When his paws were finally clean, he lay on his rock waiting for the Healer and becoming a bit impatient. If she didn't come back soon, he would have to leave and return to his duties, for he was not a wolf to lay idle when there was work to do. As a loner, one was always busy with the task of survival. As a pack wolf, survival was made easier, but the trade off was that a wolf hunted for many or protected many as he did. Every moment he spent away from his borders was time from his duty. His duty gave him purpose.

Just when he was thinking that she'd gone and left him hanging he saw her small form returning with a mouthful of odd-smelling plants. The look on her face when she put them down was not an encouraging one in the least. She evaluated his cleaning job, seeming satisfied. Then she looked at the herbs that she had brought and shoves some his way, insisting that he eat them to dull the pain. He was torn. This was a wolf that he did not know and instinctively he knew that ingesting something was completely different from some poultice that might be applied. Staring into her eyes for a moment, he decided to take an unheard of leap of faith and trust this tiny female. At least for the moment.

He took the plant into his mouth and chewed with a strange expression on his bi-colored face. He was accustomed to eating warm raw flesh, not bitter plants and it felt all wrong, but he dutifully chewed and swallowed the distasteful mess. While he had been chewing, she had as well and now she wished to apply the green foamy looking stuff to his paws. The part he didn't like was that she asked him to lay on his side so that she might apply it. Unfortunately, that would expose his vulnerable belly to her and all of his survival instincts roared at the thought.

Fighting his instincts, he did as she asked, yet his head remained lifted and his stormy eyes watched her every move, while his lips lifted slightly, baring the tips of his fangs in warning. If she tried anything, he'd be on her with no mercy. He had been raised to trust no one and that edict had kept him alive so far. However, he gradually covered his white teeth as she carefully applied the stuff to his paws. They stung slightly at first and then the concoction seemed to sooth the burning in his abused pads. Giving her a grudging nod, he said. "They feel better." in his typical deep rumbling tone.
