It was breathtaking.

Days had come and gone for her beneath the veil of the forest's heady canopy. It wasn't until she'd finally happened upon the valley before her that Lyanna realized how much the enclosure of the trees had felt nearly suffocating. Even for that fact, from her position atop a ridge that marked the end of the woodland's treeline and the beginning of the glen's rolling hills, she was all at once elated. Her golden eyes sparkled with interest as they roved over the greens of the hills' swaying grasses, the glinting white of the creek's modest waves and ripples, and the fiery and pale sunset-hues of the blossoms punctuating the magnolia trees. The quaint vale loomed in the peacefulness she hadn't realized she'd been longing for. Sure to carry with her what was left of this morning's kill - the remnants of a hare - the girl left Red Fern Forest behind and stepped out into the sunlight that immediately enveloped her in warmth.

After carefully stowing her dinner away in a well-dug hole in the creek's mossy bank, she'd spent a time roaming. The tall grass was soft where it swayed against her long legs and tawny sides. Here and there she would come across clusters of weathered boulders and petrified trunks of fallen trees, taking her time to inspect the crevices and inhale the smell of earth and rain that lingered beneath them where the dirt was damp. It was beneath the branches of a particular magnolia where she found some delight in the way the saturated shades of its blossoms faded to the prettiest pale lavender or creamy white. The shores lining the creek were soft and silty, their mud slipping easily between her toes. The creek itself was surprisingly cold, but its waters were crystal clear. There was one bend that caught her eye.

In the curve of it she discovered a shoal of unusually iridescent minnows. They would float in place or dart about in every direction, but for some reason they favored their little corner of the world. With the sunshine bright across her back, she simply watched the way the existed, wondering what life below was like for them and knowing that it was somehow much different than the one she lead up above. Wading out into the shallow water, the girl let them nip and flit about her toes.
