Golden tendrils of light glistened through the cracks in forest’s snow laden canopy, but the warmth of the sun never reached the ground below which was carpeted in a thick layer of pristine snow and ice. All warmth was stolen, swept up by the icy winds which snaked through the tall pillars of the trees, leaving the young male which traipsed curiously through the natural labyrinth with an unwelcome chill down his spine.

The male wandered aimlessly through the unfamiliar terrain, taking his time to cautiously sniff at every scent that passed in the breeze. Occasionally he would approach the twisted roots of a tree and paw at the ground by it, hoping to uncover a sleeping mammal or a medicinal plant that could have been somewhat shielded from the cold weather. However, the subordinates foraging was so far unfruitful.

A few more hours slipped by and the agouti male had wandered further into the forest, and after deciding to follow the flow of tiny stream for some distance on a whim, he had somehow become completely and utterly lost. Dark fur along his back bristled in unease as he began to glance around in all direction, trying to figure out which way to go. It was then that he spotted the narrow entrance to a cave nearby, and reluctantly he approached it.

The scent of blood lingered in the darkness as he neared its entrance, and the sound of water dripping from the ceiling of the cave was slightly eerie. For a moment his paw hung there, as he debated entering the pitch-black abyss, but spurred on by a ray of golden sunlight which brightened the cave for a second or two, Lorcan finally placed his paw down and tentatively tip-toed in. Maybe he'd find an injured animal inside that he could scavenge?

Russet ears fell flat against his head as he moved forwards slowly, one paw at a time, struggling to see through the darkness. “H-hello?” He whispered, hoping not to hear a response or be greeted with the figure of a large grizzly bear.

NOVA
a dawn in me a dawn in you

Near the back of the cave she had set up an altar of sorts. Three raven feathers, the sun-bleached skull of a doe, an elk femur with a scant amount of meat and gristle still attached, and two of the most presentable apples she could find. She carefully laid down the newest addition, a snowshoe hare mottled brown and white, having not yet fully completed its shift to winter pelage. The poor thing had stuck out like a sore thumb against the white mounds of snow that now covered the ground, but it was lucky for Nova who had caught it without much trouble. Quite lucky, considering she, too, stuck out like a sore thumb in the stark light of day.

And luckier still was this cave she had found no more than a fortnight ago, before the snows had really set in. She did not plan to stay for long, but it was a warm place to sleep and she had already accumulated a few things here. The goddess would provide, as long as she listened for her signs.

Nova carefully tore into the hare, opening the hide as if to eat but then backing away without taking a single bite. The modest feast was not for her. A small, hesitant whisper slipped in from the entrance of the den. She turned, head lifted and nose twitching as she peered towards the sunlit entrance. A visitor? It wasn't a voice she knew, or a scent she recognized. But on this hallowed night that meant little, and she knew to expect the unexpected. Lightly she tread back through the passageway. "Hello?" She called back. "Who goes there?"

As he peered through the curtain of darkness, he could feel his heart begin to flutter in his chest and his breathing quicken, sending small gossamer tendrils out from between his parted charcoal lips. Russet ears perked up immediately at the sound of approaching footfall and he suddenly stopped in his tracks, placing all four paws firmly on the smooth ground as he shifting his lean figure lower into a defensive stance. He was ready to run depending on what figure greeted him from the darkness.

A response echoed back against the cave walls, causing his ears to momentarily flicker in all directions as he struggled to pinpoint its position. Craning his neck forwards to peer onwards through the caves, Lorcan strained to see who was approaching until finally a single ray of sunlight caught the glistening yellow of the female’s eyes piercing through the gloom. “Um.. I’m Lorcan..” He called back with a shaky voice, before he took a deep breath and plucked up the courage to begin creeping forwards blindly through the dark.

The scent of blood grew stronger as he tiptoed his way through the cave, using the wall on the right as a guide as his eyes slowly began to adjust. Blinking softly as he approached the shadowy figures’ pair of glowing eyes, he could just about make the flash of some white fur on the ground and the pale shape of a skull and a large bone. Presuming that she must’ve simply been a loner living in the cave, Lorcan immediately felt the need to apologise for his presence. “I’m sorry for intruding on you… I can leave if you want?” He stopped then, pausing mid-step and waited a few metres away from her with his head tilted to the side and tail swaying respectfully low behind him.

NOVA
a dawn in me a dawn in you

Nova's eyes settled on the stranger, finding a male of earthy tones. "Lorcan..." She hummed softly. "No, please, come in." She assured him, her chin lifted slightly in invitation and inky tail swaying behind her. "My name is Nova." She introduced herself.

"It's nice to have company," She added, in case he thought she was just trying to be polite. Nova turned, walking further back into the cave and stopping before the shrine. She rounded in a circle before settling her haunches on the ground. She looked into the male's eyes, golden and bright even in the dim light. She stared for a moment, through him, into him, before seemingly making up her mind. He appeared an innocent sort, not the type to go marauding through occupied caves in search of spoils. She could see a good heart inside. "There's a reason you came here, yes?" She asked, though it was more an assumption than a true question.

"A reason that you might not know, but something drew you to this place?" She tested, giving leading questions that would guide him to the right path. That something, she knew, was the goddess at work. He hadn't simply stumbled in here, but some turn of events that would seem otherwise serendipitous to anyone else, she knew was the Crone's guiding paw. And Nova too, was an extension of her will.

Russet ears perked up in recognition as the woman repeated his name and a shy smile graced his youthful features as the swarthy stranger welcome him in closer. Golden eyes still adjusting to the dark gloom of the cave, Lorcan blinked softly and gave a nod of understanding, before he tentatively stepped forwards. Her next sentence hinted at a lack of company, which helped to further settle any anxiousness he may have felt about entering the cave – preferring to steer clear of any chance of confrontation. “How long have you stayed here?” The innocent question slipped from his thoughts and echoed softly against the cave walls.

Hot aching paws moved forwards carefully, feeling their way along the cold surface of the stone as he blindly followed her scent through the tunnel of the cave.  As he moved, his eyes slowly began to adjust to the inky blackness of his surroundings, and gradually, he began to make out the woman’s swarthy figure in the darkness. Observing silently as she circled back around, the scent of blood wafted to his nose once again which cause the agouti male’s attention to wonder for a brief moment before his golden eyes flickered back to catch the stark yellow stare of the stranger. Their eyes remained locked for a heartbeat or two, before Lorcan grew uncomfortable and blinked, darting his gaze away.

When the swarthy woman questioned his intentions, Lorcan shifted awkwardly on his paws as his eyes flickered back to meet hers. “Uh-umm—” He nervously struggled for an answer before she swiftly cut him off to prompt him again. “I was out searching…for supplies. I-I got lost somewhere a while back.” He hesitantly responded, unsure if his answer was what she was hinting at. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand..” He finally admitted, brows furrowing in confusion at the mysterious woman.
