He had considered continuing north after his visit to the kingswood, but something had told the Captain that he wasn’t quite done with is visit to Relic Lore just yet. Having learned long ago to trust his instinct and always being happiest when following his whims, the pale wolf had turned back south, circling the shore of the great lake this time, rather than going straight across. This route led him towards the foothills of Mount Dire, and eventually to the lands where his father’s pack had briefly settled after Hearthwood – where a river of meltwater cascaded from the heights to meet the lake.

Kyrios had never lived here himself, but he had visited a few times on his journeys before Lachesis and Lilya had decided to move to new lands. It was a nice place, one where a young pirate could have happily found plenty of adventure, but unfortunately, he had long outgrown pack life by that time. Still, he chose to stay for a while now, exploring among the driftwood and enjoying the lazy bubble of the tributary, calming from the spring floods.

As of lately, days and nights had seemed to blur together making the passage of time seem almost indiscernible. Absent of any other direction to go, or any place to be, the wanderer had continued heading north, operating purely on instinct and personal curiosity. She had been to many places, seen many things - oftentimes with some reason or goal in mind to accomplish, but north was never a direction she’d chosen to venture in purely for the sake of it.

The nomad had spent all of yesterday and most of this morning circling an expansive lake, complete with what appeared to be several small islands in the middle of it. At first, she hadn’t paid them much mind, content to continue walking. But by the second day, the prospect of swimming across to see what was on them had enticed her enough that she’d finally paused, turning out to look at them. To even attempt such a thing went against her better judgment, but absent any clear-cut purpose or destination, the temptation grew.

Lingering upon the rocky shore of the lake, Katiya sank her paws into the water, testing it. It was cold, though not what she would deem as dangerously so. She blew out a contemplative breath, one question lingering in her mind. Continue around, or swim across?

He was sniffing around the old den site, when the stiff gale off the lake brought a more enticing scent to his curious nose: That of another wolf, alive and fresh. The Captain set off down the hillside towards the lake at a brisk pace. As soon as he cleared the trees, he spotted the woman, standing with her paws in the lapping water, looking intently out over the waves.

She was a chunk larger than him, with a burly build and dense, dark coat. If he were to guess, he’d say she was around his age, maybe a little younger, but certainly no unseasoned youngster. Striking up a smile, Kyrios approached her along the coast, his movements open and earnest, tail waving pleasantly behind him. “It ain’t fer th’ faint o’ heart, but it can be done!” He announced, gesturing out over the water; “Th’ water’s surprisin’ly cold this time a’ year tho’, from th’ snowmelt.” Looking back at the swarthy woman, he gave her a quick once over, winking cheekily; “Bu’ A’ bet a lass like ye’ can handle th’ challenge.”

Katiya heard the approach of another before scenting him and promptly turned to face the approaching man, for the breeze coming off the lake did her no favors in that regard. She wasn’t sure where the other had come from or how far he’d tracked her, but he carried himself at a swift pace, affording her the ability to track his steps. His stride was confident, but his posture affable. He was lighter in color and a bit shorter than her, but his build was robust and well defined, suggesting perhaps an extra attentiveness to health and fitness. He was.. possibly a tad older, as well, though was harder to tell with older wolves, sometimes. The nomad could clearly see this was no inexperienced yearling or young adult, though.

The accent with which he spoke was most intriguing, and slightly charming, in an odd sort of way. The wanderer was accustomed to encountering different accents or manners of speech, and it was perhaps one of the more entertaining aspects of meeting others from different regions. She wondered if this was a common way of speaking in the area. The man’s words were equally intriguing and informative, with.. perhaps a bit of encouragement, or flattery, tacked on at the end.

Katiya flashed him a smile and a nod, tail waving loosely. ”I’m not too concerned with handling the swim. More worried about the.. practicality of such an undertaking. Justifying it.” The temperature of the water was potentially a concern. The energy expenditure involved in such an undertaking was something to be considered carefully. In the height of summer, there would’ve been far less doubt in her mind. But right now, Katiya wasn’t quite sure she could justify the swim, no matter how fun it sounded.

She cast a contemplative look back to the islands, but returned her focus to the other after a few more moments. ”That is all good to know, though. Thank you kindly, sir. Am I correct to assume you speak from experience?”

Her smile was delightful, the sway of her tail inspiring the Captain’s own to wave wider. He took a seat on the shore, a polite distance away, smiling jovially back as he listened to her dilemma. To the pale daredevil, it all seemed rather straight forward – never one to waste time looking for logical reason, he would simply follow the whim as soon as it hit him. And as the tawny woman looked wistfully out over the lake, he voiced as much: “Wha’s t’ justify? Ye think ye got th’ mettle, have at it!”

The politesse of her thanks made him chuckle a little, though he nodded his head affably; “Aye, I’ve tickled this particular beast a few times.” He wiggled his brows, smiling crookedly as he continued; “An’ ‘tis Kyrios, Kyrios Aegina Stark, t’ be proper, bu’ Ky will do jus’ fine.” At that, he swept her a gallant bow, slightly hampered by his seated position, yet he managed to make it look smooth all the same; It was hardly his first time.

The other maintained a jovial expression, sitting back once he’d closed the distance between them to something more respectable for conversation. He took care not to venture too close, however, a particular attentiveness to courtesy that did not go unnoticed. He did not seem to share in her reservations, though, urging her simply to go for it if she felt capable. Katiya tipped her head slightly, finding a certain amount of respect for that mindset.

”The expenditure of energy,” the rational portion of her mind urged her to speak. To be able to do things simply because one wanted to was contrary to the way she’d lived until now. But absent any purpose as of recent, perhaps there would be time for that, now. Katiya cast another sidelong glance towards the islands, though her attention remained mostly on the other as he claimed to have taken on the swim a few times. Was that modesty, there?

”Only a few? Do you reside around these parts, then?” The nomad questioned, humored by the expressions of this male, but also genuinely curious to see what she might learn. Introductions, of course, though, were the next order of business to attend to, and the man did not hesitate to divulge his. A rather gracious and noble bow accompanied the introduction, performed in one fluid, seemingly practiced motion, suggesting it was not an atypical greeting.

”A name befitting a gentleman. Katiya Zakkai, but you may call me Kat, if you like. A pleasure to make your acquaintance,” the wanderer offered, providing a small nod of her own. After an extended period of travel, Katiya found it was quite nice to converse again. Even more so with someone as congenial as this man seemed to be.

“Ah,” he nodded at her explanation, a hint of a sigh in his voice. He’d met other wolves with that same mindset in his travels, but it always saddened him a little, such a cynical approach to life. He wouldn’t judge though, different wolves just worked differently, there was no shame in that. But he saw that longing in her glances out at the islands, so carefully restrained, yet there it was, the desire to break free.

Her question brought the attention back on the Captain himself and he grinned a little sheepishly, mentally scolding himself for reading too deeply when he barely even knew the lass. Instead he inclined his head at her introduction, showing clear flattery at her words. “Pleasure’s all mine Kat,” he hummed, flashing her another easy grin; “An’ A’ used to. Was borne in th’ woods on th’ other side.” He motioned out over the water, though the distance was much to great to see even the towering sequoias of Kingsfall. “’s’ been a lifetime tho,” he shook his head, looking back at the tawny woman; “’n’ ye? Jus’ trav’lin’ through?”

The other nodded, understanding her hesitancy to attempt such a swim. A short response was issued, and though she was fairly certain the other did not share her reservations, there was no attempt to debate the point. He let it be at that, which was.. again, rather courteous. Katiya decided if she were still here come the warmer months, though, she would have to go for it.

Resisting the temptation to look again, when doing so would be quite impolite, the nomad sat back to direct her attention toward the other. He was smiling again, an expression that was contagious and impossible not to mirror. Kyrios confirmed he had been raised in an area just across the lake, to the north. It’d been a lifetime, he said, almost wistfully. A myriad of questions sprang to mind at that, though most of them would go unspoken. ”Oh, yeah? That’s.. actually almost the direction I was heading.” Katiya spoke, now more curious about what might await across the lake. Did the other have family, there?

It was his turn to pose an inquiry, though, one that prompted a contemplative breath to escape the wanderer. ”Ah, probably. Was raised in a group of nomads, focused on exploring and knowledge seeking. So traveling is in my nature, I guess.” Kat offered with a slight roll of her shoulders. It’d been an unusual and intriguing lifestyle, but there were still things it left to be desired. ”Depends on what I find, though,” the wanderer added, unable to speak with absolute certainty.

The tawny woman’s smile made the pirate’s own grow a little wider, his tail swaying freely behind him as he admired how her face lit up. It was always such a pleasure to meet other wolves who took so casually to new interactions. Far too many were prone to hostility, especially when they were defending a territory or feared they might have encroached on his. But Kat took it all in stride and it made the conversation flow much freer.

His brows flicked up at her response, lips parting in a silent laugh at the coincidence. “Is worth th’ trip,” he supplied; “’n all me’ travels ‘ave never seen n’other place quite like Kingsfall.” Which was true, though he had seen many other wonders, the giant redwood trees of his homeland were still unique. He almost felt sorry he’d already been by, as he would have liked showing it to the wolfess, who seemed so keen on exploring new lands.

She confirmed as much with her answer to his question, yet another delightful surprise. Though her approach might be a bit different, it would still seem that the Captain had met a kindred spirit, as eager for knowledge as he was for adventure. Her final addition made his muzzle crinkle with amusement, head tilting ever so slightly. He stayed like that, just watching her for a moment, wondering what exactly might be enough to settle her traveler’s spirit; Something truly special, certainly.

Finally, he said: “Well these lands have enough int’restin’ nooks to explore if ye do stick ‘round. Used t’ be teeming with wolves too, but most seem t’ve vanished as of late.” It was still surprising to him even after several visits. Relic Lore was lush with plants and prey, with no evidence that anything should have happened to drive off the many wolf packs who used to call it home. And yet, there was nothing left but empty dens.

The other was not particularly forthcoming with details as to what exactly she’d find, north of the lake. It was worth the trip was all Ky offered, claiming there was a uniqueness to it that hadn’t been replicated anywhere else he’d traveled. ”Now you’ve got me curious, I’ll have to see what’s there. But don’t tell me any more-” the nomad spoke with a wry grin. Kat couldn’t quite imagine what might be out there that she hadn’t seen before, but that anticipation was part of the fun.

It was indisputable, though, that the man was fond of the place - and Katiya was inclined to take him and his words for truth. This meeting was almost like a literal breath of fresh air. With his manners and pleasant, easygoing demeanor and conversation, Kyrios had provided a nice little break from days of wandering in relative silence.

There was another bit of insight offered though, that was a bit troubling. ”I had noticed that our kind are scarce, they have been for a while. Thought maybe I wasn’t looking in the right places. That’s.. good to know, though.” A small frown crossed the wanderer’s countenance, briefly wondering what might’ve caused the exit of so many wolves. But at least there were places to stay, if she opted linger somewhere for a time.

”Are there any other areas you’d suggest I see, along the way?” That was a question the wanderer supposed she could ask, though, without spoiling whatever awaited to the north. It would certainly be useful to know whether she should set an unwavering course from here on until she’d circled the lake, or if there were stops worth making along the way.
