@Ruenna <3

She noted the reaction of the girl, eyes curious though that caution still remained. Demons were a fickle thing… and she hated it when they were alfresco for others in the nearby area to hear about. She didn’t mind sharing… but when they already knew? When they knew more than her? It was only natural for her to think the worst when it came to just who she was. Her eyes were wide, attentive as she held a defensive posture. Certain amounts of pain lingered deep in her eyes, memories almost flashing like a picture book, remembering the site… the attacks… the blood. She blinked a few times to brush the memories away, shaking the visible trouble out of her eyes with a couple shakes of her head.

Throak. The name did not sound familiar, but the date made her calm down significantly and the reasoning… the explanation and the fact that he’d left the Brook… it made her calm down significantly, her heart beating out of her chest almost as she waited, tension in her features, as she waited for that final news. Was it a last hope almost? She drew a deep breath and held it… and then Rue spoke again.

They… they lost? She’d almost expected it, because she knew how outnumbered they’d been… but part of her still thought, hoped… maybe some of them made it out… maybe… maybe some of them are still alive. She couldn’t give up hope just yet, her paws digging into the dirt as she looked down towards the ground, distress threatening her features, a slight tremor to her body as her jaw tightened, gritting teeth against teeth as she put everything into calming herself down, two more questions lingering as she looked up at her. “Did any… did any of them make it out…? Is Feorb Brook after me?” She needed to know… she just… she needed to know. She shouldn't have left... she shouldn't have left and then maybe she could have helped, made a difference.

She knew her presence would never make a difference... but what if it had?

That @Lilya didn't interrupt or cry out or otherwise protest what she was hearing was... a good thing, Rue guessed, though perhaps she was just taking the news with a well-trained calm. The girl's openly defensive stance was impossible to miss, not that Rue was doing anything than flinching away and, frankly, wishing she were anywhere else. Rue absently tested the dryness of her mouth, feeling suddenly thirsty in her discomfort, as she watched Lilya process what she was hearing.

More questions. That meant she believed Rue though, right? The Tainn's brows came together in awkward sympathy as she slowly shook her head, a suitable answer to both questions. A 'no' to one was happier than a 'no' to the other, though, so she took a careful breath and tried to explain all she knew in the most sensitive way possible, but she wasn't normally all that good at wording things properly and knew she could probably be a lot more gentle. "He said it was over, had been for a while, they, they considered it won and done. They probably think you're dead or... or don't care. There... Lilya, there was nobody left. I don't know much else, I just... he said the Brook had moved onto other problems, he didn't say anything about you. I'd remember."

She was holding it together for the most part, knowing that it was the probably end result… it didn’t make it that much easier… even with the good news that was delivered afterward, the news that should have made her happy… she remained tense, blinking back emotions from her eyes as she quickly looked towards the ground, not saying anything as she focused on keeping her features somewhat calm, taking a few steps back. The pain eventually slipped into her eyes as she looked at Ruenna. “I… ah-I’ve got to go.” Her words were rushed, almost panicked and definitely pained before she turned quick on her heels and took off in a random direction.

She couldn’t deal with it… she refused to. The demons she’d worried about for so long thought her dead or didn’t care if she was alive… but she’d lost her entire family and she’d run, leaving them with less of a fighting chance. She might not have liked fighting, but she’d been trained to do so for a reason, and she should have stood by them. She didn’t know what to think or how to feel, so she ran, fighting and biting back everything she thought she might be feeling in favor of just feeling the wind in her fur and blinking it all away, even if it was just for a little while.

Good job, Rue, the girl thought bitterly to herself, watching as Lilya shakily processed what she was hearing. Well, that's your good deed of the day fulfilled, I hope you're pleased with yourself. Feeling incredibly awkward, the young Tainn said nothing more, just waited for some cue on what to do next, regretting this encounter entirely. Her intentions had only been to try and make Lilya feel better, a little safer, but of course she would be hit hard by the news that her family were dead - how stupid and insensitive could Rue get? That was one rabbit hole she didn't want to jump down...

To nobody's surprise, Lilya peaced out. Rue opened her mouth to - to what, protest? Apologise? Say something else to make it worse? In the end, she made no sound at all, and just watched the girl's retreating shape as she fled the news. Man, it felt crappy to have someone run away from you that way... she wasn't used to making people feel like that at all. It was, like, the opposite of what normally happened.

"Glad to help," she called half-heartedly, deliberately not loud enough to carry over the ever-increasing distance between herself and Lilya. Her chin jutted out in displeasure, her ears held out to the side in awkwardness. "Anytime," she muttered, spitting out a 'tch!' to scold herself before turning and trotting off. What a great start to the day.
