look what you made me do

It was his respect for Greer and Kyna that kept him from straight out romping through the willows. How long that would last he couldn't say. His paws itched to tread there. His want and intentions a strange mixture. But, his wound had just healed, and he should probably try not to get a new one too soon.

Through the thin blanket of snow there were shriveled red-orange flowers that caught his eye now and again. They were somewhat familiar to him, though he'd never seen this much. He could guess this place looked like a scarlet field in the warmer seasons. Would he see it for himself?

Dark ear twitched, and he cast another glance behind his shoulder. This place couldn't be theirs too. He was hoping it was the safe alternative for the time being. He wasn't going to be caught off guard.

Fortunately for the scarlet girl the snow was worse on the mountain, but it did not mean the forests below were free of the frigid substance. It clung to the rocks as she made her way down the western side, her mountain paws working expertly to maneuver her safely and quickly over the rugged terrain. A sigh of relief escaped her as she met solid ground, her black-tipped tail wagging gently behind her. She had ventured to the Rise before—her mother had told her about one of her earlier meetings with her father among the fiery flowers. Perhaps it was why she was so fond of the place. It wasn’t anything like the mountain—not as glamours or magnificent—but it was a good escape. A temporary one. Where she could slip away, unnoticed by her parents, and seek some solitude.

Or run into one of her cousins. Morganna claimed they would be arriving any day, which meant Revon Archer needed to be on high alert. And impress them. She didn’t want them thinking she was some reject Archer.

However, a familiar scent reached her nose, drawing her closer. She blinked, her fiery eyes seeking out the dark shape among the white. It was the newest addition to the Heights—whatshisface. He wouldn’t rat her out to her parents, would he? Her nose wrinkled at the thought, her steps tentative as she approached him. Wha’cha doin’? She asked, her head tipped to the side, coyote-like ears pinned forward.

Black nose worked along faint tracks of a rabbit. Lead me to your warren, he thought. He was doubtful there was one right here. If there was it surely would been marked or guarded in some form. Well, that wouldn't stop him. He wouldn't mind ruining some stuff. Again, this had to be neutral territory. He bit back an annoyed sigh, then raised his head to check over his side. In that time the youngest of the Heights inquired of him, and his eyes landed on her. "You're pretty quiet," he commented. She had sure sneaked down here. But, that wasn't an answer.

"Well, I'm thinking about finding a good rabbit hole or invading enemy territory? Got a preference?" He cocked a brow in question, but couldn't hold an entire straight face. There was mirth in his silver-blue eyes. Though he could have thrown the question back at her, having her own reasoning for being here. This was more fun. He didn't for one minute think she was too young to be here, too far to be in trouble. This was any wolves territory, and she had to be half a year old by now. An age where most started using their longer legs. If she could get down the mountain surely her parents ought to know she would do it when she wanted.

You’re pretty quiet. Her nose lifted rather smugly, a crooked grin uncoiling onto her dark lips. Fortunately she had acquired that skill from her father, who moved like the shadows. While she was not cloaked in the same ebony fur that adorned her father, the scarlet Archer had acquired his gangly legs, which made sneaking around much easier.

She didn’t answer at first, her tangerine pools fixated on the greyscale male as she waited for an answer. The girl wasn’t fond of the forests that flanked the mountain on both the eastern and western sides, but she was very fond of exploring. Which, unfortunately, meant slinking down from the Heights and embracing the towering trees with reluctant paws. Her ears cupped forward as he spoke, an amused expression tugging at her mahogany features. Why not both? She asked, her maw canted to the side as she turned away, her nostrils flaring as she attempted to pick up the faint scent of rabbit. As far as she was concerned the Ridge wolves were not enemies—why had the newcomer called them that? Unless he was talking about another pack in the area, which was entirely possible. But she kept the question to herself—for now.

The brute paid note to the expression his comment made stoying it away for later. How could he not be enchanted by that grin? She knew she was. She seemed to only be waiting for someone to notice.

His two choices must have held some appeal. The young lady thoughtful. When she answered the man merely smirked. Clever. He stood as if in salute. "Very well," he formally declared, and with playful whip of his tail he went to looking again. Maybe, the Ridge wasn't their enemy, but he doubted his face would be welcomed near their realm. He was more than happy to test the theory if it came to it.

With the youngest Archer adding her nose to the quest, he kept the rabbit tracks mind. But, he did not follow them directly. He could already tell they didn't lead into a burrow. With a quick walk, he was also mindful where she was, and went not to insult her by stepping where she already checked. His back to the alter, he wondered if they were better off trekking to the meadow up ahead.

She flashed him another cheeky grin as he responded, his tail sweeping behind him like a banner. It wasn’t trespassing if they didn’t get caught, right? However, trespassing would surely get the Archer into heaps of trouble. She had heard about the recent incident and didn’t want to be the cause of another dispute between neighbours. Especially since some members of the pack were related to her.

Sauntering past him the girl lowered her nose to the ground as she began following the scent of rabbit. Like the dark male Revon did not follow the tracks—instead she walked parallel to them, keeping them in her peripheral as she meandered through the rise. The desaturated male kept his distance from the Archer, which she appreciated. She wasn’t going to learn if she had someone hovering over her, watching her every move, monitoring her. Yuck!

The little fox watched as her dark packmate made his way toward the alter, her own oversized paws trailing after his dark figure. Where had this pesky rabbit gone?! A frown graced her features, her gaze sweeping over the fresh powder of snow. Just as she was about to sigh in defeat—there! there it was! She had caught scent of the fuzzy creature, her paws nearly vibrating with excitement. She let out a soft woof! to alert the dark male before motioning to her left with a flick of her nose. There!

His sky colored eyes kept roving over the dead vegetation near the stone. He was thinking it was a likely place. He just hadn't reached far enough to check for himself, when her woof alerted him. Huh? With ears pricked forward, his gaze flicked to her, and than he noticed the strange nest of grass and weeds drawn in a small arch. The snow an extra layer. The burrow!

He padded on over. "Nice work," he whispered with a wry grin. Now to actually get this rabbit.

"If I dig into the side you try to catch it when it comes out." A plan formulated, he practically pranced a few feet back. Bushing against pokey brush. Once there he crushed small twigs, and began pawing through the snow and whatever else was loose. Throwing it behind him. It wasn't until he reached the grass did he start to turn at the hard earth. Little by little he whittled a hole. Hopefully a disturbance this far from the entrance would send the bugger out.

The girl’s tail swayed gently behind her as she struggled to make as little noise as possible. She had found the burrow! Her paws were buzzing but she remained where she was, her fiery gaze fixated on the older male as he padded in her direction. She offered him a bright smile in response to his praise, her ears cupped forward as he began to explain the plan of attack. Okay. She could do this. No, she had to do this. Prey was scarce on the mountains with the arrival of snow—every piece of meat counted, even if it was just a little rabbit. She nodded in response, her body angled toward the entrance of the burrow, poised and ready for action. Summiter sauntered over to the side of the burrow, his paws working feverishly to dig against the compact dirt. Her legs were tense with suspense, her brows narrowed in determination as she waited for a familiar tawny shape to surface from the entrance…

It did not take long.

A flash of beige appeared. She waited, her body low against the sea of white snow, her tangerine gaze never once wavering from the tuft of tan fur. The critter hopped away from the burrow, exposing itself to the cold November air. That was when Revon chose to strike.

She lurched forward, quick and precise like a bullet. Too fast for the poor, unsuspecting rabbit. Her paws collided with the small creature, her jaws closing in on its neck. She tumbled with the rabbit, a triumphant grin tugging at her mouth as she flopped down in the snow, the limp creature hanging from between her teeth as she searched for her companion’s dark shape.

He hadn't intentionally put pressure her on her. He just believed she would do her best, and that was what really mattered. The learning curb of hunting sucked, and mistakes had to be made now to likely be avoided later. Still, it was nice to see her take the task in all seriousness, and prepare herself. He didn't exactly think highly of his teaching skills.

Eventually, the digging got easier, and he had a tiny hole. A sudden flick of motion stilled his actions, and unknowingly he held his breath, attention captured. The young Archer would move in a blink, tackling her target, and seizing it without trouble. With a triumphant laugh he shouted, "Nice!" Then he jumped from the small perch, trotting over with his tail in full swing. "You strike like lightning." She was at the less clumsy stage, but he was still impressed. It was a victory, and she would soon be taking down much larger prey. Stifling the urge to lick his lips, he awaited her next course of action.
