Jynx Myrddin
Dated May 30th. Patchy clouds, early afternoon. Jynx, @Mako  @Oksana   are about to make an unwelcome surprise.

jynx myrddin

Productivity was the name of the game today. With Lachesis's and Lilya's young pups already emerging from the den and the numbers of the pack swelling, it was now more important than ever to make sure everyone was well fed. From the oldest wolves in the pack, to the youngest and in between. Having experienced motherhood herself last year, Jynx knew that Lilya in particular would need plenty of sustenance to continue to provide milk for her children. Until they were ready to be weaned, of course. The storms had seemed to ease, deep rolls of thunder and pelting raindrops replaced by scattered clouds and filtered rays of sunshine. This was the perfect day to set out on a mission to fill the Surge's caches.

She would not be going alone though. After the successful hunt by the falls, Mako's natural talent had not escaped her keen eye. She had pulled the young male aside to chat in private, complimenting him of the skill he had exhibited that day and on many more. Though it was she who was the most experienced hunter in the pack, at newly five years old, the woman knew she wouldn't be around forever. One day someone just as reliable as her would have to fill her place, and she definitely saw potential in the slate hued wolf. She had gathered Oksana too, testing the waters to see if the raven colored female was willing. She had not forgotten that day when she and Lilya had observed her stalking a herd of deer, and the interest she had shown. When she saw talent in a young wolf, far be it for her not to nurture it. "What do you say? Shall we take a stab at it and see if we can't bring something home?" Had been her words with a slight edge of cheekiness. There was just something about these two that she liked.

Some hours later and they were quite a ways from Driftwood, but still strode through the forests of the lake with a self assured confidence. After all, they were the first to have laid claim to this region and had no reason to suspect anyone else would. But it was vast and desirable, rich in prey. Who wouldn't want to settle down? Jynx led the way, diligently pursuing the trail of a small herd of white tailed deer. Their distinct prints in the muddy soil were easy to follow but with the lingering stench of coyotes in the air, the herd was on edge. They'd have to wait until they could make a move. Which was just as well. Three heads were better than one away from the pack, with dozens of crazed coyotes possibly lurking around every corner.

The herd had led them to the northern point of the lake, and with steady patience, Jynx watched, offering tips or tidbits of advice to her pack mates. She was mindful of Oksana, aware that her leg was still compromised. With a tilt of her head, she eyed the dark female. "How are you feeling? Think you could manage it if we decide to go for one of them?" She had yet to notice the new scent in the air. They were still too far away, but a shift in the wind just might do the trick to get their attention.

Weeks had passed since she was sure her leg was fully healed. As she'd promised she was taking things slowly, testing it out. With the warmer weather she'd been swimming and doing things to slowly build the strength back up in it. She now felt that she had a good handle on what it could handle. Like Lachesis had said it wasn't the same, she still walked with a limp, it wasn't too prominent but it was there. It was just a reminder of the stupid thing she'd done and a lesson learned. She was ready to get back to her duties and learn how she could still do them wit her leg the way it was. It was a process but one she was willing to go through.

Oksana was a little surprised when Jynx had asked her to go on a hunt with her and Mako. While she wasn't sure at first she'd agreed, it was her chance to maybe learn how to hunt with her leg the way it was. She was a little nervous about it with her leg and having never hunted in a group before though she'd seen group hunts. Still she agreed to go with a nod not wanting to pass up the opportunity. Oksana knew she would just have to be cautious.

They had been out in the forest for some time and she had kept up surprisingly well despite her leg. She did move a little slower than the others but kept right behind them. She watched the female having recognized her skill in hunting for the things that she did. The tracking and the way she moved as she followed the trail of the doe. Oksana didn't want to miss any of it so that maybe one day she could be just as good. There was one thing she wouldn't do and there was let her leg hold her back. She would find a good balance she knew it would just take time.

As they moved around the northern part of the lake the crow stayed close to Jynx to hear what she had to offer. She was surprised when the woman turned to ask her how she was holding up. “I'm doing okay. I think I can but maybe I should stay in the back so I can keep my own pace.” It seemed like the best idea that way there wouldn't he a chance they would lose their prey because she wasn't fast enough. She was still just getting used to her leg and it's limitations.

@Jynx Sorry that took forever!

Mako was quiet as they walked, soaking up the little tidbits of information and advice on hunting that Jynx doled out as they traveled. He was a little bit nervous to impress the older wolf, she'd taken him under her wing in hunting for the time being and he didn't want to disappoint. Outwardly, he seemed calm, if not a little withdrawn, but a closer inspection would show the nervous way he licked his lips and yawned out of anxiety rather than boredom. He didn't know Oksana very well, but was still worried the dark yearling would have trouble keeping up with the way she obviously favored one leg.

As they came to a stop at the northern end of the lake, Mako was relieved to see Jynx checking in with the young wolf. As much as he wanted this hunt to be successful, it wouldn't be much of a success if one of his packmates got hurt. Mako stepped away from the two, letting them have their moment as he tipped his nose to the air, mouth slightly parted as if he were tasting the wind itself. His mouth watered at the musky smell of the herd nearby but... Mako lowered his head, white brows knitting as a thoughtful scowl settled on his face. It was faint, but he could detect something else on the wind.

"Jynx?" He hissed in a harsh whisper, looking back at her over his shoulder.

 OOC: Minor swears

In her eyes, she did not see Oskana's injured leg as an issue. She couldn't be certain if the girl would be slowed down by a limp for the rest of her life, but if that turned out to be the case, she thought it best that she learn to adapt to her injury early. With her case in particular, just because her leg made the going slow, did not mean that was necessarily a bad thing. A hunter needed to practice patience. Strike too soon or get over eager, and the hunt was spoiled. During the actual hunt itself, Jynx saw potential for the Baranski female to use the art of the ambush to her advantage, should she embrace it. She wasn't too surprised when she suggested hanging back, going at a pace she was comfortable at. "If that's what works best for you, then by all means." She said in a voice that was by no means pushing the maturing wolf beyond the limits of her comfort.

Mako's hidden nervousness on the other hand, was completely lost on the more experienced hunter. His quiet facade and naturally roughish demeanor served him well in hiding his insecurities. But even if he should let a tiny sliver show...she wouldn't think lesser of him. She was a patient teacher, forgiving of minor mistakes. Only when the packs resources were running low and the stakes were high, was she less lenient when it came to errors. In the distance she thought she spotted movement, and her instincts began to kick in. The herd was close. She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply. Something didn't belong. Mako smelled it too, the scent of others. Her yellow eyes flew open and she approached his side, her steps tense. "Shit." Her hackles began to raise instinctively, while taking several steps forward to investigate the scent further, to confirm what she suspected.

It was her first hunt since she'd injured her leg and it was just recently healed. While she wanted to get back to her duties and helping the pack she also didn't want to reinjure her leg. Lachesis had been clear on what could happen if she wasn't careful. Staying back and moving at her own pace seemed to be the best choice in this instance. She let Jynx know that and the huntress seemed to be okay with that. The crow smiled, I think so with my injury being so freshly healed. Oksana understood that she could already have a limp for the test of her life and there wasn't any reason she should make it worse.

The herd was close and for a long moment her attention was drawn toward them. The crow scented the air just like she watched the two older wolves do. She was careful to pay attention to what they each did so that she could learn more about hunting. Her mother had taught her a lot but she knew there was still plenty to learn. Orange gaze turned on Mako as he spoke Jynx name. They widened at the woman reaction to what she had smelled on the air she stepped up to where her packmates where and sniffed the air again. She too smelled what they smelled and Immediately went on alert looking around them so they wouldn't be caught off guard.

@Jynx

Mako felt the fur along his spine bristle, amber eyes darting and the herd nearly forgotten as he looked at the foliage around them, half expecting a pack of wolves to suddenly materialize the more he stared. First coyotes, and now this? Mako looked at Jynx from the corner of his eye as she came to stand along beside him. Her quiet curse confirmed what was clearly evident in her stance: that this had unsettled her as much as it had him.

Of course he'd known they weren't the only wolves here, but they were at least allied with Shallow's Edge. This new presence was an unknown. Prey was scarce enough with the truce that they would leave the falls to the Edge wolves, but now this? Just where were the wolves of the Drift supposed to hunt now? Up on the damned mountainside?

Mako huffed, the long sigh rumbling in his chest in a low growl. "What do we do now?" He whispered, looking to Jynx and trying to push down the urge to stomp off and confront the strangers immediately. And what did this mean for their hunt? The last thing he wanted was to risk life and limb taking down prey only for a pack of wolves to spring up out of nowhere and steal it from them.

Coyotes were bad enough, but apparently, the least of their problems. Now, the situation for the Surge wolves had gotten much more serious. With the unmistakable scent of multiple wolves laying claim to this area, so close to their own doorstep, was dire. Tightly bound shoulder muscles clenched, her dark lips peeling back in a silent sneer and a flashing of white teeth. Knowing that their home, the territory that Lachesis had worked so hard for was being infringed upon, made her blood boil.

These were their hunting grounds. While they were allied with Shallows Edge and had agreed to stay away from the region closer to their falls, the Surge wolves could not afford to, and would not tolerate yet another competitor for resources. The relationship with the Shallows had been set, established before the wolves of Driftwood settled here, claiming the lake. But for a new pack to lay claim so close must have been aware of their own presence, or downright disrespectful.

Keeping her eyes peeled for any signs of wolves emerging in the distance, an ear flicked in response to Mako's question. Their hunt was ruined. Trailing after quarry this close to the boundary of a new and unknown pack was asking for trouble. Even if said prey in her mindset, rightfully belonged to them. The more pressing matter was the unwelcome discovery the trio had made. "We head back. Inform Lachesis and Lilya as soon possible." She gritted out between her teeth, sharing a glare of disgust with Mako. "I'd like to barge in there and tear a new one into their hides as much as you do, but we need to go about this sensibly. But..." She stepped forth, this time with purpose, hugging the boundary between Surge territory and the borders of the trespassers. In a blatant show of both dominance and of who truly owned this land, she squatted and deposited her chemical scent over the boundary. "...it doesn't hurt to leave a little calling card." She finished with a smug, toothy smirk.

It wasn't the scent if coyote's that had caught their attention but that of other wolves and not just one. Oksana had enough experience to know that that many scents together meant there was a pack. What she didn't know was what it meant exactly but it was clear as she watched and listened to Jynx and Mako it was very clear that this was a bad thing. The crow looked around them expecting the whole pack to appear from the forest ready to attack them. That didn't happen though and she was glad for it since she still wasn't completely recovered.

This was a whole new lesson for the yearling having never been in such a situation. When Mako asked what they should do her gaze turned on Jynx to see what she had to say. The older woman did have more experience, at least in Oksana's eyes. Jynx was clearly angry about the situation but it her words told Oksana that it was best to tell their alphas about it before taking any action. It was something she'd heard from her mother multiple times before.

The crow was ready to leave then especially when Jynx said that they needed to act sensibility about this. She'd started to turn to go but realized that Jynx had moved toward the border before placing a mark of her own. Oksana looked on with wide eyes as the huntress finished up and then Mako did the same leaving the yearling very confused. That was something she would have to ask about later but now was clearly not the time as Jynx set off toward home and Oksana was right behind her not wanting to stick around just in case the wolves of the strange pack did show up. Just as they were turning to leave their attention was caught by something else. They weren't weren't the only ones letting the new pack know they were in the area. The yearling had a feeling that they also weren't going to be heading for home just yet either.

@Jynx Lol just noticed we summoned some coyotes so I guess I'll deal with those here (at least there's 3 of us anyways??)

He knew what Jynx's answer would be before she said it. Chasing prey into another pack's territory was practically asking for a fight, and they weren't at that point yet. But he could see this annoyed Jynx as much as it did him, at least. Mako looked back over his shoulder, his lips pulled up and wrinkling his snout into an irritated snarl. Not only had these intruders just settled down smack dab in their hunting grounds, but they'd managed to spoil the day's hunt. Mako didn't mind a failed hunt now and then, it was part of the game after all, but it was different when the failure was from something out of their control like this.

Mako smirked at the little gift Jynx left for them. He was never one to shirk the opportunity to piss all over someone else's property, swiftly adding his own scent to the mix before following after his mentor. But it seemed like they weren't the only ones marking things up in this neck of the woods. Mako's gaze turned, hackles bristling at the 3 coyotes milling about not far from them. He grinned wolfishly. This was a rival pack's territory after all, what did Mako care if he chased some coyotes into their borders? Grinning wolfishly, he charged at the trio of coyotes with a rough bellowing bark.
