He had not anticipated his first outing would end up like this. Truthfully, Neel could not have anticipated anything. He had been an excited, bubbling puppy earlier this morning, running in circles around his mother. Now he had run as far as he could, trembling and hiding under a bush. It wasn't very good hiding, but Neel felt hidden enough. His wet, puppy blue eyes stared off in the direction he had run from as he waited for his mom to return. And she would, eventually, he was certain of it. He just had to wait. Soon enough a pale wolf appeared. It could not have been anyone besides his mother, and so the puppy ran out towards them, happily squealing Momma! Momma! Momma!

But he was not showered in kisses and nuzzles, and she didn't speak to him in that soft way that she did to make him feel better. She didn't smell familiar, and when he looked up and saw those bright, orange eyes Neel jolted away from the man. "Momma?" he asked, and the stranger shook his head. Neel glared at the man, angry. "Momma!" he demanded, getting teary-eyed again.

"She's gone. Momma's gone."

The tears started again, losing his words. He sadly babbled, crying for Eidolon. The man cooed at him, kissing the tears away. It took a little coaxing, but finally the boy quieted. He hiccuped and shivered, pressing his face into the white wolf's pelt. He was showered with more kisses, the man talked in the gentle way his Momma did. He wasn't as good as her, but right then he was too exhausted to care. Shortly after, Neel fell asleep.

Larkspur glanced in the direction of the lake, nervously licking at his maw. When the boy was out, he gently picked up the creamish pup and made his way back home.
