Aponi Donata
for @Lila same day as the challenge, after she speaks with Kyna, before she talks to Serach

The conversation with Kyna had only fueled the panic that had began when she had started looking for her daughters. However, unlike Spieden the panic didn't show through the cool exterior as she moved through the territory. Aponi's pace was quick but even and her face held back any emotion despite the way her blue eyes swept back and forth. There was no sound coming from her maw, no desperate calling or howling, no signs of cracks or duress that might call her new crown into question.

The fog seemed to grow even thicker as the afternoon fell into evening, the setting sun casting an odd orange and purple glow through the murk. Finally though the sight of her dark coated daughter came into view, from the looks of it practicing one of the snow games that Kyna had taught her. The sight of her sliding across the frosted surface and the laughter in the air made the woman's heart hurt and yet set her determination all the same. The Bend would not fail, it would be rebuilt to better than it had ever been before. Lila deserved it, Aponi may have failed her oldest daughter but she would not fail another one of her children.

Propelling herself forward from where she had stopped the silver woman draped her muzzle over the girl's neck and pulled her closer. It didn't take much to see that her muzzle was freshly torn though no longer bleeding. Breathing in the scent of her standing there Aponi murmured into her ruff, "Lila have you spoken to any of the others? There's been a change."

Lila was pretty good at entertaining herself. After Kyna had showed her how to do it, she liked to come out here and practice. Swiftly getting the hang of it. She loved sliding across the ice. She did it again and again, not geting enough. Eventually, she didn't care she was alone. She had a hope Kyna or another pup would join her.

It wasn't odd to her in the least when momma had called for the Spieden woman. Things like that happened all the time and they didn't mean much to her. She was far enough away not to hear the rush of other voices when the time came. No, in her world everything was well.

With great speed she again jumped upon the ice, and went farther than she had before. It was easy to laugh in pure delight. Lets see Kyna do that. She smirked.

Then she realized someone was there, and lifted her dark face, lite with surprise to see. But, it was only momma, and she quickly went to tell her what she had just done. Blue-gray eyes fell upon the marks, and her momma pulled her closer. What was going on? A gentle whine collided in her throat. "No, what's wrong?" She wouldn't believe something wasn't, not like this. What kind of change?

Aponi had paused when she had first seen the dark coated girl sliding across the ice, soaking in the sound of her laughter. It was such an innocent act that the mother wanted her to have it for just a couple of moments longer. But Lila couldn't stay innocent forever and the Aquila knew that. Before she could even move forward her daughter was coming to greet her, blue eyes alit with excitement and pride. Watching as it fell away to concern the mother had closed the gap so she could embrace her daughter. The whine that filled the aftermath of Aponi's cynical announcement caused her brow to furrow, pulling away so she could look over Lila's face.

Looking deeply over the child as if she could memorize every part of her the crease in the mother's eyebrows deepened. Lila had always been close with her, closer than Kyna ever had, but would this cause a rift between them too? She could avoid it no longer and in true Aponi fashion she said it like ripping off a bandage, "I challenged Spieden and won, I'm the new leader of Oak Tree Bend. Spieden decided to leave despite me and Serach trying to convince her to stay and a lot of the others went with her." That left only one other thing to say, but it was the part that could make or break her child's opinion of everything: "Kyna left too."

There was a moment of quiet, and when she thought she couldn't bare it any longer her mother finally spoke. There left little to the imagination as she put it plainly. Spieden wasn't the leader, but Momma because she'd challenged her for it. Okay. This didn't seem bad, especially since she recalled Aponi upon the mountain. Standing proud and tall. She'd always pictured her mother a ruler. But, it did sound rather messy on how she had to become one. Those scratches were from Spieden. It was a little hard to take in. This, this would have been enough to try to understand. It wasn't all. The brown and silver lady had left, and that meant Mako and Marina too. Momma didn't say the rest, but she felt like she knew the other pups were gone too with their parents. There was a single word that fluttered in her heart, and mind. Why. The Aquila did not ask. She didn't think she would understand. She would miss them, and yet...Hadn't it always been her and Momma? Sadness rose inside of her, but the anger began.

She squeezed her eyes shut. The worst of it came. Kyna? No, no, no. Why would she? It didn't make sense any of it. There was only one thing she dared to ask about those gone. "Will we see her..them again?" She liked to think it wasn't the end. It wasn't all bad. It would be painful not to have Kyna, but to never see her...

For a second she snuggled closer to Aponi, taking comfort that she was here, and telling her. It would have been terrible to find out any other way.

It would have been impossible to miss the sadness and confusion that clouded the dark blue eyes of her daughter even if Aponi hadn't been staring at her so intensely. As soon as it was noted though it was cleared with a new emotion, a harder one, anger. This was something that the mother could relate to, her own blood boiled at the thought of the betrayals they had been dealt this afternoon. Seeing the way Lila's eyelids squeezed shut as if to block out the news of her sister leaving was met only with another embrace.

Pulling her in and feeling the way that her daughter cuddled back into her as if the pair of them could block everything out was comforting. She had failed @Kyna so early in her life in a way that they never could have repaired but Aponi knew that this time was different. Lila was different, she didn't know a mother who disappointed her or disappeared or broke promises. This however, this was different. This would be the first real blow that the youngest Aquila would have to conquer, the abandonment of her pack mates and friends, of her sister who as far as the mother could tell hadn't even come to say goodbye.

The last thought made Aponi's stomach clench as fury spread through her veins with abandon. She had made many mistakes with her teenage daughter but how could Kyna be so selfish? Lila had never harmed her or mistreated her, she had looked up to her. Still, the mother could not force this upon her daughter, "I hope we will, but I don't know. That's up to them now." Let your children make their own decisions, their own opinions and just hope to god they choose you.

There were no answers were there? Aponi would have told her their reasons to help her understand. Or at least try to. This was what made her hurt, the anger rise a little more, and split out in tears. A small sob fell into the sleek, silver fur.

"She should have told me good bye," she blubbered, in a sharp tone. One she'd only reserved when she wasn't being taken seriously. The heat filled her chest, and washed down her face. She'd experienced sadness and anger in her life. This, it hurt as if an elk had crushed her. She tried to heave in a breath, not wanting to cry. Also wanting to scream in fury. Didn't she deserve one last word? To hear it herself? She would have tried to understand what drew her away. Now, Lila wasn't sure she could hope or she would ever know. She'd never understand what caused her to leave. As Aponi put it, it would be up to them. That was not very promising.

Another silent sob wracked her shoulders, and she hiccuped for a second breath of air. Then with a sniff, she managed to stop any more from forming.  "Who needs them any how." She spat with venom. Straightening herself, she pulled from the safety of her mother's embrace. Watery eyes searching bright blue."You're okay aren't you momma?" She seemed to be taking it all well from her point of view.

The feeling of her daughter's body trembling and racking with sobs only hardened the anger that was already formed within Aponi. This was unacceptable. What was worse was that it was her other daughter who had caused so much pain, and despite the deep fury she felt the mother knew she couldn't hate Kyna. The blonde girl had hardly known better than to run when things got hard, her mother had taught her that lesson. The sharp tone of the pup was justified and confirmed the fear that the Aquila had felt, "She should have, you deserve better than to be treated that way." The tone was firm, while she may have made a lot of mistakes in her life she was sure of this; her daughters deserved the best.

Blue eyes watched the fury well up within her child as she pulled away, composing the tears and spitting out her words. For some inexplicable reason it caused the pride Aponi had always felt for Lila to double. This was the Aquila daughter she had always wanted Kyna to be. Raising her own cranium higher she nodded, "I'm okay as long as you're okay my dear, and Oak Tree Bend will be okay too. We're stronger without deserters than we would be with them." If they weren't going to be loyal to herself and Serach and the Bend as a whole than they would not be welcome there.

Lila tried to find comfort in those words. In their meaning. Justified, even. This wasn't fair to her, and she should have gotten better. She had always thought it was strange Kyna wasn't closer to mother. Whatever had happened between, she had thought Aponi had tried to make things right. What was Kyna's problem? The child would likely never know now. She tried to find some peace in the idea if Kyna thought it best to leave, Lila should thank her for cutting herself out of their lives.

Lila would not forget today nor the feelings she'd been left with. She would remember this hurt. The bite of fury, and sadness. While she never wanted to feel like this again, she seemed to realize she could only control what she did. She planned on letting Kyna go, and leave little kindness for the others.

As Mother straightened in turn, emitting those words a smile coaxed itself out. It meant a lot to the young girl to know her own well being came first. Should she be fine what reason would Aponi have to be miserable? She hadn't doubted for a minute the Bend was in trouble. Lila liked Serach, and knew he would take care of them. Just as Aponi did for her, and now the others. She faintly bumped her nose to the underside of her chin. "Yes, we are,"she agreed, giving a final sniff. It would be so strange now, but least they had each other. She cocked her head to the side. "What can I do to help?" She wondered.

@Lila fade out with your post?

If she could take comfort in anything that happened on this night so far it was that she had still managed to make Lila smile. Despite all of her weakness and failures as a mother she always seemed to be able to make her youngest smile even in the darkest of times. Aponi knew that up until now the Aquila pup had grown up in relative innocence, security in a pack, security in a mother and sister, friends to play with and much of that was gone now. After today a large portion of what had seemed like a guarantee had vanished into thin air, but the mother swore that of it all Lila would always have her mother.

This time there would be no running from the messes that she created.

Aponi smiled feeling a gentle nudging of her chin accompanied with what seemed like a determined sniff, similar to that of a child who fell and scraped their knee and then bravely sniffed and declared she was fine. Running her salmon tongue along the bridge of the dark girl's nose in thanks her smile grew, "We'll need more help at the borders doing patrols, and we'll have to work harder to fill the caches but anything you want to do to help would  go a long way. If there's a role in particular you're interested in I could do my best to teach you." If it was guarding Aponi could teach her to spar, healing she could teach her what limited herb knowledge she had, hunting and tracking or even scouting the mother knew she could teach her what she needed.
