The snake hung from the boy’s mouth, limply swaying with each step he took. It was a dark green, the scales on its side white. The yearling didn’t exactly know what kind of snake it was, but it didn’t matter- he knew it was common. He had seen snakes like it before, but had never been able to catch one. They were odd. They were too quick and thin. He carried it proudly, a smug grin placed on his lips. It was his first (successful) attempt at killing a serpent. It was rubbery and odd feeling in his mouth, but he was determined to eat it. He had killed the darn thing. He deserved at least a bit of meat from it, right?

He had been walking for two days- nearly nonstop. Travelling came so naturally to him, particularly when it came to climbing the mountain. It was physically draining, but rewarding. He knew he was getting stronger. Moving so much made him hungry, jolting his attention back to his meal. He didn’t consider the taste. He hadn’t considered the texture much either, but it was bothersome. He tried his best to ignore it, keeping his tongue off the slimy underbelly. How could a creature be so rough and soft at the same time? It was wrong. He carried it a few more steps, stopped, then spat it out.

He considered his options for a few seconds. Should he eat it? It didn’t seem so appealing anymore, now that the accomplishment was wearing off. He didn’t like the way it felt, but what was he going to do- just leave it here? He pawed at it like a child, wincing when he felt the scales against his paw.

Mako Coho
Mako blinked at the scene that presented itself before him: a smallish wolf toeing a sort of mangled looking snake on the ground. He wasn't much a fan of snakes, they sort of creeped him out if he was honest, long and slippery like an eel but somehow managed to propel themselves forward without the help of water. Mako generally tried to give them a wide berth, as apparently his great-uncle had been killed by a snake bite. He knew not all of them to be venomous, but still it struck him as odd to see somebody playing around with one, dead or alive.

"What are you doing with that thing?" Mako found himself asking, the confusion clearly written across his face.

Caught off guard by the voice, the yearling stomped on the snake and jumped. He had been too focused on the creature beneath his paws to catch the smell on the breeze, to hear the steady paws of another wolf creep up behind him. His heart felt tense, beating against his chest painfully. A little squeak escaped his mouth. Overall, it was clear that the scruffy looking boy was not expecting visitors. While he was not aggressive, he certainly wasn’t inviting- not right away.

He settled down after a moment, glaring at the other wolf with a deadpan expression. His heart beat slowed down, his muscles relaxed, but his face stayed tense and unamused. His visitor was large, older than him, smelt like pack- everything the yearling disliked. He grunted, then returned his attention back to the dead snake. He rolled it over, back and forth, analyzing the shape of the weird noodle-esque body. “You know how to eat it?”

He lowered his nose to it and gave it a soft poke, testing the flesh. It did not feel natural. It was not meaty in the way he had expected it.

Mako Coho
Mako stared slack-jawed. He clearly had not expected that question. "Uhh," He started, eyebrows furrowed as he tried to figure out if the yearling was joking or not. Was this a trick question or something? For one, a snake hardly seemed like good eating even if he'd never had one himself. The scales and bones and everything else seemed like it wouldn't leave much room for meat. And snake bites were poisonous, but were their bodies? Mako had no idea. But as far as the actual act of eating them went, well that seemed pretty straight forward.

The more Mako pondered on it, the more he figured that this kid was trying to pull his leg. Mako snuffed, he'd give him one right back. "Well, you just put it in your mouth and chew?" He smirked. "You do know how to do that, right?"

That had not been the answer Vaken was looking for. As obvious as it was, the boy was still bewildered. He opened his jaws, clenching his teeth around the snake, but did not chew. Instead, he tossed it angrily away from him. He flicked his head to the left, away from his companion, but towards the trees. It flew threw the air, flying into the woods and landing with a soft plop on a while of leaves. He could see it still, but it was far enough away for him to comfortably relax. That solved that.

Once it was away from him, he could pretend it didn’t exist. All the energy wasted on hunting it for nothing. Disappointing, but not worth the pain it would induce to chew it up. The texture was all wrong, and Vaken suspected the taste would be too. It wasn’t worth it. He sighed, looked up at the sky in defeat, then took a seat. He couldn't smell it anymore. He had rid himself of every reminder of its cruel existence. Just to make sure, he took another sniff- tasting the air. It was definitely gone now, replaced with something more invigorating. Deer? He looked around, desperate to see where the source was coming from, but couldn’t. Had the gods blessed him today, or not? “Where is it?” He hissed, lowering his body to the ground. “I’m starving.”

Mako Coho
Mako was thrown for a loop again when the scruffy brown yearling suddenly and unceremoniously tossed the dead snake into the bushes without a word. Mako blinked off into the swaying leaves where the serpent had vanished before slowly turning his head back to the kid, who had plopped himself down and started looking around and sniffing. Mako remained standing, at a safe distance, watching with guarded curiosity as he tried to puzzle out what this kid's deal was.

Mako could smell it too, his ears pricked to catch the sound of unsteady hooves over the earth and desperate bleating. A fawn, an easy catch all things considered, but he wasn't sure whether this scrappy little wolf would be up to the task. "Hey man, you doin' alright there?" Mako asked tentatively. What was Mako supposed to do with a declaration like"I'm starving"? It had yet to be seen whether this wolf even knew the mechanics of eating, let alone catching prey. "You... You wanna go hunting or something?"

Vaken looked at the stranger as if he was the one being weird. “Of course,” he mumbled, sniffing the air again to track the creature. It was hard to place, but the yearling lifted his ears forward to catch the sound of steps. It was distant, but definitely within grasp. A lone fawn, light footsteps, quiet. His belly started to grumble. He had been eating well the last few days, but it didn’t matter. He had been expecting a meal from his snake, and lost it. Now he was hungry. “I could use the help,” he added, glancing towards his visitor. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to take it down himself, he really didn’t want to even have to try- not after exerting himself to catch the serpent.

Normally brash and distrusting of pack wolves, the yearling was too hungry and impulsive to be skeptical of his company at all. He didn’t ask any questions, not even names. He just wanted the help, and the meal. This wolf was big, surely he could offer a little bit of strength for the cause? Vaken let his tail swish behind him, his ears still perked and attentive to the sound of rustling leaves. He wanted to start moving, to start the hunt. He lowered his belly to the ground and sniffed again, searching. The scent came from the north, but was growing stronger. The animal was walking towards them. How much easier could it get?

They were downwind, but any noise could alert their prey. The boy took a step forward, timid and careful. He didn’t want to startle off the creature.

Mako Coho
Mako's experience with this yearling so far had felt like one giant non-sequitur. He just felt like he was missing something or there were things gone unsaid that left Mako feeling like he was missing a step. Mako shrugged his broad shoulders, ruffling the coarse fur along them and deciding that he'd just have to get used to it.

"You could use some help, alright." Mako mumbled under his breath.

Strange hunting companion aside, Mako was pretty confident in this hunt. As long as momma deer or the herd didn't show up in the next few minutes, this should be as easy as picking berries off a bush. Mako eyed the yearling, trying to determine what he'd be good at at a glance, and wondering if he could trust him to follow directions. The kid was small, probably faster on his feet than Mako and less likely to get tangled up in the underbrush like Mako's hulking form tended to.

"You think you can sneak around behind it? Then just chase it towards me." He whispered.

OOC: hunting dem 2/3

The boy didn’t mind being sized up by the wolf. He knew his stature wasn’t much, but he wasn’t ashamed. He was proud of his smallness. It made him quick and sneaky, agile. He wasn’t a brute force, but he was light on his feet and smart. He puffed out his chest and waited for the other wolf to speak, his eyes moving from the prey to the stranger. “I can,” he assured, nodding his head quickly to assure him. Vaken was a good chaser. He could herd the creature towards the man easily. He had already began to move, slow steps at first, then quietly weaving around. It didn’t take him long to position himself, watching the hind of the fawn slowly gravitate forwards.

He couldn’t see how things could go wrong. As long as the grey wolf kept up his side of the bargain, Vaken knew they’d succeed. It was almost too easy. The creature was already moving towards Mako, already falling into their trap. All the yearling had to do was speed up the process and startle the baby deer, trick him into racing straight into the other man. Together, surely, they could take it down. He waited for a few moments, patiently planning his every move.

He took in a few breaths, then jolted out of his hiding place and towards the prey, aiming to nip at its heels.
