Backdated to 1/18. All welcome for the residents of Fisher's Split~ @Loach @Llinnea @Lantana

They had arrived, evident by the presence of the scents of strangers and the sound of the river running out of sight. Conversation drifted away and Clouse moved a little quicker now, happy to see Loach's makeshift home and his friends. The water stretched further across than he anticipated, its current healthy and alive with activity. Rodents darted amongst its shores and those birds which did not journey with the weather gave life to the trees and air. He could only imagine what it would be like in the springtime.

What he didn't immediately see were the members of Loach's not-family, but as happy as Clouse was to meet them he wouldn't go about hunting them down himself. He looked to his companion, and waited for the other man's lead.

Loach

It seemed natural to Loach, the longer they walked. The way their conversation naturally petered off...

He held little doubt that Clouse wouldn't settle in well. Llinnea might appreciate somebody she could use her language with. Lana might just be glad to see another adult hanging around the growing camp. It certainly boasted the numbers of a growing gang so far. Something that gave him a bit of...pause.

Ah, well.

He let out a low warm note to the others that he had returned. With a new face too! He figured that would ready up their interest in coming out from wherever they were.

The tail ends of a meal sat between pale paws - quite literally, as all that remained of the fish was its tail and a stripped, bloody spine. She was just debating whether or not to start gnawing it when she heard Loach's call. Her ears pricked at the sound of his voice. She'd grown comfortable with him much faster than Lana, but the woman was growing on her. Even so, Llinnea was happier to see Loach. Fish tail abandoned, the pup trotted out to meet him.

Her greeting died on her lips when she saw he was with yet another stranger. She pulled up short, a jolt of panic going through her. He wasn't quite as dark as him, but the resemblance was just close enough. She quickly realized it wasn't him, though, and she just eyed him warily. "Hvem er du?" (Who are you?) she asked, forgetting for a moment to speak English. And where was Lana?

She caught the scent of an unfamiliar wolf before she saw them, having to make her way a short way back up the riverbanks from where she'd been fishing. Lana was still drenched with water half way up with her flanks with little to show for the effort, though at least she was getting better at picking out fishing spots. But Loach had been away. She returned on hastened paws if only to make sure Llinnea was alright. If I'm gonna stay here I'll look out for them, she reasoned. Still her stomach turned in a nervous twist knowing she was likely alone to face off whoever this might be. If it was that loner she'd run into before, she might have to get into a proper scrap this time. But, the scent was not hers.

When she turned the bend and saw Loach there, the surge of relief still took her aback a bit. He and the newcomer, a dark stranger were arriving together it would seem, and she swept her tail back to a neutral angle while glancing from the one familiar face to another. The girl's words were lost on the woman, but she could read her body language well enough. Stepping close enough that Llinnea could seek safety at her side if needed, but not so close as she'd seen her stand with her preferred guardian, she offered her a glance of reassurance. There were still boundaries there.

Looking back at the men, the tricolor woman offered a friendly smile and polite nod. Internally, she wondered. Who was this, another guest like herself? She wasn't sure that would leave her standing, but it might make their chances of making it through the winter here without being pushed from the claim better. Was she getting ahead of herself?

Swallowing her uncertain thoughts, she called out a cordial greeting. "Found a friend, have you?" she asked, wondering if this connection was new or old.

His patience was rewarded in time, the little one that emerged from the wood further along the shore clearly happy to summoned until she spotted him. Something that looked to Clouse like fear crossed over her features, causing him to frown and his brows to knit gently. Didn't trust strangers, huh? Poor girl... he hadn't asked about any of their backgrounds, and still wouldn't, but his curiosity already was mounting rather than be pacified.

The question she spoke changed his mood, recognizable to the well-traveled wolf. Bokmål. His tail wagged and his smile had returned, excited that the foreign tongue she used was one that he needed practice with. Before he could answer though, another face had made its appearance, the woman as Loach had referred to her. Miss Lana. She was thrown a toothy grin in silent greeting before responding to Llinnea's query.

"Jeg er Clouse, and you must be Llinnea and Lana."
(I am Clouse,...)

Mother and daughter, maybe? He hadn't thought to ask, content to let Loach reveal information at his own pace.

"It's great to meet you both. I've been invited to hang around with ya guys, if that's alright."

Loach

Llinnea reacted nearly as expected and he wondered if one day she'd get tired of new faces, even if it raised the odds for survival for her. For all of them.

Lana, of course, came in with her formal questioning that teetered on playful flair. He offered her a toothy grin for it, allowed Clouse to speak before he dared to flex what little diplomacy he had. Although much to his surprise, it seemed that Clouse had the odd words of Llinnea covered already. Well I'll be damned...

A warm hum in the back of his throat.

Good company needs good company, right? His gaze flashed warm over the little group. A little huff of laughter followed soon enough, tail swayed.

Her heart was still pounding from her jolt of terror when Lana arrived, standing just close enough to be comforting. Llinnea wanted to shrink into her shadow, or better yet behind Loach - but he was too close to this new face. And then the man spoke, spoke words that were familiar to her. He said them wrong, but in the same way she spoke English words wrong. He had his own accent.

Once upon a time she would have been excited to meet someone new that spoke her language. She would have bounced around and peppered him with excited questions without giving him time to answer properly. Now, however, her ears pressed back as she was further reminded of him. This 'Clouse' had a different voice and didn't speak her language as well as he had; it was not him. But the last time someone spoke her words, the words of her mor, disaster had struck.

She would not make the same mistakes, and she was tired of being afraid.

The gangly pup, small for her age, curled her tail over her back and lifted her lips just enough to flash her teeth. "Hvem er du?" (Who are you?) she repeated. "Hvis han sendte deg, kan du fortelle ham denne gangen at jeg er klar og at han kommer til å betale for det han gjorde." (If he sent you, you can tell him this time that I'm ready and that he's gonna pay for what he did.)

She would not be afraid of him any longer!

Things changed swiftly, as if a cloud had slid over the sun. Lantana saw Llinnea's ears fall back and her teeth flash. Lana took a tactful step forward, twitching her tail and wondering if she would need to step between them. The words falling from the girl's lips were lost on her. but the tone and posture were not. Lana's gaze flashed from the girl to Loach.

Had he had any inkling this might happen? Certainly he hadn't known Lana too well when he brought her back, and Llinnea was a bit cool toward her. This was something else, and after this they all probably ought to have a talk about it.

She still hoped they could calm the situation here, make sense of it. "Are you good company?" A question for this Clouse. She chose to borrow the Loach's good humored words, but the question was direct enough. Did he mean to bring trouble into their little camp?

She glanced back to the girl. "You're safe here," she reminded her, not knowing what else to offer and hoping it wasn't a lie.

Clouse had never had another wolf react so poorly to his attempting to speak their tongue before. Surprise seemed to show first as Loach chirped in, but it wasn't seconds after that the anger took hold and made itself quite evident to each of them. His own eyes widened and his dark ears leaned back, innocently oblivious to what the harm was. The rapid, fluent speech of a language he was far from an expert in certainly didn't help to clear things up. His mouth opened as he tried to find words, mind practically performing acrobatics to try and solve a puzzle for which he had next to no pieces.

'Are you good company?' Miss Lana seemed to challenge, and he couldn't help but feel a burn to his wolfish cheeks. Fuck, maybe he wasn't.

"Uh," his silver gaze glanced to Loach briefly, then to the child he'd upset.

"I'm sorry, do you speak English as well? I didn't mean any harm, but I uh, jeg er bare en nybegynner. I didn't... I didn't catch all of that."
(, I'm just a beginner. ...)

Or maybe he had, and knew so little of what she was alluding to that he was just assuming he was missing meaning from the words. She'd definitely been referencing another wolf but, who could she possibly think he knew? Who would owe a girl not even a year old? Whatever the situation, Lantana was right. At least, Clouse certainly wasn't about to try and harm the child.

Loach
S for swears

Let the record state that Loach did not do emotions. At least, not to this extent.

Llinnea seemed to burst with a suddenly very negative reaction and Lana seemed to turn sour, or passive aggressive, or something. Which left Loach to fumble the ball in front of his company as he tried to piece it all together. For what the fuck could make everybody flip so quick?

Llinnea, He started off with firmly. A glare that mingled with concern and hurt was sent out from his face to hers. We don't be treatin' guests like that. Suddenly he felt like a father! And hated in even more in the way he had to be an uncool father! Clouse is good. I don't ever bring bad back here, y'hear? This said for the whole group in general. Nobody ain't ever bring bad back here. We're all good. Even with rough edges and bumps in the road. He trusted this little band more than he trusted anything else waiting for them out there.
