After spending most of the morning saving up his energy and digesting a small mouse he had snatched from a nearby hole, Fenru Tainn was bored. Bored, bored, bored… He sat up and scratched at one of his oversized ears. He took a deep breath then slowly stretched – arching his back upward at first to unfold his hind legs then bowing down low to reach out to the space in front of him with his forepaws. Scanning the immediate forest around him, he stood up and shook out his coat; when he didn’t hear or see anyone nearby, he took off to the left, and strolled through the thick hedges.
He sniffed, wondering to himself what he would do with his time before he and his siblings were called back to the den to sleep. He wanted to play but there was no one to play with. He wanted to talk and learn something new but there was no one to talk to or learn from. He gazed up at the gray, overcast sky. Even the sun didn’t want to come out and play it seemed.
Finding the small rodent had happened through luck alone; he had been fortunate enough to be just a split-second faster than his prey. Hunting much larger quarries, he figured, was a whole different story. Just how different it was, however, was something Fen had yet to fully realize.
With his nose trailing along the ground, he started tracking the faint scent of a groundhog. It had curiously scampered about the area, leading the young pup in a full circle before he found his muzzle halfway into a small tunnel. Fenru jumped, thrilled by his discovery. His tail swayed wildly at his back and he let out a sharp bark. He craned his neck down to see if the burrow’s inhabitant would address him. When it didn’t, he plunked down and frowned. “Come out, come out!” he then taunted at the top of his lungs…. as if it would actually draw the groundhog from its dwelling.
