Aurora Heights until the night is over

The day had been nice. For once he didn't feel frozen solid and there wasn't snow falling from above. Even if clouds lingered that seem to threaten them with more bad weather, he felt good. This warming weather had to be some kind of sign that spring was truly on its way. Kyna too was like a countdown to spring. Heigen did his best to provide nutritious things in the cache for her to snag. Granted he had to wonder if they ever made it to her or if someone else might eat them. Regardless he supposed his work wasn't going to waste.

His attempt at getting to know everyone was going well. He had the names and faces along with other casual information about all the females and that left him with one last wolf. His male alpha. As his second (not that it took much work to get the role) it was his responsibility as much as it was politeness to get to know the shadowy male. If Heigen recalled properly the dark male seemed to enjoy the nightlife. The older male was more of an early bird so he hoped he could snatch the male for a quick conversation before settling in for the night.

He let out a soft woof to see if the man he was looking for might answer. If not there was always the chance to try again at dawn.

He knew names and faces along with their positions in Aurora. His scarlet mate was the social butterfly of the duo, for the pack was built on friendships she had formed. If it was not for Kyna the small group would not have settled on the mountain. Greer, despite his selective mutism and fractured way of speaking, was attempting to get to know the wolves he would now be spending most of his time with. However, it was difficult for the shadow to break old habits.

When he wasn’t tending to his pregnant mate Greer was getting to know the lay of the land and reacquainting himself with former haunts. It had almost been a year since the Archer left for the north, following his sister and the silver spider to a fresh start. He toyed around with the idea of venturing west and visiting his birth pack, but he was not sure if he wanted to. After learning that his parents had passed Greer was not sure what he was going to find there. He did not even know if any of his family was still left in Willow Ridge or if the pack was still standing.

Sunset was when the shadow felt most alive. While most animals were returning to their nests, preparing to bunk down for the night, Greer used the darkness to his advantage. It was not the best time to interact with his packmates, or to scour the mountain for loners, but it gave him the isolation he craved.

As he was about to slink away the gentle woof from his second ceased his movements, his brows narrowing in concern. Heigen was the oldest of the mountain misfits and the one he knew the least about. He approached the older male with a raised brow and a soft smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, his tail wagging in greeting as his tongue remained still.

It seemed the alpha moved like a shadow as much as he seemed like one. Heigen respectfully let his tail settle between his legs and kindly nodded his head. "I believe I'm a bit overdue on getting to know you." He chuckled softly. "I've noticed you enjoy the night more so it seemed like the perfect time to try and find you." His head looked up towards the darkening sky where the lights that named this home would soon dance about. Quickly he directed his attention back onto his young, darker alpha. "Perhaps I can accompany you on the start of a patrol? Or whatever it is that you prefer to do first." The second's tail swayed happily behind his large form.

Heigen wondered why someone would prefer to linger about in the dark but then again it was never truly dark around here. The lights above always gave some kind of lighting to go off of. There was also the fact that Greer was dark so he blended in easily. Heigen supposed he could also tack on that it was nice to have some kind of night guard when most of the others were sleeping in the den. The more he thought about it the more he was sure he could come up with hundreds of reasons for being so nocturnal.

With his head tilted to the side he listened patiently to the older male, a soft smile stretching across his dark lips. Out of the five wolves that made up their small pack Heigen was the one he knew the least, despite the agouti being his second. His scarlet mate had done well in acquiring members for their hodgepodge group of misfits. She was the approachable one out of the pair, whereas socializing had never been one of Greer’s better qualities. Even know, despite his position in Aurora, he wanted to slink away from the tawny male and observe the stars in solitude. However, that was no longer an option. At least, not in this particular moment.

He was not used to having others accompany him on his patrols. Not since Celandine ran with Whitestone, who joined him on many scouting patrols when the northern pack had first formed. It was not something he was accustom to but in order to see Aurora thrive Greer would make it work. He did not want to disappoint his scarlet mate, who had worked feverishly in order to claim the mountain back.

The shadow gave a sharp nod in response, inviting the agouti to follow him with a flick of his tail. “Patrol,” he responded, finally, his the single word rolling smoothly off his tongue. “Learning land again. Long time since Greer here.” He shrugged, dismissing his own words as he padded forward, allowing his second to fall in beside him.
