As the smell of smoke filled the air the stench of the coyotes began to fade. He frequented the borders more often, perhaps in hopes that his pumpkin-eyed friend would return or that a strange, mud-dusted girl would appear, and would occasionally wander a few metres beyond the Edge territory. Neither friend appeared. But the coyotes did not make an appearance either. His expeditions grew longer as he braved the forest beyond the shallows. Some days he did not want to return home. Some days he hoped he would bump into a feral coyote. But he always returned. As much as he wanted to chase after his greyscale friend he knew that she needed to be alone. Find herself. Soothe the demons that taunted her mind. Do whatever she needed to do. Without him. He just needed to stop being such a big baby about it. It was not about him. Or how he felt. It was about her. It would always be her, and he would always put her first. Even when he wanted to be selfish.

He ventured further south today, his gangly legs dragging him through the forest. His world had grown duller since the departure of his closest friend. The colours he had once adored had become muted; desaturated. They no longer captivated him. Instead they had grown quiet and uninteresting. Boring.

He brushed past the familiar red ferns in search of the glen he often frequented with his absent friend. Sachiel did not know why he was searching for the glen, especially when he was trying to move forward and be happy, but something was drawing him south. Smoke lingered in the air but it was not as thick as it once was. It made his nose twitch and muted the colours even more but he did not mind. The change of scenery was nice, even if it wasn’t ideal conditions.

A pair of inky black jaws parted in a silent yawn. Perfect rows of pearly white teeth flashed, while the tip of her pink tongue curled, up against the roof of her mouth. Tzila was pleased that at last, the infestation of coyotes was gone at last. Her one and only run in with the mongrels by the rocky river was plenty enough, thank you. One could argue that she had only escaped in one piece because of that pack wolf, @Askan who had helped her out. She would more likely call it luck. That he was there in the right time and place. But as she found, nothing could seem to stay peaceful for too long.

Deep in the heart of a secluded glen, of what had once been a thriving pack's home, the drifter had made herself comfortable. Atop a sun soaked slab of stone, which rose up out of the soil, partially shaded by the magnolia trees which gave this place it's name, she rested. For once, she didn't mind the rays of sunlight, letting the warmth they provided pierce her fur and warm her skin. She supposed she could enjoy it just this once. Come winter, she may very well yearn for such a comfort. But the breeze had to go and ruin the moment. Tickling her nose was the scent of smoke. Her eyes squinted shut, tighter. Try as she might, she couldn't ignore that god awful smell. With a cough, she picked her head up, glaring disdainfully in the direction from which it came. A sour expression plastered itself to her face, complete with pinned ears and narrowed silver eyes. Geeze, couldn't she catch a break around here? If it wasn't damn coyotes then it was smoke.

It was oddly quiet in the glen but it was comforting. He was still a little apprehensive about coyotes lurking about but Sachiel was not worried about picking a fight. He had evaded them too many times before; it was time he actually stood up for himself if one of the mangy creatures decided to make an appearance. Maybe get a cool scar or two. It wouldn’t go over well with Askan or Reyes but it might help Sachiel feel alive again. A part of him that had left with Hawthorne.

He meandered, aimlessly, through the glen as he tried to avoid going to the place where they had hid their most prized possessions. But, as he walked, he began to realize that the glen was where they had become Selwyns… where they had become a family… A sour taste filled his mouth almost immediately as a frown creased his handsome features. His expression darkened as he kicked at the ground with a loose forepaw, his tail flicking idly behind him. He needed to stop! Stop thinking about her!

But it was so damn hard.

A cough, in the distance, was enough to pull him away from his sorrows. His head snapped around, his expression still dark, as he tried to locate where the sound had originated from. So he wasn’t alone after all…

She tossed her head from side to side, in a vain attempt to clear the stench of the smoke out of her nose. It was no good. As long as she stuck around here, then she would continue to suffer like this. And, she wasn't too keen on waiting it out to see how long it was before the smoke dissipated. Her only other option would be if she got incredibly lucky and found a very deep underground den, where the smoke couldn't penetrate.

Dark ears flattened in misery and irritation, she leapt down from the stone carved platform. The hell with this. She was getting out of here. But...the idea of clearing her parched throat did sound nice. That should help considerably. Quite unaware that there was a visitor to the glade, the dark teenager headed the exact way she had came. Which, just so happened to be in his direction. She carried her head low, silver eyes glaring at the earth. Only when she saw movement, a flash of a paw, did she stop and lift her head. Another wolf. Her ears pricked, but she said nothing, expression neutral. She carried on at her steady pace, not in a direct line towards him, but parallel. As strangers, they deserved each others space, but er body language gave him the choice to engage further if he chose to do so.

His nose twitched, but this time not from the distant smell of smoke. The stranger was drawing closer, causing his movement to cease as he glanced around nervously, his ears swivelling to locate the sound of movement. He had gotten so accustom to having a partner in crime he did not know how to act on his own. His posture grew tense as his toes curled into the soft ground. Did he confront the stranger? Did he flee? Try and convince it that making a home out of the Shallows was in its best interest?

When did he become such a dweeb? Hawthorne would have taunted him if she was here.

But she wasn’t.

And Sachiel needed to get over it.

He cleared his throat awkwardly as the ebony loner came into view. His brows immediately snapped together as he observed her from a distance, the tip of his tail twitching nervously. He could hardly recognize himself. He was supposed to bold and daring but now he was nothing but a dull, grey blob. He barely registered the changing colours around him and the stark black figure amongst the autumn foliage. Everything was muted and dull. Just like him.

Can I help you? He asked lamely, his tail slack between his legs as his ears drooped to the side.

As seconds ticked by, Tzila took in the other wolfs body language. His posture was almost slouched, tail limp and ears drooping. The cogs in her head began to spin. Was he having a miserable time of it too? He was distinguished, with bright contrasting eyes and a pleasing agouti coloration. Her dark paws slowly brought her to a halt, a few body lengths away from the young man. "Not if you know how to get rid of this god awful smoke."

Her silver eyes set in the direction from which the source of the smoke was coming from, a deep frown pulling at her lips. Her tail gave an agitated flick. "Was enjoying myself, till I caught wind of it." She glanced back at him. Tzila wasn't the type to ask questions that weren't any of her business. She would let others come out with what was eating them on their own. Half of the time, she didn't even want to hear others problems, believing she had enough of her own. "Thought a drink would help the irritation in my throat..." She shrugged.

The corners of his mouth twitched at her response but he did not smile. He shrugged softly in response, his chin tipping softly to one side as he studied the obsidian stranger. Head north? He suggested lamely as he flicked his nose in the direction he had come from. The smoke had not been noticeable in the Edge—only when he had ventured south did he notice the haze in the sky. She added that she had been in pursuit of a drink to soothe the irritation in her throat caused by the appearance of smoke. He frowned. You should definitely head north then, he added, a nod confirming his words. It would not be wise for her to head further east or south. It clearly was not working out for her thus far. Sachiel was not inviting her to accompany him but heading in the direction opposite the haze would be ideal. Unless she wanted to suffocate herself. He wasn’t going to stop her. She was just a stranger.
