His sister seemed more and more intent on making her escape past that bright wall and into wherever it was that mother went when she left them to sleep, but the boy wasn't so sure he wanted her to go out there first. Sharp blue eyes watched the way her chest rose and fell in steady rhythm, indicating that she must be sound asleep. Now was the perfect opportunity to go out there and make sure it was safe for her.

Pudgy legs gathered beneath the boy as he pushed up the steep slope and towards the light, a tightness in his chest and butterflies in his belly as he drew closer, Now how did mother do it? Head low, shoulders hunched and through.

The brightness was overwhelming, a large looming shape close enough to make the boy squeak with concern as he back-pedalled into the safety of the world he knew. A bold attempt at a growl (more a purr) thrown at the big wolf, warning them to stay away. So hasty was his retreat that he tumbled right over the top of @Kara and found himself seated at her back. A concerned whine was sent forth, both worried for any injury he might have caused her and fear of the thing outside.

Charged with keeping a watchful eye on the little ones while @Craw and @Morganna enjoyed a break and time alone, Wraith lay comfortably at the den's entrance. As the pups had been slumbering when last he checked on them, the brute busied himself with grooming his fur. Had Wraith not grown with the responsibility of looking after pups, he likely would have felt guilt for lounging around as others worked around him. But the male knew the importance of his duty and intended to follow through with it in spades.

Dark ears flicked back as he caught the tell-tale pattering of curious paws. Wraith turned just as @Odin squeaked and skittered back into the confines of the den. Amused, the large brute laughed, his deep voice echoing off the walls. "See me now, can you, young one?" The half-hearted attempt at a growl was heartwarming to Wraith, reminding him of his own siblings as pups. The northerner stood and gave a long, languid stretch before approaching and flopping down nearby, large body blocking the exit.

"Your mother will be back soon. Use your nose," Wraith advised. "Go on, give a sniff," he encouraged gently. "I'm not as scary as I look." After all, it wasn't the first time Wraith had been entrusted to their care.

The booming laugh made the chunky child cringe, hiding behind his sisters flank until he realised just what he was doing. A warning squeak was sent forward then, Come any closer and I'll bite off your face! as he stepped back over his poor sibling to stand splay legged to protect her from the monster.

The more it spoke the bolder the dark boy grew, moving forward on steady feet, neck outstretched and dark nose wiggling. It looked a bit like mother, and smelled a bit like mother but it sounded nothing like her. A rather cross expression was thrown at the large blurry dark as the child growled a warning again, Don't move, another stiff step taken forward, and another.

The child reached out close enough for the fur on @Wraith's underside to brush his nose. A more forceful prod was given then as he searched for where the food comes from, only meeting hard muscles and bone where his mother was soft and full. The next noise he made was clearly intended as an accusation. Who was this sham that sat where his mother should be? And why was there no food? He could feel it already, he was fading away - little more than a shadow. Oh but he was too young to die from starvation. Mournfully the child lamented for a life not yet lived, too consumed by the absence of his mother, (and his sister who surely too would starve!) to notice the dirt beneath his paws had given way to grass and over his head the world was open -  so very unlike the cramped little hole he had been living in.

The boy's growls were nothing short of adorable. Well aware of how readily his size could intimidate, the male remained still and calm to allow the pup the confidence to come closer. Patiently, Wraith waited as the boy grew bold enough to investigate. Lips curled with amusement as the boy thought to find a meal from him. In another week, perhaps he could expect to find such a thing from the brute, but not there. "Only your mother is good for food there," Wraith advised. "She'll be back soon. But for now, why don't you take a look around?"

Wraith's large head swept out, inviting the pup to explore the immediate area within sight. Quickly, his eyes scanned the sky. He knew of the dangers that came from above for pups in the form of hawks and eagles. He would not be caught unawares when it came to protecting these little ones. Spotting nothing, he felt comfortable in shifting to the side to allow the pup out. Of course, it meant @Odin would have to flop over his large paws if he was curious enough. If not, Wraith was perfectly content with sheltering the little one for longer.

The big not mother moved and the boy trundled forward to fill the space it had left, blinking rather rapidly as it suddenly became clear he was outside. Small blue eyes squinted against the glare of the unfamiliar sun looking altogether displeased with this latest development. As he moved to scramble over the legs splayed before him, he spied the 'floof wiggle' attached to this large wolf, much like it was to his mother and while he was not waving it around in a way to entice the child to play with it, the way the wind teased the hairs was still terribly inviting to one so small.

Clearly captivated it should not have come as a surprise when the boy gathered his strength to scramble over the final limb, teeth closing on plush fur and paws wrapping possessively around the appendage. Any attempt at movement would be met with another possessive growl. With his sister still soundly asleep underground he didn't have to share and Wraith's dark tail seemed so much more interesting than his mothers, out here in the sun where the light could catch the fine detail of each individual hair. No, this floof wiggle was his now, and he wasn't going to share it with @Kara.

Watching the eyes had always been Wraith's favorite part of helping to raise pups. As with his siblings in the Far North, the brute could see @Odin puzzling out all that he saw. The novelty of all around the young mind never failed to fascinate and for all that he had seen in his life, Wraith hoped to maintain even half of that wonder of the world around him as he aged.

On the spring breeze was the promise of the fast approaching summer. It ruffled his thick fur, making him ever glad for the monadnock's available sheltering shade and the nearly constant wind. While Wraith took notice of the wind upon his face, the boy discovered it in a wholly unique way by the way it ruffled the fur along his tail.

The black man's laugh was rich and hearty as Odin grabbed hold with needle teeth and he felt a grand amount of sympathy for Morganna when feeding the little buggers now. Thinking on that now, it was just about time for the pups to start eating more solid food, was it not? Wraith made a mental note to go on a hunt after Morganna returned unless their doting mother already had that in mind.

"Have yourself a new toy, do you pup?" Wraith teased, amused by Odin's antics. He wasn't much different from himself as a youngling, now that he thought about it. Unable to help himself, the male shifted to reach over and lick the boy along his back with adoration.

The voice took the boy by surprise, with a jolt, small rounded ears turned his face to look upon @Wraith's with curiosity and wonder (although he failed to release the floof-wiggle, it was his now!) Wonder quickly melted to a more challenging glance, followed by a growl. No, the big couldn't have it! His growl was cut short when the tongue passed up his back, jaws agape with a squeak, Odin released the tail as he rolled onto his back, all pudgy belly and tiny wiggling legs protesting the sudden ticklish sensation. He made his displeasure known with small grunts and snorts as he tried to regain his footing, accusatory glare thrown at the big. What did he think this was?! Only ma does that!

Paws slapped the ground as the boy bowed down, tail waving high over his back as he unleashed a sharp bark, making his displeasure clearly known. Each step forward was followed by two back, interspaced with barks as he looked this way and that, waiting for the next attack! He wouldn't be caught unawares again! Ooo! the little pup growled. I'll get you yet!

One last defiant charge was made, head tucked low and eye squeezed shut. Who did he think he was dealing with?!

Amusement had his lips curling up as @Odin made to challenge him. What a cocky little pup for one who had been so uncertain only moments before. Watching the pair of them grow into themselves was such a gift and not one Wraith would take lightly. Leaning back on the elbow farthest from Odin, Wraith lifted his closest forepaw and left it hovering in the air over the pup's head in playful warning before finally resting his heavy paw gently on top of the boy's head.

"Careful there, Odin. Gotta pick your battles carefully," he warned with a smile. While he was fine with the exploration of his power, Wraith knew he had to at least warn the boy that he wouldn't always get his way. "Calm down, little one. You're fine," he laughed. "You'll wake your sister." Speaking of the little rouge-furred girl, he peeked over to see her still out like a light. Part of him worried; was she sick? Was she usually not as active as Odin? But watching her regular breathing and not hearing any congestion or otherwise abnormalities set his worries to ease. At least the pair were easy to keep in the den. For now. Wraith knew soon enough he'd be chasing them all over the place trying to keep track. Thankfully, Morganna had only had two pups. A larger litter would have been more than a challenge for the new teacher.

His charge was halted by a solid weight on his head, the lad still trying to push forward, moving his head this way and that looking for a weak point that never existed. His struggling finally wore the boy down as he plopped onto his bottom, head canting at the strange words spoken. In time he would come to learn them, but for now, all he could do was puzzle over the sound and try not to flinch at the seemingly sudden laugh that followed it. Well, that was supposed to be a good sound, wasn't it? So the needle-toothed toddler smiled in response.

Sister was one word he did have a grasp on, and at the mention of Kára he began to flounce back to the den, an echoing bark thrown into the darkness where she slept. There was an audible grumble in response, the sound of a shifting body as the red child rolled over, clearly too pooped from whatever prior adventures she had undertaken to be roused by her brothers insistent demands. Well she wasn't much fun at all was she?

Dissapointed he turned back to the big dark, looking at the larger wolf expectantly. Now what were they gonna do?
