It was horrendously dry in the lands of Lore and she had regretted every step she took deeper into the southern forests. But this was a personal venture. To explore more of the world beyond the coast. Find the family that her mother had lost. Find herself. Whatever. Mostly it was to stretch her legs and figure out what the heck she wanted in life. Sure, she could have remained at the great river in the north but it was so … blah. Nothing could ever compare to the beauty of the coast and it would always be there for her when, or if, she decided to return. As would her mother. But she wanted more. Life on the coast had been routine.

Scout,

fish,

repeat.

There were little threats to them now that the coastal wolves had returned to Bella Coola. Heck, they were even getting along with the bears that fished along the mighty river. She craved adventure. Purpose. Etc. etc. etc. Just something else.

She moved quickly through the trees, her long legs moving gracefully over the unfamiliar terrain. Her dark ears were cupped forward as she followed the sound of water. Finally something worth seeing. Leaving the river did not make her any less of a sea wolf. If anything it had intensified her love for water. Or need for it.

With a huff she skidded to a halt at the edge of the rapids, her cerulean gaze watching the water tumble over the unseen rocks. A content sigh escaped her as a half smile worked its way onto her weary features.

It was clear the girl didn’t see him right away. He was far enough away, resting beneath a tree. He had been there for hours, laying around. He had been sleeping at first, but now was relaxing. There was no reason for him to get up. He was not hungry, or bored- he was quite content. Company threatened that relaxation though, so he watched skeptically. He had no right to be territorial, but he was. He watched her approach the water and start drinking, but didn’t alert her of his existence. His breathing was quiet, but he knew it was only a matter of time. His scent would be on the breeze. She’d smell him even before she saw him. He sighed, then closed his eyes momentarily.

The woman didn’t seem threatening. He felt safe enough to keep his eyes closed, however vulnerable it would make him. He could hear the sound of her tongue against the water, no matter how hard he tried to ignore it. He tried to pretend he was alone, but it didn’t work. Another grunt escaped him, his eyes opening. It could have been worse. She was not an ugly sight. Her fur was similar to his, colourful and warm. She was pretty. Even far away, he could tell she was beautiful. If he had to interact with anyone, a pretty woman was the least of his worries. He sniffed, making a little more noise, then gave a little bark to notify her. “Don’t mean to scare you,” he called. “Just don’t want you thinking I’m sneaking up on ya.”

She had found a quiet spot from the river to drink from and allowed the cool water to pool around her ankles as she lowered her snout to the slow-moving surface. It was not the same was the mighty river that cut through the Great Bear Rainforest but it would do (for now). She knew that nothing in these lands would ever compare to her home on the coast but she was trying to keep an open mind. (Sort of.) Embrace the uncharted territory. (Sort of.) Be independent and whatever.

Blue was not sure what her plan was. She had no idea where she was going next but that was okay. She would find her way eventually. Maybe, if she was lucky, she would stumble upon some of her relatives. If they even stayed within the lands of Lore. The tawny Mizuno did not understand why any sea wolf would choose to make a home among all the trees. It was utterly barbaric.

Just as she had caught wind of another within her proximity a soft bark! caused her head to snap around. Her tail twitched defensively as the greyscale male spoke despite his assurance that he wasn’t sneaking up on her. Uh, she started, lamely, a single brow raised. Okay? Cool? She did not know what else to say. Her social skills were zero to none. She had better friendships with the fish (and clams) she hunted then actual wolves. You just gonna watch me then?

While her words weren’t incredibly inviting, Vaken appreciated the dry honesty. It caught him off guard, but in a good way. He gave a little huff of satisfaction, golden squinting his eyes to study her. His brown ears moved forward to hear her better and he offered a semi-smirk. It was hard to tell if her abrasiveness was rude, or an indicator of social ineptness. Maybe both? He tilted his head momentarily, reflecting on her question before giving a sharp nod. “Just might.” He had been here first, and the view wasn’t too bad. It didn’t seem like a horrible option- though it clearly wasn’t the option she wanted. He hesitated for a second, trying to assume what she did want before giving up.

He rose to his black paws, shaking the golden brown fur along his mane. The autumn was here, and so was his winter coat. It made him look even scruffier, the fur around his neck thicker. It made him look healthier too. He was bulking up, gaining fat and muscle. He was still lean, but his ribs didn’t show now. It was a good look. Slowly he made his way over, taking his time before settling by the water. He was a respectable distance from the girl, but close enough now to see the details of her features- including her sharp blue eyes. Odd. He dropped his face to the water and took a few sips, stretching out his legs. “I’m Vaken,” he introduced, swaying his tail in the breeze.

She remained where she was, cautious and observant as the greyscale youth remained where he was (for now). He did not appear to be a threat but she could not be certain. She did not know what these land wolves were like. Life had been so easy, breezy on the coast. Most of the wolves in the Bella Coola pack had kept to themselves. Tending to their roles. Perfecting their craft. The hunters were the closest out of the pack as they had needed to work together. The fishers, on the other paw, thrived individually. It was easier for them to be successful with less paws, and teeth, in the water. It was also why her social skills needed a liiittle work.

Just might. She shrugged in response and remained where she was, her cerulean gaze falling to the quick-moving water running parallel to her. It was not an ideal fishing spot, which earned a frown from the girl, but she knew if she kept following it eventually the pace of the river would slow. And the slow moving water would attract an array of fish for Blue to prey on.

A shift in movement caused her attention to return to the darker male. Oh, right. She was not alone. He approached her, slowly, but did not get too close. She shifted her weight uncomfortably but remained where she was, her tawny brows pinched tight now that she was able to get a closer look at him. Cool, she repeated, her head tilting softly to one side, I’m Blue. She seldom (almost never) gave out her full name. Her mother had nicknamed her both Blue and Del but the sea wolf preferred the former. Delora Mizuno just sounded too … prestigious. So not Blue.

She did not say anything else beyond her introduction. The seagull did not know how to engage in small talk. Or any kind of talk. She was far too awkward for social encounters.

If there was any awkwardness, Vaken didn’t notice. The social cues went over his head. Her shortness didn’t seem aggressive to the boy, so he simply sipped a bit more water and nodded. “Blue,” he repeated, his eyes narrowed as he looked over the lady. “Makes sense.” It was a comically simple name, but easy to remember. Her eyes were certainly interesting enough to leave an impressive. Vaken liked that. He took his gaze off her after a moment of contemplation, looking back at the water wistfully. He knew better than to stare, but he was intrigued by her appearance. He wanted to learn more about her, anything he could. Attempting to be subtle, he sniffed lightly at the air searching for information. He couldn’t smell anything familiar on her pelt, not any packs or other wolves. That was a good sign.

The boy would’ve been disappointed if she belonged to a pack. He hated pack wolves, and he really wanted to like this one. “New to the area?” The words came out before he could consider them. It was straight and abrupt, nosey even. He wasn’t trying to fill the silence with pointless questions. The words were genuine, his curiosity growing the better of him. “You don’t smell familiar.”

sorry for the wait! <3

The dark male did not appear bothered by her abrupt words and had not scampered off yet. Clearly she was doing something right even though she felt incredibly uncomfortable. He was not feeding off of it which meant either he had not noticed or did not care. Either way, Blue was not opposed to the temporary company despite her reluctance. Sure, she would have preferred a school of fish or collection of clams, but the dark-furred male would have to do. Until she grew bored of him.

Blue.

Made sense.

Of course it did. Her eyes were blue; therefore, her nickname was Blue. Her mother, despite adoring her daughter’s given name, had called the girl Blue once and the name had stuck to her like a barnacle. Eventually the only wolves in the pack that would refer to her as Delora were her grandparents—along with her mother when Blue was in heaps of trouble (but that was usually followed by her surname). Blue was also an easy, short introduction. Exactly what the sea-wolf preferred. Quick and to the point. No awkward small talk (like Vaken was about to engage in) and a frantic search for topics to cover. Usually she would have left by now, but the long-legged male had captured her attention for now. She did not mind amusing him for a little longer.

New to the area. She nodded softly. That should have been obvious. The smell of saltwater still clung to her fur and she wouldn’t be surprised if there was a piece, or two, of seaweed clinging to her fur somewhere. From further north, she responded coolly with an indifferent flick of her nose. Where it’s wetter. With rugged coastlines and long stretches of beach. Not this woodland bullshit. You?

OOC: it is totally okay!!! :)

He had never been farther north. He had never existed outside of the woods, the dense trees were his home. It was hard to imagine somewhere with more water than the occasional stream. He focused for a moment, imagining someplace like the mucky marshes in southern relic lore and grimaced. Horrible. The distaste showed on his face, his lips curling up and eyes narrowing.

He didn’t have too much time to reflect on it, her words breaking his thoughts. “I’ve travelled a lot,” he explained, softening his gaze. “I’ve been in the area for a few months now though. This is my home.” He had never called this forest his home, but it felt right to say it now. He had climbed the mountain before, explored caves, rocky terrain, the wheat fields- nothing was as comforting as the trees, especially here. It was dark, secluded. He was hidden, protected. He was a small, young boy that desperately clung to the camouflage the woods offered. Anything else was unsettling and dangerous for long periods of time. He smiled fondly at the memories before glancing around him. He wanted to ask more questions, to ask why she had travelled to the lore, but kept himself quiet. It wasn’t his business. He lowered his head to the water and took another few sips, contently quiet. “It’s cozy around here, kinda grows on you. Hopefully the winter isn’t too bad, but prey isn’t too scarce.” He sniffed the air as if to reinforce his point. “Pretty good set up for a lone wolf.”

A single brow raised at the male’s disgruntled expression. He did not seem to like the idea of more water, which did not surprise the girl. Most wolves weren’t fond of the ocean—not like the Bella Coola wolves. They had figured out how to benefit from the ocean and thrive off it, as well as using the resources available in the forests as well. Blue liked to think that the sea wolves were the most resourceful—living off both the sea and the land. They weren’t afraid of getting their paws wet, not like those who preferred the mountains and the woods. Clearly the ebony male had not experienced proper water.

She nodded softly as he responded to her question. It was just as vague as her response, which did not bother her. They were strangers. She did not really care about where he came from or what he had done. She was just trying to make small talk to appease him. Make the time go by quicker. Bore him enough so he would dismiss himself.

But she was intrigued that the male had decided this place was his home. What had made him come to that conclusion? This place was not anything special; rather lacklustre compared to the Great Bear Rainforest. But somehow it had convinced the lanky male to stay. How?

She did know if she cared enough to ask.

Pretty good set up for a lone wolf. She nodded again. You prefer that? She asked with genuine curiosity, her chin tilting softly to the side as she examined him. The scent of others was missing from his pelt. In its place was the scent of the woods surrounding them. A true lone wolf.
