonshadow, her motherly demeanor and his belief that she could be something different. With enough positive experiences and encouragement he felt she would see a different and better life for herself in time. Kajika didn't expect it to be right away obviously, she'd been under someone else's guidance for a year. He was a patient man and would allow her to see that what she had been given in the cove was a good thing.
What they found when they finally reached the moose carcass again were three coyotes picking at the meat. Tulip had been right once she realized what was going on and Kajika felt a bit of pride in the yearling. He was about to chase them off when Tulip started acting strangely first by cutting him off so he couldn't go closer. He shook his head when she spoke, “What do you mean Tulip?” For the first time he wasn't sure what the girl was trying to tell him. He did as she asked though since she hadn't steered him wrong yet.
