Right, right. His bad. He was trying to reason with a child — with one that said things like E'splorin' and couldn't form a coherent sentence. Reason didn't work in this situation, and Laurel was quickly finding out that reason seemed to rarely work in any situation. He thought about screaming, and the thought of shaking the small child until some sense found its way into her tiny little fragile skull. Laurel could have shouted at her, but knew that the coyotes would be right on them the instant he did, and that it'd only be to vent his own frustrations with the girl.

"Too bad," he had to take matters into his own paws at this point. Laurel scooped the girl up by the scruff again, determined to hold on tighter this time, and tried to escape the inevitable.

The coyotes were sneaky, though, and Laurel often found himself surprised by their cleverness. One appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and tried to knock Laurel over. Fortunately he had kept his footing for the first blow, but then two of the coyotes slammed into his side. He yelped, losing his grip on the tiny pup.

Immediately he was in a frenzy, fighting off three sets of teeth. It was hard, it had always been hard to fight them. He could take one or two, but three all going at him at the same time? "Run!" he shouted, "Find your mom!!" Teeth sunk into his flank, and another onto the scruff of his neck. Laurel bucked off one, grabbing the neck of the other.

She didn't put up too much of a fight this time, the grip too tight on her scruff to allow her much to work with. Alas it seemed that wouldn't matter. Suddenly she met the earth again as the weird wolf-things attacked Laurel.

Okay, so, maybe this was as bad as it had sounded.

The girl scrambled away as her friend got beat up by the strange creatures. She had never been scared before but this...this was scary. Tears built in her eyes as she watched for a moment. She had been told to run but she felt frozen. Suddenly she was snatched up by something, the grip on her scruff uncomfortably tight. Her limbs flailed but that didn't seem to do much to whatever had grabbed her.

Suddenly she was taken off the scene and the last thing she had seen was her friend under attack.

TW: mature post — gore

The pup wasn't running. Why wasn't she running!? He hadn't expected his words to be true, but the fourth coyote finally showed up and picked up the girl. "See Jay!" he threw off the coyote and tried to make a run for her. The coyote that had grabbed her ran off, a second one running after it. Laurel tried to join in on the chase, but the remaining two 'yotes tackled him to the ground.

He was frantic now, trying to defend himself and get away. He couldn't seem to get a good hold on one, and the two canines clawed and bit, pulling out fur and drawing blood. He tried to call for the pup again, hopefully to hear her, but couldn't. She was dead, she was dead and it was his fault. He choked back a sob and squirmed away, managing to get back on his paws.

He dove for one of the coyote's necks and bit down as hard as he could, wildly shaking. Laurel didn't let go, and the coyote squirming only made him more determined to hold on. The second coyote tried to get him off, but the yearling persisted. When the coyote stopped struggling against his grip, he let go. It fell to the ground and made gurgling noises.

Now he faced the second one. Blood stung his eyes, every fresh wound stung. Lauraceae stood his ground, and eventually the coyote backed off.

His legs collapsed under him, jaws parted as he heavily panted. He couldn't tell which way they'd taken the tiny pup. Tears flowed down his cheeks as the yearling choked out his sobs. The coyote continued to gurgle, its legs twitching. Laurel sat by it as it suffered, wishing nothing but pain on the awful, evil thing. His own legs burned, and as the adrenaline ebbed away, his old pains returned to him.

Licking at the blood on his maw, Laurel watched the dying creature. His stomach growled. He had not eaten in a long time...
