Askan Selwyn
for @Remington :D

Askan couldn't claim that he knew Remington all that well, but she was never difficult to find. From what he could tell, she spent the majority of her time in the field or amongst the pines. And that's where he found her, in the clearing woods near the great oak tree- under which they had dug out their communal den. It was late morning, so everyone had already risen and was going about their day, but from what Askan could tell, Remington seemed distracted. She pawed at the snow , and even though her back was to him so Askan couldn't see, he had an idea of what was troubling her.

"Percy been at the caches again?" He asked with a curious tilt of his head.

He stepped forward to see and lo and behold, the communal dens cache had been sacked and pillaged. Just as he'd expected. He knew that she had a good appetite and he was glad that she was eating well, but did she really have to eat everything like that? It wasn't as if food was plentiful these days. Was it too much trouble for her to remember that everyone else had to eat too? He sighed and shook his head, he'd have to have a word with her later, but for now they had to fix this mess. They couldn't leave the cache in this state, something had to be done.

"Damn kid. Feel like hunting? Do some damage control?"

He hadn't yet to hunt with Remington, so this was as good as a chance as any to see how good she really was. With it being winter, there wasn't a lot on the menu, but even now there was an abundance of rabbits in the pine woods. They just had to find a warren and try and flush out as many as they could.

She needed something to do, or wanderlust would get the better of her. A lot of her time was spent wandering, getting a feel for her new home it wasn't enough. She had to do more. Why she wasn't yet sure how long she would stay here, she wouldn't think well of herself if she didn't try. Just as she had promised.

Everyone had went to do their own business, she started to take count of how much food they had. It was one useful thing her mother had taught her. Keep tabs on caches empty and full. Make sure there wasn't any major changes to water supply.

Lost in thought, Askan's voice surprised her. The only indication was the flattening of her ear. The girl's scent was here, but she made no attempt to answer. She thought the youngest had the most need for it any way. Eyes shifted, trying to decipher if he was displeased. With Askan it was a usual given. Remi tried not to jump to conclusions. Though his words were enough to settle the matter.

Silver ears tipped forward, and she shuffled back, cocking her head in his direction. "I'd feel of better use," she admitted. Even though she thought the young Avalon should too, she wasn't about to suggest it. She wouldn't mind filling this cache. Wasn't like she hadn't emptied one herself. Hunting with Askan solo would be interesting."You probably know best where to start. Or what it is we're hoping to get?" It was so strange out here. There were familiar vermin, everything else was different...new.

That was a good response, if he'd ever heard one. She wanted to help. She felt discontent sitting around doing nothing, unlike a certain wolf that lived within these borders. He seemed more than happy to eat their food and watch the caches empty before his eyes and very rarely was seen doing anything about it. Damn it, he was all talk. Remington seemed to be the opposite though, she would surely stagnate if she remained idle, like Askan she wanted to provide and prove that letting them in had been the right call. Even though, as Askan stood there, he once again decided that offering her an invitation to the pack had been a good idea.

He'd made the right call.

At her question, Askan paused for a moment in thought. There wasn't a lot out and about this time of year and he didn't feel like going too far in the hunt for food. Once again, rabbits hopped into his mind. Surely the two of them would be able to bring a sizeable amount of them back to the cache. And if not, well then they'd have to venture further afield and hunt outside their territory. Askan doubted it would come to that though. Or at least he hoped not. Not in this weather, not with how cold it was.

"Rabbits." He told her, pointing to the pine woods behind them with his snout. "Should be a few about. With luck we can sniff out a warren then maybe flush out a load of them."

He'd done it a few times before with his family, back in Yukon. He remembered hurrying home with his mouth stuffed with so many rabbits he could barely carry them all. It had been a slaughter, but a necessary one. Their food stocks had been running low and prey was scarce, the caribou they usually hunted hadn't yet arrived in the valley, so there was little they could do but wait and eat what they could. The same sort of situation applied to here and now, but it wasn't nearly as dire. For such a new pack, they were doing well with what they had.

What went behind those yellow eyes she made no attempt to guess. After a thoughtful pause it seemed decided. Rabbits "Fine by me, I know a thing or two about them." Silver tail gave a few wags, hopeful they would find a warren. Even she knew their options were pretty minimum this time of year, and they had to stick with the odds. Despite how she might long for a real pack hunt, figure out more about caribou, all in good time.

She let out a brief snuff, clearing dirt from her nostrils. She was going to take this matter seriously...mostly. They began the walk further into their small forest, her black nose set to twitching, and gold eyes roved the ground for something that would seem suitable for a bunny hole. When she was young she had started with mice, and voles. Then her father had let them loose on rabbits. It was there speed, timing, and aim were best learned before deer and elk were pursued.

Remi had an idea in mind. Splitting up with a little wager. "How 'bout we make this interesting. We split up to cover more ground. But, whoever finds a warren gets dibs on the biggest rabbit?" As she spoke she kept her swift trot, only for a second looking to her companion. Waiting to see him if he would take her up on the offer, or be against it.

Askan couldn't help but grin at her suggestion. It was no secret that Askan had a competitive nature. He had grown up as the youngest of the litter and so he had always made a pronounced effort to stand out from his sisters. Whether his attempts bore fruit well... He wasn't too sure to be honest. He certainly stood out in regards to physical appearance and temperament, but could the same be said for their accomplishments? It wasn't something he had ever really thought about before and thinking about it now made his mouth dry. So he quickly tossed those thoughts to the side and focused on the matter at hand.

"I'm in." Askan told her, with no hesitation.

The prize didn't particularly interest him, as a rabbit no matter the size was still just a rabbit, but he was all about the bragging rights. And a little competition never harmed anyone. It was all harmless fun and if it made them be even more productive then it was all the better, wasn't it? This sort of reminded him of the old days, where he and his sisters would head out, just the four of them, to catch something to show their parents. They had been at the age where their parents were giving them more room to breathe and stretch their legs, but they still weren't allowed to join the pack during the caribou hunts. They always had to stay back towatch and learn. So of course they'd been eager to show off their hunting prowess, and the fact that it turned out to be a competition between them came as no surprise to their parents.

But things were different this time, Remington clearly was no sibling of his and he was so far from home. Not to mention, he didn't mind Remington's presence, it was quite tolerable in fact. He wasn't going to go and tell her though, he didn't want it going to her heard. And neither did he want anyone to think he had gotten soft. Because he hadn't. Not a bit, not even a little. He was still the crass, gruff wolf he had always been and would always be.

"How long will we have? And should we meet back here?" He asked, wanting to know the details before he set off further into the woods in search for their quarry.

The silver wolf was given the rare sight of a grin in answer. Good. He better be up for a challenge because he would have been given one either way. With three brothers she'd always had to have an edge. Everything had been a competition, and proving she could be just as good if not better than them had been a way of life. More so, she was happy to see some healthy competition wasn't scoffed at. If anything it would make time go quicker, while they were actually trying to accomplish something.

"Good," she grinned in turn, a twitch of her tail, eager to start.

The wolf paused in her tracks. Thinking about the terms. A time frame wasn't necessary, but it probably would be best if they didn't do this all day. "Hmm.." Eyes lifted to the sky, and traced down the length of an evergreen tree onto its shadow.

"When the shadows are this far," she jogged over, and placed a white paw where after a good length of time the shadow would return. "Time is up." By then the shadow would turn back to the east as the sun headed west. It might be hard to calculate that as they hunted, but all shadows reversed direction as the sun moved. She made a point to look back at Askan. See if he had a better thought. As for meeting up...

"I think a howl will suffice. Though..." She pulled her mouth side ways. "I think you should give me a head start. I mean you got home advantage and all." She raised her brows, a playful spark to her gold eyes as a ghost of a smirk edged on her lips. Was she teasing? Was she serious? It would have to be his best guess.

Askan watched as Remington pressed her paw into the snow, marking where the shadow would be when it was time for their little game to come to an end. He glanced about them, taking note of where the sun was in the sky now and roughly surmised how long he would have to collect as many rabbits as he could. It was as good of an idea as any he could come up with, so he nodded in understanding and consent. They would have a reasonable amount of time to gather their quarry, but it wasn't as if they would have hours upon hours, or worse yet all day. The time constraint would make things tricky, but interesting. So he had no qualms, because if anything it would spur him on and make him that much more determined to beat his pack mate.

Again, Askan was willing to follow her suggestion. A howl was as good as any way to call the game to an end and signal that it was time for them to meet. This way, they wouldn't have to worry about lugging their catch all the way back here to the forest edge. Her next words, however, weren't so well received. Well, perhaps that was putting it too harshly. It was more accurate to say that he didn't immediately agree to her suggestion. Instead, her words earned her a sharp, questioning glance. That was rather cheeky of her, no? She was trying to grab the advantage whilst she could. Oh and she knew it too, it was hard to catch but Askan could have sworn he saw a flash of amusement in her bright eyes. And her lips, they weren't pressed into a thin line but...

"You've lived here for a while, right? Should've spent your time getting to know the place, rather than admiring your reflection in the creek." He sniffed, his words meant to be a teasing prod, but his tone was a little too clipped, grumbly for it to come across as well meaning.

He rolled his eyes and let out a long huff. He didn't want to lose and letting her go first could really damage his chances of winning, that said he did suppose he did know the ins and outs of the pine forest. But then again, she might have been lying. For all he knew, she did know the woods well, she was just saying she didn't to cheat. To have an unfair lead in this little game of theirs. He was wasting time though, standing around here wasn't going to help him catch any rabbits.

"Fine. But not long. A few moments at most. Go on then, before I change my mind." He flicked his snout, gesturing for her to go whilst she had the chance.

They actually competing to get the most rabbits? (Track and kill) Or to find them and call for reinforcements? I was going with the 2nd but good either way. :3

It was hard to gauge if he hadn't meant to be so rude with that tone. So far, it didn't sound much different. But, it seemed like he was attempting to tease her. But...ouch. She wondered where he'd pulled that quip from. She didn't care about vanity, and it was one of the worst things to accuse her of. Remi was good at this game. Artfully trained by cruel, older brother. "Oh, and how would you know if I look at myself in the creek?" She asked innocently. She didn't gawk at herself, but felt the need to taunt him in turn. Laying it on with thick with a raised brow if to imply he spied on her. But, she didn't need to wait for answer.

It was evident he was displeased, and she was going to give up on the idea. She didn't think he would give her advantage. Even if as far as she knew he could know where a rabbit warren was this very second. The new recruit actually hadn't spent a great deal in these woods. She was a little concerned what larger mammals could be lurking in them, but he didn't need to know that.

All in all he surprised her, realizing she had a point or their time was trickling away. "Yes,sir." She didn't need to be told twice. It was with a faint smirk she bounded forward, smothering the chuckle that wanted to slip from her throat. She knew better than to laugh, push her luck. Now to find out if the extra time would make a difference.

I was thinking of getting the most rabbits! I find the idea of the woofs walking round with mouths full of bunnies funny XD

Her question was innocent enough, but Askan knew what Remington was getting at. He wasn't a creep, but her wording implied that he was. Not only that, but she raised her brow in question as if to say 'go on deny it, I dare you.' And of course that is what he wanted to do, but there was no point, it'd be a waste of time and breath. It'd also make him look like an idiot, so rather than beat a dead horse, Askan huffed and shook his head a little. It was hard for him not to rise to the bait, but for the sake of their competition he did not. They were even now, it was time to start this game of theirs. She'd made her point loud and clear.

With a sudden burst of speed, Remington sprinted off into the woods, kicking up snow in her wake. He watched her go, until she was little more than black dot weaving between the trees. They hadn't agreed as to how long he would wait, so really Askan had the freedom to choose for himself. He could go now if he wanted to, but then she wouldn't really have a long head start and it would make the point of waiting moot. But at the same time, he had no intentions of sitting around in the snow till he got a cold butt. It was a fine line to walk, but after a few more moments or so of waiting, Askan was already starting to get bored, and impatient. Remington was no longer in sight. Now it was his time.

With a grin, Askan rolled his shoulders, dug his paws into the snow and spurred himself off, galloping along as fast as he could through the white woodlands. He weaved through the trees with an unconscious ease, he knew these woods as well as the pack of his paw, if either one of them were going to hit big with the rabbits it was him. And he knew exactly where to find them, well perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration. He knew the rough area, so to speak, but either way he had the clear advantage here. It was only a matter of getting there quickly and tracking them down and finding their little hidy hole. And oh boy, he couldn't wait.
