Her words were a drone to him, barely comprehensible and nothing but an irritating buzz in the back of his head. He did not dwell on them or consider them at all, merely imitated the swatting away of a mosquito (quite metaphorical to his perception of her speech as well) by the flick of an ear, which then pinned against his skull so that they were buried in frazzled fur. He did a great job of completely ignoring the warning, though perhaps that show of deliberate ignorance was merely a reflection of his primal and untamed disposition. Instead of coming to his senses and considering her argument, his broken snarls only grew louder, and his shaky, queasy body lurched protest. Roach was a pathetic thing, standing their all sunken and skinny, all his remaining fur (no longer silver, but dull gray and dirty) standing straight up as if he struck by lightning.
One of Ranger's spoken statements did spark a flash of recognition that he registered and responded to appropriately. Her mentioning of his apparent doom and damnation upon consumption of the mysterious carcass was a laughing matter to him - if he ever took the time to laugh. He scoffed suddenly, breaking off his uneasy livid stature to open his bloody lips and speak for the first time it what was obviously a long time, "World could kill me!" he spat, saliva dribbling and spewing from his narrow muzzle, his wild eyes only growing darker as the seconds passed. His voice was rough and high-pitched, ethereal even - a clear indicator of his sickness. It was whiny and uneducated, it was slurred and had no soothing rhythm. It was just as broken and gross as his body was. "Eating means living. Not means death. You kill me?"
His anacoluthia actually seemed appropriate to his character, but that didn't make it any less difficult to understand him. It almost seemed like half his thoughts and speech remained in his head, while the rest was blurted out on a whim. What he basically had meant to say was that not eating would kill him just as easily if not more quickly than eating a diseased deer would, and was asking if Ranger would willingly send him to his death.
Hesitation consumed him again as another masculine animal came up to actually reinforce Roach. He did consider this (though deaf to the wolf's words) and relief somewhat spread over him. He did not plan to pass up the opportunity of a free meal anyway, regardless of the bitch that stood in his way, but having a beast to back him up was only that much more thrilling. Maybe he wouldn't get his ass handed to him this time around? None of this consideration would dare come close to Roach actually appreciating Weldering's interruption, but that would become apparent later on.
Two against one - Ha!
