Late afternoon/evening. Cloudy. 32º F/ 0 Cº (omg, colddd! 8c )

Fenru Tainn had been busy practicing his tracking skills since the pack hunt and while he had been happy to follow the numerous scents of rabbits, squirrels, and family, he eventually grew bored. His efforts to find even a rabbit hole had all been nothing but fruitless. What use was tracking if one couldn't actually chase or hunt down his target? He shrugged and took a deep breath as he flattened his ears stubbornly. He hated being bored; and, it wasn't very often he found himself in such a state.

He eventually wandered back to the place where Uncle Triell had once taught him how to stow away a freshly caught hare. Sighing, he glanced at the mound of dirt that kept the treasures he started to hide away aside from the occasional collop or dried bone safe from birds and other curious creatures. An oddly shaped pebble, his scrap of boar hide from the pack hunt, and a random stick currently made up his personal cache and he had been hoping to find something else to add to his collection of knick-knacks. One of the things he had been on the lookout for was a deer antler; but little did the young Tainn know however that deer and moose weren't likely to shed their their ornate headgear until the next few months or so.

He frowned to himself and after some time he thought of looking for his siblings. That was perhaps one of the best things about not being an only child, if there wasn't any fun to be had while playing by oneself, then surely there was some form of entertainment to be found by joining or bothering your brother or sister. Or both, actually... Following his nose to the heart of Swift River, he trailed along his brother's path until the scent was thick enough to indicate that Rihael was somewhere just within earshot.

"Rihael!" he loudly barked, glancing around as he stopped in his tracks. "Hey 'Hael!"

Rihael's jaws clamped swiftly and tightly around his own piece of boar hide from the hunt as he lifted into the air. Since that day, the ragged, coarse scrap of skin had been a constant companion at his side, and every so often, he tended to glance at it— or in those rare moments when he was alone, admire it. Tonight he had invented an ingenious game: tossing it as far as he could in the air and running to catch it. As he had been doing for the past half hour, Hael threw it into the air with a grunt. Searching frantically, he dashed toward it, limbs valiantly propelling himself into the air as he aimed for it, jaws agape—

"Hey 'Hael!"

Oof. His toy flopped down right on top of his head, falling over his eyes and ears as Fenru's voice sounded from nowhere. "Hey," he responded, his embarrassment showing; he attempted to blow the hide out of his eyes, to no avail, before ducking and using a forelimb to slide it to the ground. When his vision was restored, his younger brother had appeared before him, and the kid grinned, using a forepaw to attempt to flip the hide over to Fen.

"You as bored as I am?" Hael asked, trotting toward his brother and stopping a short length away. He plunked down into a seat, tail swishing across the the ground behind him idly. "There's like, nothing to do around here." Although, even Fenru's simple appearance had got him interested; when there was nothing to do, there was always mischief to be made with your brother.

Something in front of him landed on a dense surface with a flop and Fen darted through the boscage and thick, dying grasses to see Rihael with his boar hide draped over his head. The younger Tainn's tail wagged and he smiled when Hael acknowledged him. He even tossed the prized object over to him in some sort of a welcoming gesture.

Fenru nudged it back a few inches with his nose. "Yeah, I'm bored," he grumbled in reply, nodding in agreement that there was nothing to do. "What've you been up to?" he asked. "Caught anything recently?"

"Nah," he admitted without hesitation; his boar hide had kept him entertained enough recently with fantasies of hunting large game that he hadn't even really given smaller prey a thought. But now, as his brother mentioned it, he did feel sort of an emptiness in his stomach. "But I could— hey, actually," he added, a perfect idea having popped into his head, "Come check this out." He flashed Fen a grin before turning tail, making sure to bring the boar hide along for good measure.

Why hadn't he thought of this before? The mystery den he'd discovered a week ago was only a few minutes away. Rihael knew exactly where to find it. He'd noticed it shortly before the pack hunt while wandering around the Grove, but before he'd had a chance to investigate, Corinna had come to collect them. He couldn't believe he forgot about it! Hael turned to lead Fen to the spot, hoping his brother would follow.

Fenru's downturned mouth drew up in a flat line in response to his brother's suggestion of investigating something. His coppery eyes narrowed suspiciously when Hael gave him a grin before turning away, "Ooookay. Suuuuure." Mustering up what curiosity he could work with and pushing away the skepticism churning in his chest, he trailed after Rihael, hoping wherever he was taking him wasn't going to be too far away or turn out to be one of his brother's unamusing antics.

"Check what out?" he asked when he caught up and matched Hael's stride. His gaze kept darting to the copse on either side of them, warily keeping a close eye out for landmarks that told him which direction they were headed off to. "And where're we going?"

Once Fen was in tow, Rihael took up a swift trot. He remembered that the den had a distinct and foreign scent, slightly pungent and earthy, and the trail was easy enough to follow if a wolf was looking for it. It hadn't occurred to him that someone might have found it before; to him, it was an exciting secret, and he glanced over to his brother at his question, bringing his head up after sniffing the ground. "C'mon Fen, don't be such a girl about it," he teased with a laugh, crossing over into the other kid's path to attempt to knock him off balance. "Anyway, we're almost here, we're not going very far."

Within a few minutes he stopped, nose to the ground again, after their scenery had changed somewhat. The bushes here were thick and tangled— good, this was the right spot. Secretly glad he hadn't got them lost, Hael's orange eyes narrowed as his gaze swept the ground. Right around here somewhere—

"There." Right in front of them, a small hole in the ground. Giving Fen an excited grin, he bent to the ground again, taking a step or two closer to the den before casting a glance over his shoulder. "Found it before the hunt... too small for a wolf, don't you think?"

I was thinking groundhogs maybe? :D

Yeahhhh! Ground hogs!

"C'mon Fen, don't be such a girl about it," his brother goaded. Fenru's ears turned forward and he picked up his pace to keep in step with Rihael. "I'm not!" he barked back. "I was jus' wonderiiiiiing. I mean, pffff..." He was going to continue on to express his disapproval of his sibling testing the wilderness beyond the packlands, but the elder Tainn had stopped and put his nose to the ground and Fenru had trotted right past him.

He mimicked his actions and sniffed at the forest floor before realizing that the forest around them had grown upwards in thickets and hedges rather than tall, lanky trees and open sky. "Are y--" he was quieted by the vocal confirmation and the grin that his brother donned to reveal that they were right where they needed to be. Hesitantly, he took a step forward and peered over to where his brother had found a burrow. Fen snorted to keep from chuckling at the statement about the hole being too small for a wolf. "Nawwwww," he sarcastically agreed. "We'd totally be able to fit down there. Both of us. With room to spare."

Peering from Hael to the tunnel, he cautiously lowered his nose to the entrance, inhaled deeply then withdrew his nose in case some sort of weasel - or goodness forbid, a snake - conveyed how angry they were about him sticking his schnoz into their home. "What lives in it?" he asked rather stupidly after realizing the aroma deep within smelled nothing like that serpent skin he had unearthed a few weeks ago.

Welp here's my monthy post >________> sorry sorry

Fenru's sarcasm went right over Rihael's head. He gave his brother a quizzical look before, not about to waste another second, following him to the entrance of the den. After Fen was done, he took a deep whiff for himself, drawing his head back quickly in slight disgust. It didn't smell like anything he'd ever... smelled before. "Maybe it's like, some kind of really huge snake or something," he mused, unable to resist poking his nose in, further this time, for another sample. He clenched his eyes shut, waiting for something to latch fiercely onto the tip of his nose, but... nothing did. Maybe it was abandoned?

After a moment he stood up again, immediately at work sniffing the ground for more clues. Whatever lived here, its scent was all over the place. "The scents are so fresh," he deduced, mind now in super-sleuth mode, glancing sideways at Fenru with his nose still to the ground. It took him an actual glance at his left hind paw to notice that he was actually standing in— "Fen! There's two! Maybe they're connected!" And connected they were, little did he know.

Totally fine. I've been away for a bit. <3

Fenru's face furrowed and wrinkled. A really huge snake? That was absolutely ridiculous! "Suuuuure," he scoffed, not the least bit scared by the idea of finding a snake in the tunnel. He had made up his mind by now that the scent he had picked up was not a serpent of any kind. He stared for some time at the burrow before perking back up when Rihael commented about how the scent of their prey was still fresh.

"Wha'?" he questioned, his eyes lowering to the second entrance his sibling had discovered. "Oh!" In a rather comical fashion he dropped an ear into the tunnel to see if he could hear Rihael shuffling about instead of attempting to excogitate and determine whether or not the creatures here lived in one large underground maze. He anticipated hearing his brother's voice call out but instead was greeted with a startling and rather alien-sounding grunt.

Fenru gasped. "It's in here!" he shouted, starting to dig as the hunter within him awoke with a small growl. "Dig it up!"

Having twisted into an awkward stance in order to stick his nose into the hole at his hind paw without moving his feet, Hael heard the grunt coming from inside the hole. His attention snapped to his brother— Fen heard it too! There was something in here, and it was alive! There was no time to think!

Hael frantically began digging at his little burrow, sending soft dirt flying in every direction, including in the direction of his face. "I'm digging, I'm digging! He sputtered with dirt in his mouth, orange eyes furrowed desperately as his paws tore and tore at the earth. Fen's growl stirred up one in his brother, and when he was down to his elbows in the ground, he felt something furry brush against his paw. "Fen!" He exclaimed, jumping back, admittedly startled. The adrenaline pumping through him, his chest rose and fell with quick breaths. "It has fur! I felt it!" And then, a whisper as he realized it could hear him. "C'mere, come see if you can see it!"

He stared down into the dark tunnel, glancing hurriedly back and forth from the ground to Fen in case the thing made the mistake of showing itself once more. The idea of blocking the other hole didn't cross his mind, as he was transfixed by the alien thing with fur...
