All three litters had finally arrived in Hearthwood. The five new arrivals were healthy and thriving, just as Lachesis had hoped. They were certainly going to have their paws full—especially with five rambunctious children wrecking havoc on the older wolves—but with the collection of wolves they had acquired in recent weeks, they would have plenty of puppy sitters available. The ghost had been making sure that all three mothers were eating and providing milk for their children while also ensuring the rest of the pack was doing what was expected of them. There were patrols that needed to be done while he was tied up at the dens, and caches that needed to be filled. So far, the newcomers were working out well, and pulling their weight to provide for the pack. Even Aytigin—the wolf he had been the most apprehensive about. The large male certainly was trying, and Lachesis commended him for that.
Now that the river pack was overrun by small bundles of fur Lachesis was able to stretch his legs past the borders, straying into the lowlands. He skirted the monadnock, heading south once more, to the place he had collected sweet grass with Askan. He had promised the ebony wolf that he would bring a bundle of herbs for the expecting mother in Wild Rye; he just hoped he was not too late. He moved quickly, the bundle of plants hanging from his jaws as he honed in on the fields in the distance. After spending so many weeks cooped up inside the Kingswood it felt strange to be in such an open setting, so exposed. Part of him still worried that Mittani was still lurking around, but it had been weeks without another incident. He was hopeful that the pale rogue had vacated the lands of Lore.
Once he reached the edge of the fields Lachesis placed the herbs on the ground before taking a few steps back, creating as much distance between himself and the borders as possible. He threw his snout to the sky to call for any of the Rye wolves in hopes that one of them was lurking nearby. Although he would have preferred to see the ebony guardian he had come across a few times Lachesis would not protest an encounter with a member he had not met before. He was, after all, trying to form some sort of alliance with these wolves, for he had not gotten a chance to get to know them properly. Before Askan visited the borders of Hearthwood the ghost had made his own assumptions about the wolves to the west, for he had been wary of their intentions.
He waited patiently, hoping this encounter would be quick in painless. Lachesis did not have time for heavy conversation but he was not opposed to exchanging a few words before returning to the redwoods.
