Skittles

He hadn't ever gotten to know Mim very well, she simply wouldn't let him. In fact, she'd said very few words to him, most of which were along the lines of "get out" or "food". But he couldn't help but feel like an old soul who in some distant other life had been tenderly connected to her. When he fell in a ditch, got lost, and stayed here, he never expected that Mim would decide to die. But she did, and when he returned his pack had long since moved on, him no longer a part of it. He couldn't count numbers but if they did, the number of mornings, noons, and nights that he'd spent sitting patiently at her grave would be immense. At first, he felt like he was waiting. That if he cried hard enough and waited long enough, she would come back, somehow, and tell him that she really did love him and didn't mean all of those "get away"s that she had said. But time debunked that plan and at last, he pulled himself away from her grave and left the lands altogether.

But what if he didn't try hard enough? He remembered a story from his puppyhood about a lonely girl who liked to hang out at seedy ponds full of trouble and undesirable creatures. At any rate, she took up a fetish for frogs and began to kiss them all, many, many frogs, until one day something special happened - it turned into a prince, a bachelor male who treated her right and told her all the things that she wanted to hear and they weren't lonely anymore and went off and made thousands of babies. Just like that girl, he too was single, and he felt that he deserved the occurrence just as much as the story-tale character did.

Before the crack of dawn, Skittles set to work with his plan, creating a very deep hole with very steep sides, so much so that he was even afraid of falling in. Next to it, he created another hole much the same, and nearly did fall in this time, but managed to weasel his way out by tearing up the side and then extending that side so that the sides were steep again. When the sun began to rise, he began the next phase of his carefully worked out plan, thinking to himself how clever he was, and how much everyone seemed to take that for granted just because he opted not to talk about silly things, shout mean things, and have a motto that included happiness instead of greed. At the edges of the lake, the sea creatures always seemed to team together, and this morning was no exception. Within an hour, he'd caught ten frogs and deposited each, one by one, into the first whole. As noon approached, he noticed that the frogs in the whole didn't seem to happy or as slimy, so he began carrying mouthfuls of lake water. It was thoroughly disgusting, even for him, but still he continued.

At last, he settled in front of his frogs. Using his paw, he tried to line them up into an orderly fashion. They weren't too keen on moving but the final verdict was that his whole simply wasn't long enough. After a moment of thought, he decided to use some things that his mother had taught him called multiplication. He never really understood the concept of numbers or math, but he remembered how she lined everything up as if there were invisible lines and each 'thing' was in the middle of each square made by the grid-lines. It seemed simple enough in his mind, but once more, the frogs weren't too happy about being pushed around. One even slapped his paw with his tongue.

Skittles gave a sigh and at last managed to fish one out and hold it down by it's legs. Lowering his head, he inched towards the frog and at last let his tongue droll out and give a long lick across the thing's back. The frog didn't change but Skittles' expression did, his eyes wincing and his mouth puckering in an awkward facial cringe. Using his paws again, he shuffled the frog into the empty hole. If he let it get away, he might catch it again and that would be an extra lick.
