The nights were starting to get really cold, soon the frosts would come, followed by snow and ice, covering up the lake and turning the mountain into a frozen desert. Leo wasn’t at all excited about his second winter, remembering the hardships of last year’s all too well.

Too caught up in his worries to sleep, the Vuesain yearling had elected to keep night watch, sitting himself not far from the den, tail curled tightly over his paws as a small shield against the cold. Two-colored eyes turned to the sky, where a thin layer of mist was obscuring the waning moon.

The young wolf felt a tightness in his chest, looking up at the heavens like that, all his worries pressing down like heavy weights on his shoulders. His muzzle trembled, ears flattening back against his skull as he whispered desperately into the void: “I’m not sure I can do this Da, I’m not as strong as you…”

That’s when he saw it, just for a second. A shadow passing in front of the moon, but it wasn’t a cloud, it was a figure; It can’t be…!

Galen Vuesain
I have loved the stars too fondly

Sleep had become a star-crossed lover for Galen, it would seem, as the young shadow found himself prowling about the inner workings of Sanguine Cove. Whatever pleasant dreams were currently being had by his slumbering pack-mates and siblings eluded the swarthy boy. Not that he entirely minded, though, for the hustle and bustle of the daytime was when heavy lids finally found solace in the abandoned depths of his family's den.

Citrine-tinted eyes were illuminated beneath what faint light the waning moon above cast while paws mastered in the art of silence fell softly. The shadow was beginning to notice subtle changes around him during his nocturnal escapades such as drops in temperature that made the fur along his spine give an occasional shiver if a blowing breeze stroked it just right. Sometimes he could see the faintest of clouds form right in front of his own face before disappearing as quickly as it was formed!

Galen continued his aimless meandering about after leveling his head, allowing his anxious paws to lead him amongst the scattered dens. In doing so his sense of smell picked up a familiar scent that piqued the ebony child's interest, immediately causing the random path his paws were on to immediately shift in a new direction to head toward the source. A subtle chuff was made to announce his presence once the silhouette of Leo came into view, not wanting to awaken the other wolves still asleep. Why wasn't his older brother asleep like the others and why did he look like he just saw a ghost?

It was a wolf, he was sure of it, and yet that couldn’t possibly be true. Wolves didn’t fly about in the sky like that; Not living ones anyway… Leo felt a shiver run down his spine and a sudden sting behind his eyes. He didn’t know much about death, or what happened to wolves when they passed away – just that they weren’t here anymore. But where did they go? He’d heard adults talk about ‘a better place’, heaven, but what that really meant, he wasn’t so sure. It didn’t seem likely that they were actually up in the sky somewhere, and yet…

Lost in those thoughts, he was completely oblivious to the approaching company until the soft greeting made him jump nearly a foot in the air. He’d been sure everyone else was asleep, while he was sitting watch in noble solitude. But no, here was Galen, strolling right out of the shadows all nonchalant, giving his older brother a mini heart attack.

His heart beating at double speed, Leo had to take a moment to get his nerves back under control before he trusted himself to speak; “Gale, what are you doing up so late?” He gave the boy a pale smile, tip of his tail tapping lightly against the ground – surprise on his face, but no judgement, he would enjoy some company.
