It was actually quite sad for the girl that she had to head back. Exploration at her own whim had been her lifestyle for so long, it almost felt wrong to be so grounded to one place anymore, especially when everything and everyone still seemed so unfamiliar. That wouldn't be forever though, she told herself. Ember could settle into that homely life easily enough, it just would take time and a pinch of determination. So dutifully, after she had completed her mission, she turned her paws south to make the trek back home.
That didn't mean it had to be the exact same stretch, however. She could still see some new things if she took a different route. This side of the mountain, it was too intoxicating to not contrive some way to see more of it, as Ember had never crossed the range before until this trip. So while here she might have begun to travel east and up the slopes of Mount Dire, she kept in the same direction, deeper into the ghostly woods.
The tendrils of fog that persisted despite the snow curled upward around her pale legs, and up ahead she recognized the distant roar of a waterfall that winter could not stop. Her pace picked up with excitement of what new things she might see.
