Calla Lyall
Calla had decided that she enjoyed the snow. At first, she had been a little anxious about it. It was cold, made her paws sting a bit and it had changed the way everything had looked. She had watched until her parents had ventured out first and saw it caused them no harm before she took her first tentative steps- now, she couldn't get enough of the cold, soft blanket that covered her home. It didn't feel so cold now, it didn't feel so scary and you could have so much fun with it too!

She had found a fun game to play with it, which didn't involved running as fast as she could towards the ledge of the rocks and throwing herself into the padded drift below, though that was pretty fun, tiring, but fun. No, she had learnt that the stuff bound together and she had spent the last half an hour or so, rolling a ball of snow across the rest of the snow with her nose. Each time she rolled it, it made a funny crunching noise and grew bigger and bigger, until at last it was about the side of her and a little too heavy to carry on pushing.

The ball of snow looked a little barren at first, but as she sat there looking at it, she realized it looked a little like a face and that, was pretty cool. All it needed was some eyes, a shiny black nose and maybe she could use sticks for ears and it would look a little like her mother, then she could give it to her as a surprise and she could keep it forever, for she did not know that the snow would be gone by the spring. "Hmm. Two eyes. One nose... that's... erm... three rocks. And then I will need two ears." she muttered to herself with her warm, friendly tones as she sat facing the blank canvas of a snowball, her head tilted, her tail coiled neatly around her paws as she studied the cluster she had made. "Ok, that sounds good. Now, if I were a small blue rock, where would I hide." she continued, talking to herself for she was normally left behind by her siblings and had found her own company more interesting if it wasn't all in her head.
She tried to picture her mother's face, her beautiful mismatched eyes were blue as the water and golden as the sun. She would have to look especially hard if she was going to find some stones that would be just right, and they would have to be perfect, nothing else would do short of perfection for her and her mother.

With the colours set in her mind, she stood, shook the snow from her rear from where it had been painted to the floor, and set off towards the rocks again, hoping to find something that she could use for her masterpiece. Her nose to the floor, she pawed at the rocks where they met the floor, pushing aside the snow to reveal the pebbles and stones which were hidden beneath the white blanket. Looking down at the first cluster she had uncovered, only to find icky brown and grey rocks, she feared that this might be a long day.

you do not know who is your friend
or who is your enemy
until the ICE breaks.
Snow — it was white, it was cool, it was soft.. and silent. It carried a certain sleepiness with it, a stillness he had never been able to find anywhere else. In spring, the world was full of life, full of awakening animals and their sounds, accompanied by the ever-present chirp of birds. And in summer, the world was warm and lazy, flies buzzing and the undergrowth always rustling, moved by one animal or another. In fall, storms howled and rains poured down, and brittle, frosted leaves broke underfoot, adding to the sounds.

But in winter, all was silent, all was still. Few birds remained, and they did not sing throughout the day. The whuffle of an animal moving carried far, but when no one was in the vicinity, it was only him and the silent snow, muting all other noise. Ice loved his pack, he knew that beyond a doubt, but more and more did a deep restlessness drive him to move away from the territory, into the world beyond, to find the peace he could not find there. Rissa lay in an unmarked grave and despite their attempts to move on, each time he saw the face of a pack mate he was reminded of it. Each time he saw the river, he remembered the peal of her laughter. It was such a shame, that she would never reach adult age, that she would never take a mate of her own, know of love (who was he to speak of such a thing), or raise children of her own...

Far and wide his treacherous paws carried him in his quest for peace. He passed out of the Sacred Grove with its ancient, majestic trees onto the small meadow, the willows a thick, snow-clad line on the pale horizon. And eventually, trees towered all around him again, the massive cedars which protected Borden's and Angier's pack. Sunk deep in wordless thoughts he did not really know where he was going, nor did he care. When his thoughts chased themselves endlessly, he needed physical movement to help straighten them out.

Sights, sounds and scents pulled him from his reverie, and the huge, pale wolf blinked his silver eyes. A few large rocks, lots of broken snow, a ball of snow (most curious), and.. yes, that was a wolf. It seemed quite small, smelled of female and the cedarwood pack, and from her general lankiness he assumed it was one of the cubs.. but he did not dare cement the opinion in his mind. Instead, he gave a low woof to let her know he was there, some twenty yards away. Behind him, his tail was swaying softly in a sign of peace, and his face was merely open and curious.

He was tired of confusion and doubt.

"Ok... I have one black stone for her nose... and that is it. Ergh." muttered her girlish tones as she looked down at the single black pebble, round and with a glittering surface thanks to the water from the snow. It was the perfect shape for her ball of snow to be her mothers nose, but she had no luck yet in trying to find a blue or a golden stone. It appeared her mothers eyes weren't such a natural occurance in nature as she might have first thought. It would be better if it was spring, there would be flowers all around her then and she was certain she could find a blue flower in the spring to crush and use as her mothers eye; yellow buttercups perhaps for the other, but she really didn't want to wait that long to give the gift to her mother, she wanted it finished today for she might be a perfectionist, but she was a very impatient one.

She was sitting with her back to the stranger as he approached, looking down to the perfect stone with a mixture of appreciation for finding at least one decent stone, but irritation at not finding anymore yet. So engrossed was she that as the other so kindly let her know of his presence, she still jumped and went from sitting to standing within a millisecond with her head over her shoulder, her heart thumping against her chest as her honey eyes landed on a very large, somewhat strong looking wolf.
She had never seen him before, but she didn't really see anyone. She tried to quickly think what her mother would do in this situation and allowed her nose to quiver, trying to find his scent upon the air only to discover he was not marked with the smell of cedar but something more... watery? Weird. He certainly wasn't around here, but by the way he peacefully held himself and wagged his tail, she didn't feel afraid of him. She'd never really had to be afraid, of anything, so it wasn't a feeling she could pinpoint if she tried.

She offered him a brilliant smile, flashing her perfectly white teeth as she turned herself to face him, so they were face on now. Her tail wagged behind her in the same peaceful greeting as she looked him over. "Hello. she said, her voice a little shy but she tried to be bold and confident like her mother would be when speaking.
She didn't like the idea of silence to follow, so she quickly added to her greeting. "Are you lost?" Well, he didn't smell like he was in the right place, maybe she could point him in the right direction... not that she really knew of anything outside of the forest and these rocks that she had discovered the morning, but it was only polite to try. "Erm, maybe I can give you some directions?" she added as she took a tentative step or two forwards in his direction, keeping her polite, cheerful smile in place. Her charm and good nature oozing from her in every possible way, for she was a good girl with a heart of gold, yet untainted by the troubles of life. "I'm Calla." she added and fell silent, hoping for an answer from the very large stranger who made her feel all of an inch tall.

Ice Aesir
you do not know who is your friend
or who is your enemy
until the ICE breaks.
He'd tried to avoid exactly that which happened. With mild amusement he watched the girl shoot up as if she'd sat on wasp, but she didn't seem scared. Just.. startled. A low, deep chuckle rumbled in his chest at the sight, and with his head level with his spine he took a few steps closer — he was too heavy to balance perfectly upon the hard, frozen crust, each step his paws sunk a few inches. It made him awkward at times, and slow, but for now that was no problem. The brittle snow broke beneath his weight but he was so used to it, merely waited for the plunge downward to stop before shifting fully and taking another step. "Hey there," he responded warmly, but his heart knew a brief moment of doubt. She was vulnerable, so very vulnerable, out here alone... so trusting of a friendly smile and the wag of a tail. A bright smile on her youthful face, her golden eyes glued on him with nothing but kindness, such joy.. simple joy... this Calla.

His smile turned sadder, though no less open, and he slowly averted his gaze to the forest around them. His heart, which had first beaten with troubles and then with the emptiness of a mind-numbing walk, beat with pain now, something soft, yet it throbbed with such an intensity he feared it would actually break. How could they live with this..?

"If I am not going anywhere in particular, I cannot be lost, now, can I?" he asked her gently, turning his gaze back to her face. She was a slender thing, covered in a soft, creamy fur, her eyes honey gold — his mind painted a few darker patches on her fur, and some more muscle on her limbs, and the breath stuck in his throat. He blinked his eyes rapidly, knowing he ought to respond to her greeting, give his own name in return, and while one quarter was stuck thinking that, another quarter was full of pain, and the rest of him wondering when on earth he had learned social etiquette. Drawing a few shaking breaths he tried to soothe the pain in his heart, but it was like every little bit of loss and heartache came back, stronger than it had ever been before. Since the moment Aiyana had returned to alone, he had known that they would not see Rissa alive again — he'd seen her body and taken farewell of her flesh, and he had known that she would never live again, but some part of him had not understood what it meant until now. Until he met Calla, who radiated the same exuberant joy, the same youthful naivety. If he sweet-talked her a little and said please, come, could he lure her across the mountains and kill her? Would she follow, be able to fall prey to the vile whims of those horrid wolves?

"I'm sorry," he whispered, unable to muster something stronger of voice. It still felt as if the knowledge that he would never see Rissa's smile again was lying across his throat, choking him. "I'm.. I'm Ice. And y-you.. you just.. remind me of someone I.. I used to know..." He blinked the wetness away, lashes batting rapidly as he forced to keep the tears back. Oh, Rissa... their little Rissa. The desire to run up to Calla and hold her close was overwhelming, but he locked his jaws together and remained in place. Calla was not Rissa. Calla was someone else's daughter... but she was everything Rissa had been, and would've been, and it woke every memory of her. Their summer had been too short.

How carefully he had watched the young girl. How long he had waited for just the right moment to strike...but it would seem today would not be his day. He bit back the growl of frustration that wished to rip from his chest as a stranger approached, and quickly he had concealed himself, comfortable in the fact he had been neither close enough to leave his larger prints next to one so young and that she had not caught sight of him, yet. He would need to stay concealed until the timing was perfect, until he was certain nobody was around... He had almost blown it all.

She was perfect. Softer than the last with a voice that sounded as if it were constantly singing. Her coat was pure and her eyes shone bright. He was certain that she would be the one to sate Unelanuhi, long enough to cure Slimtail anyway. Long enough for Aniwaya to be free of the curse that had taken Blackcrow from them... He kept telling himself it had little to do with the fact that hearing her beautiful voice raised to the pitch of pained screams would be music to his ears, and little to do with the fact that he thirsted more for the blood of the innocent than water... No. It was all for Unelanuhi. Now that now the memory of the other was fading he was struggling to sleep at night... but that was the Great Spirit speaking to him, willing him to do it’s bidding. This wasn’t personal, no... It was all to save Slimtail. He had to save Aniwaya from ruin.

His lips drew back from his fangs as the scent of the interloper came to him. He smelled of her... and he struggled to hold himself in place. He wanted to bury his nose in the strangers coat and loose himself in the smell, in the memory of her final moments... but it would not serve him well to get his throat ripped out now, would it? There was still so much to be done...

But he couldn’t simply pull away as he had before. No. He had to stay, to see if any of the anguish was reflected in those silver eyes of his. Ears cupped forwards as the little one began to speak and a satisfied smirk painted itself to his face, Calla... he committed the name to memory. No doubt familiarity would be his friend if all was to go to plan. Concealed amongst the underbrush as he was, he was far from safe, but at least for now the wind was on his side and he dared to linger for a moment longer.

And there it was. That sad, sad smile. He could have cried out with the joy it bought him were he not in such a precarious position. No. This, he would tuck away for later, when he truly was safe and alone. He was about to tear himself away when the show turned in his favour yet again. His heart hammered in his chest as he all but watched the cogs turn in the larger males head. Drawing the comparisons. Yes, she was perfect. And for more reasons than one... He knew it too... oh and the words! This had to be a dream... it was simply too sweet to be a reality...

And then... were those tears?

It was too much for the dark male to contain. He shook with the intensity of it all. It was all too perfect. He had to leave before he gave himself away, there was only so much glee the dark wolf could contain at any one moment.

This wasn’t the first time he was happy to have speed on his side. As quietly as he could, the dark wolf slunk away to be somewhere more alone.

Jaysyek Enap Lyall

The mad fox had Jaysyek in distress. This was not normal, and nor was it a quick killing disease. It made it's victims mad, uncontrollable, and it was here. Borden had had a talk with the children, but Jaysyek wasn't convinced it would keep them safe. What would? They had knowledge, but would they go looking for these animals?

Paws dipped through the white, she had been happy to find Renier,Ryvet, and Taima were going on a hunt in the forest. Today that left what Calla was up to. Her small daughter, the most innocent and sweet of the group. Where was she on this warm, winter day? Renier had mumbled something about the creek, and Jayse had to try hard not to let her tongue give off a scolding they were not with her. So, instead she encouraged them to be safe, and return before dark. Adding of coarse, the importance of coming quicker if there were signs of danger. Away they had went, and Jayse departed to the familiar rocks with anxiety pulsing through her body.

Jaysyek could swear when she became closer with the trickling creek as her guide she could smell someone. Her paws began to pound harder, "Calla?" Her voice would call out, empty of the fear that held her own heart. "Calla?" She called again with a more loud tone to reach the young ears. Jayse climbed up the small hill, but she would not see any dark stranger leave. She would see the large, shaded figure beside her daughter. Ears drawn back, her mouth open, teeth shown with want of blood, her tail widly twitched behind her. She was a second from attacking, when the wolf's scent...River scent would flood her nostrils. It did not ease her mind. She did not know this wolf. Light hair bristled, she would hide her teeth, but everything remained on display. "Can I help you?" The words would pull slowly from her throat as if made of sharp rocks, because they were not meant. They were the only thing she dared let pass her lips in front of her daughter. There was no need to alarm her, and rip into him...not yet. She only hoped the male knew it was only because of his pack she did not unleash much more.

She had to think about his reply for a moment, before ultimatly deciding he was right, you really couldn't get lost if you didn't have a destination in mind- that would be silly, how could you lose something you never really had. She smiled in reply and nodded at his logic, it made perfect sense. She liked him, she decided that quickly. It didn't take her much to judge another's character; she seemed to see through them, though her innocence and naivety had caused her yet to meet anyone who wasn't truly nice to her, she still seemed to know that deep down this fluffy wolf wasn't anyone to fear- yet at least. That was, until his entire body seemed to almost sag and deflate- something wasn't right, for a moment she felt her breath hitch in her chest as she studied the wolf slip from friendly and bold to a little lost, perhaps even saddened. She felt her heart lurch- no one should be sad, ever.
She said nothing, allowed the stranger to compose himself before he went on to apologise to her. He didn't need to of course, but she would just let the moment pass without dwelling on it. She felt dwelling on sad thoughts only made you less happy, not more, and she was happy. She had her little tantrums, what princess didn't, but she never felt unhappy, even when she was left behind by her siblings, or when she got dirty, when her mother fussed and her father watched her constantly, she never felt unhappy. "Well Ice, it's lovely to meet you." she replied with a kind smile and a warm voice, trying her hardest to pick the mood back up with how she stood so eagerly, kindly with her friendly wagging tail causing a light breeze around her legs. She would have asked as to whom he was referring, she hoped dearly it was someone nice and worthwhile, but the thought of whoever it was seemed to have tugged on his mood and she thought perhaps she shouldn't dwell too much on the subject.

She had parted her lips ready to speak, to change the conversation to another direction but her thoughts where distrupted as a strange scent crossed her nose. Her nose wrinkled of its own accord as she took in the flavour, it didn't smell much of the forest, more of the open skies, perhaps a little dirty too and there was something upon the wind, almost like it was tainted, and she felt her hackles bristle in a shiver. Whatever, no, whoever it was gave her the creeps. It wasn't a strong smell, but it was certainly one that she noticed without any trouble and it sent her inner alarm off. "Do you... Do you smell that, Ice?" she asked the stranger, and found herself without realising taking a few steps towards the other as if he would protect her- not that she expected any sort of treatment and she was sure she could handle herself, whatever it was, but like Ryvet she might talk the talk but walking the walk was still a bit out of her comfort zone.

The scent vanished as quickly as it had come and was replaced by another, more familiar scent. Uh oh... mother was coming. She wasn't afraid of her mother, no, she loved her dearly with every inch of her heart and soul, but that didn't mean she wanted to get grounded and she knew she would, she had ventured a little too far today and ignored her father's warning to stay close. It appeared that crazy foxes weren't enough to keep her den-bound. "I'm here, Mother!" she called to the forest where her nose was telling her the white wolf was searching for her. It wasn't but a moment later that her beautiful, graceful mother appeared, looking ever the queen that she was but her appearance changed just as quickly, taking on a fierce, protective facade instead and she felt herself shrink down a little. She hated her mother looking so very angry. "Mother, this is Ice." she piped up quietly but did not let her eyes meet those of her mothers or of the stranger, instead she looked over to the snowball she had been fashioning and felt a little deflated that she would not be able to finish the gift.

This post is a bit messed up, sorry!

you do not know who is your friend
or who is your enemy
until the ICE breaks.
He kept his eyes someplace else, not sure he could bear to watch her, to see the likeness to the near-daughter he had lost. The yawning gap in his chest which should've contained his heart stretched wider, a void of darkness, and briefly he wondered if he could drown from the inside out. It certainly felt like he was about to. Her voice bridged the gap between them again and he mustered a small smile, for her, and for Rissa. Rissa had ever been happy. She would not have wanted them to be sad all the time. Clinging to that he tried to swallow the tears, and batted his lashes to blink it all away. As if it was that easy. His tail kept swaying, though at a more solemn pace than hers. Trying to swallow all the sorrow he looked upon her again, trying to see the child that stood there, and not the one that didn't, but his heart just kept seeing Rissa. "It's lovely to meet you too," he whispered, knowing his voice couldn't carry without cracking. Whispering was easier. Whispering was just shaping a breath to hold meaning, words. It's lovely to know not all in this world has fallen into darkness. He remembered the look on Borden's face as truth had sunk in: it could've been my child they had killed. Swift River had only Aiyana left to protect, Borden had many more. He had lost, last year. Would his luck turn? For his sake, and for the sake of Calla, Ice hoped so, fiercely, that he would not lose any of his children. Would such a loss be able to turn even this bright girl into such a closed, caged shadow as Aiyana had become these days?

That thought hurt too; it was hard enough to see the always-quiet Aiyana turn even quieter and colder.. He did not want the world to be robbed of its innocence and light.

But danger lurked everywhere. A tear-shivering breath, a familiar scent in his mind, and in a heartbeat the sorrowful Ice went from dejected to furiously alert. He didn't see Calla take a few steps closer, barely heard her question; all he could feel was the scent burning in his mind, in his soul, the anger pumping through his veins and the thrumming of his heart. Not even the smell of more cedar approaching, the female voices mingling, pushed through as he lurched into motion. With his eyes ablaze and fangs bared Ice found the spot where Slyscar had kept watch. The prints in the snow and the fading smell and heat of his body was like injecting rage straight into his veins, and Ice bolted a few more yards through the snow. He saw nothing but a lonely trail looping east, had nothing but the fading, dying smell and the knowledge that he was far too slow to catch up with anyone. From his throat a feral roar of a howl sprung up, rumbling in his chest like thunder and carrying the promise of blood. "COME BACK YOU BASTARD AND LET ME KILL YOU! COME BACK, COWARD! I WILL FIND YOU!", was the message, the wordless scream the frustration of a pained soul. Neither his grief nor frustration had found an outlet, and at the moment, sinking his fangs into the bastard who smelled of Rissa's corpse would be no greater relief. Shaking with his fury Ice kept staring into the snowy forest, but of course, no demon came back to lay his head down for execution. Drawing in deep mouthfuls of cool air he tried to clear his head, but he couldn't stop the quivering in his body. Adrenaline bled out of him with every heartbeat, leaving him light and shaken. With his lips concealing his fangs and his stiff tail drooping he slowly turned, to see Calla standing beside what his detached mind told him was her mother. He wasn't quite sure how he knew it, but some part of him told him it was true.

She looked much like her daughter, perhaps a tad more pristine in her shade, and as his silver gaze swept once across her face he saw that her eyes had different colors. Odd. "I am not going to hurt either of you," he called out, tiredly, to them. He felt older than his years, as if mourning aged him and dragged his spirit down. "But this one will. Come here and learn his scent, and don't ever trust it." It would be their best protection: to know who they were afraid of, for young Calla to have a tangible memory, knowledge, of the enemy. And, some part of him told him it was rude to command strangers, but he was too shaken to care, or even notice. He just wanted to protect them. To keep Calla safe. "They murdered our child," he mouthed at the snow, lowering his gaze again.

He would not let them take another.

it's okay fenrir <3 sorry for the wait.

Hear her little voice, her heart only beat faster, her steps quicker. Losing a child just never left you the same. Calla had already scared her enough. It was very hard not to hurry when she heard the wild noise of pain, and anger. Jaysyek stood close to her daughter, not taking her eyes off the silver male. Borden had said one of their cubs had been taken, she knew he was not Indru, could not be the father...unless. She didn't know, but the pain was there, it was real. Maybe, she shouldn't worry about him. Yet, Jaysyek was paranoid enough to worry, enough to be suspicious why he was here. When he opened his mouth, wary words falling she knew what he said was true. She felt the hold of her heart no more, and her eyes softened. Jaysyek swiftly nodded her crown, and nudged Calla to do as he said. She waited for her daughter first, then put her nose to let it burn to her own mind. She would not forget the smell of fern, rocks, and death. The leader rose her head in a curious tilt, trying to hide her own shock and pain to his murmured words. Jaysyek couldn't think about it without things beginning to swell and hurt by her own memories of lost, the worry of it still happening. Just..the ache from knowing the terrible fate of an innocent soul. Like Prosper... They had found him...Jayse's ears flicked back, and she straightened up."Thank you," she quietly said back, still feeling a bit hit by all this saddening, and maddening events. Spring was not far off, but she wouldn't feel any happiness it was suppose to bring.

"Calla, remind me to get your siblings to take this in. These wolves are not friends." Jaysyek tried not to be so cold, and hard. It was the protective shell she wanted to wear. Turning to the River wolf, she knew she had never met him, and figured with everything aside she needed to introduce herself. "I'm Jaysyek, I don't believe we have met, but you must have spoken to my mate, Borden. Is the River run with..with this as well?" She was talking about strange creatures with foaming mouths, and horrible looks. She wanted to mention Corinna or Indru, to pull them in meant speaking of their loss. Sorry just didn't seem to cut it.

Skipping Calla, hope that's okay. <3

you do not know who is your friend
or who is your enemy
until the ICE breaks.
It felt like fire in his lungs, smoldering, smothering, choking. His breath was ragged, his eyes too warm, and something lay like a painful lump in the back of his throat. Calla, the spitting image of Rissa, and her angelic mother slowly came over to where he stood shuddering beside Slyscar's tracks, the smell of his pads lingering upon the pristine snow.. the brush of a flank against a naked bush. Jaysyek's quiet voice reeled some of his shattered thoughts in, pieced some of his back together, creating a coherent being and not just fragments of pain and memories: his white ears hid upon the thick fur at the back of his head, and his silver eyes could never quite decide whether to be sad or furious. To think that the culprit had been so near — if only Ice had been faster.. able to run faster.. hunt him down, and crush his windpipe, watch as his dark red blood would stain the snow... Vengeance.

Ice nodded mutely to her words, storing the peculiar name in his memory. Hadn't Corinna said it as well? Maybe. "Pleasure," he said dully, a conversational reflex from his past. The current circumstances were hardly pleasurable, except for the fact that they were in this together, stuck in the same leaky boat on a stormy sea. "I'm Ice. I met Borden, and Angier, relayed the news..." His voice dried out and disappeared like a leaf upon the wind, and he blinked his eyes furiously for a moment. Angier had mentioned the creatures, the sickness, and Ice had confirmed it; all of Relic Lore was run with it, as Jaysyek put it. Mutely he nodded, trying to gather his thoughts, his emotions — what had he even been doing out here, so close to the Hollow? Why had he come? Why wasn't he back in the Grove, where he was needed, supporting Marsh and Corinna? Whywhywhywhy.. he should go back, shouldn't he, especially now that Slyscar was on this side of the mountain?

Fuck.

The realization that he was here, in the west, hit him like a bear falling on top of him and for a moment he just stared blankly ahead. What if he went to the Grove? What if he managed to kidnap Aiyana, their distrusting little dark princess, by force? What if he did and Ice wasn't there and and and-? Fear pumped in his blood and he scrambled backwards a step. "All of the Lore is plagued with it," he said, his words hurried as he wished to return home yet couldn't just turn his back on Jayse like a madman and sprint off into the bushes. "We need to act, and soon, before they strike again — I, damn, he's here! You should go home, keep your kids close, I.. I gotta go back to the Grove. I have to protect my family." A soft keen left his throat, and for a second longer he just looked at them with kindness and fear mingled, before he turned on his heel and dashed off through the snow. If something happened while he was gone, he would never be able to forgive himself.
