For Jess and her Sagacity :)

As a pup who could once be part of a local brat pack when told not to wander into the dark shadows of the unknown, a forbidden territory suddenly appeared more interested in the eyes of a kid. But even pushing into adulthood with his two years of age, the roads less traveled harbored a secretive fascination as he wanted to find out why nobody would venture farther. Maybe it was a fool’s idea to roam at places where only the wild one’s could be found, but despite his urging curiosity he had never came into contact with monsters. Monsters that were probably used in vivid stories from adults to scare away the kids.

Pushing onward into the unknown, Chetan found Dragonfly Fenn a difficult place to navigate. He also didn’t feel easily at home. Every second that passed made him feel more uncomfortable, as if someone was watching him. This alien feeling heightened his alertness and allowed his adrenaline to course freely through his body; in other words perhaps he was a little scared after all. Not that he would admit to it ever at all. While his heart boomed heavily in his throat his paws pushed onwards into the enigmatic place. Every now and then he had to sidestep from the muddy terrain and treacherous-looking underground. If he became stuck while his paws slipped into the soil, he was certain nobody would hear his cry for help. Or maybe the monsters did.

After hours had passed Chetan began to feel as if he had been walking in circles, taking the same route over and over again. All the trees stuck to each other, giving him a very suffocating feeling. But when he came closer to the center and darkness slowly swept over the lands while the first stars began to appear at the night sky something pretty amazing happened. He saw lights, about a zillion of them. Fireflies. Now those were pretty amazing. His breath was taken away.

Fox pelt. While she hated foxes, she appreciated the fact that each of them had a relatively fine pelt, and this made her all the more eager to hunt them- not simply because they were vermin but because they were useful. They weren't the easiest creatures to hunt, and they could and would fight back- one had managed to nip at her cheek when the struggle came and had cleft through the skin with one of its canines. The fleck on her cheek was healing and was hardly a major wound- she didn't bother to treat it with the herbs Naira had shown her. She didn't particularly like that a fox had harmed her, but in the end, she'd killed it, so what did it matter?

Two fox pelts had been used to line her den, but she wanted more. She wasn't terribly skilled at skinning foxes- it was a tricky thing to do without mangling the fur completely. In the end, she decided not to skin them, per say, but to de-fluff them. No sense in having the smelly skin in her den- the fur would do. Each fox carcass was plucked for its red and white fur and the rest became a meal, albeit a tough, somewhat sour one.

She preferred to hunt at night, though even in the middle of the night hunting became more difficult as the forest- or parts of it at least- became filled with fireflies. There were so many that the blinking lights shed a faint glow upon the forest, making it easier for her to be seen. She tucked herself close to the shadows as much as possible, but it was difficult to do when the light source was constantly moving. Fortunately, they tended to move away from moving objects so she was able to keep in relative darkness.

As soon as she heard the sounds of another creature nearby she flattened herself against the ground, ears slicked against her head. She stayed there, yellow eyes peering through the darkness to see if she could make out who or what it was. All she could see, though, was a patch of darkness- a small area where the fireflies had shied away from whoever it was that was nearby. She stayed where she was and watched to see if they would make a move and come into her line of vision.

Deep into the secretive center of Dragonfly Fen was all but monsters lurking about. He had heard that they came in many shapes and sizes but all with a same common cause; to inflict hurt and harm upon innocent passengers. Although hardly innocent or youthful, the male was cautious not to victoriously saunter across the lands as if he was immortal, unable to get harmed by anyone. Instead these fireflies were mesmerizing his line of sight with their buzzing lights and the beautiful atmosphere they created. It almost felt as if the stars had come down, embodied into the little light givers called fireflies. If anything, this was unexpected but welcomed and appreciated nonetheless.

But even within the road less travelled, a path were scents began to fade away, he wasn’t alone. He was never alone. Roaming through this areas had taught him one thing, there was a great population of foxes lingering about. He wasn’t sure what caused their population to increase in size, whether it was good circumstances to breed or a lack of natural predators ..maybe a combination of both. It couldn’t be the last, he figured, since – as far as he could tell – wolves were on top of the food chain and they had to compete with lone wolves for small mammals. Foxes were also clever, they stole away food within the blink of an eye, making them not only smart thieves but filled with a newfound bravery as well. Or maybe it was foolishness for he would not allow his food to be stolen without paying for the consequences.

Suddenly his train of thoughts became distorted when he picked up a strange scent. Being more alert, Chetan immediately looked over his shoulder to see if he was being watched. A strange, tingling feeling overwhelmed him but he kept his cool while fighting off an uncomfortable feeling. There was nobody there, after all, he just confirmed that with his own observations. Still unsettled, the male kept a neutral stance as he spoke out loud while half-believing he was going crazy. ”Hello..?” He said out loud, yet with a reserved but confident voice. It was only just that, a simple greeting. Would anyone answer?

SShe waited, but there was no sign of the wolf in the distance. She saw nothing but the fireflies and the shadows that danced dimly against the trees. It was only when he spoke out that she began to regret not leaving sooner- if she'd turned and gone, she could likely have slipped away, unnoticed. She couldn't see how large he was or gauge how fast he might have been and she had no interest in being hunted like prey. The ground was soft and she would be sure to leave behind a set of tracks as well as her scent; she couldn't have anyone follow her back to her den. She might have to avoid it for the time being.

"Who are you?" She called out, making her voice strong and a bit louder than necessary. Weakness was not something she could display, not at this stage in her life. There was an edge to her words; she was a mother protecting her life as well as the life of the puppies she carried. "Where are you from?" She asked as well, knowing she would need to know that in order to save herself- if it was a loner, she wouldn't feel quite so intimidated- but if the wolf was from Poison Path, she would have to high-tail it out of there as swiftly as possible.

It felt rather strange knowing that somebody was out there returning his calls while everything else remained a mystery. These lands remained a mystery and she remained a vibrant enigma. His curiosity was prickled by the tone of her voice and her questions. Now Chetan wanted to find out who she was. From her loud tone of voice it appeared as if she was friendly or neutral at best; he imagined the voice of evil sounding much more hollow, manipulative and different. And she must be drowning with a likewise curiosity because the other choice was to remain silent instead. Someone had to cross the bridge and he decided he would no longer play hide and seek and keep up the guessing game. Instead he stepped closer to the numerous fireflies, trying to find the light where otherwise darkness remained. Here he wanted to become more visible, reveal his presence even before answering her questions.

”I’m Chetan. I’m not from around these parts, actually I’m quite new here. I hail from a place called East North Battle Ground.” Although that last name implied something about battles perhaps even bringing up thoughts of warfare; but nothing could be farther away from the truth. He was not a soldier and a name was just a name. Actually his history contained no tragic tale of big losses, blood and drama. He was just a young wolf searching for his brother and discovering the whereabouts of the world. But while he contemplated about his own life his interest grew even more as he wondered about the bold female. ”Now who are you?” He asked in return while wondering if she would reveal herself by choice or pick another course of action. All that he knew, all that he could tell was her gender – female – and the fact that she probably belonged somewhere. But that wasn’t enough to satisfy his urging curiosity.

Sagacity waited for him to respond, and was instead surprised to see something shift within her line of vision; at first only a mirage, the male's profile came into clarity when he stepped closer to the fireflies. She couldn't make out the true colours of his pelt in the dark, especially when lit only by the flashing of neon-green/yellow fireflies. But there were telltale markings of light and dark which made her believe he had a coat pattern of mixed browns, greys and white. A dash of black here and there, and she'd be damned if the glint of gold in his pelt wasn't just the light from the fireflies. If not gold then beige, she thought; he had to have some blonde fur, it couldn't be a trick of the light.

But he had a kindly look about his features, which was the more important thing. As he stepped toward the fireflies some moved around him while others moved away from him, to dance near Sagacity, thereby giving her location away. Slowly she stood, revealing herself, fully aware of the stiffness of her limbs; she was wary of him, protective of herself. She hoped, too, that in the shifting light he might not be able to make out the slight roundness behind her ribs- and any fireflies who danced too near her flanks were nipped at abruptly.

She didn't like the sound of the place he'd come from. In light of that, she looked him over again; healthy and strong, fit enough for her to feel the need to keep extra distance between them. Had he grown up in some military style, raised and trained to fight? It sounded like it. East North Battle Ground. "Are you a soldier?" She asked warily. There was a slight growl to her tone when she spoke again. "A Marauder? Mercenary?" She asked. She held her ground, though she was ready to turn and run if he made any fast moves. Another firefly flew too close to her flank, and she snapped at it irritably before she turned her cautious gaze back to him.

Somehow standing so open and exposed made him feel vulnerable, as if someone was watching him but he did not know who or what. The voice in his mind which echoed was soft and sweet as if he was being observed by a gentle spirit and a good soul; but he was not naïve to this world and knew that looks could be deceiving and flawed. He couldn’t fully judge a book by its cover and the impressions he filled in with his mind instead of taking note of how reality worked. Impatient he scanned the horizon while his golden eyes would try to decipher a figure or a shadow within the dark world that was only lit up by the dim light of the fireflies. In a way the entire scenery could be a picture perfect if it weren’t for the single sense he was in the company of a stranger.

From the darkness a silver-painted female revealed itself, or at least from glimpses he could tell. She was medium-built, he could tell from her figure, as she looked like a shadow figment of his imagination. Blinking with his eyes not once or twice he confirmed that this was, in fact, a real situation and not one instilled by the enigmatic atmosphere. For the first few seconds thereafter his tongue was swallowed and he couldn’t speak. It was embarrassing. Flatting his ears instinctively he hoped to cover up his lack of speech by appearing cool and poker-faced. Of course it was not really working, whenever Chetan felt a giddy tingle of nervousness, he had a tendency to screw up.

His introduction was met with a healthy amount of distrust. He couldn’t blame the female who, until now had not given her name, for being curious while throwing a lot of questions at him. In fact, he would rather be disappointed if she instantly adopted a friendly pose for it would reveal a naïve nature. Gladly he answered her questions with delight. ”A mercenary soldier? No, no, I am nothing of the sorts. I just left my parent’s territory and now I’m out here to explore the world and see what it has to offer.” However, that wasn’t all. ”Although I would like to be a guardian for a pack one day. You know, be all strong and brawly and kick out unwanted strangers.Hmm.” Which lead him to his next question. ”Are you from around these parts?” Hesitant yet curious all the same he set a step forward.

The way he answered, so quickly, she was led to believe that this was either a rehearsed speech or he was telling the truth. She couldn't quite make her mind up, but wasn't sure she wanted to trust him. He seemed to speak the words so naturally, that the rational side of her wanted her to stop being so foolish and just believe him. Did he look like the type to be a bruiser? Not particularly. There wasn't anything about his features that proclaimed any amount of demonic possession. His tone of voice was light and casual, even if his excuse for travelling was one of the oldest in the book.

But she'd done the same. He admitted, finally, to wanting to be seen as someone who was tough and formidable, something she didn't believe he would've made up. She looked him up and down again. He could fill in the part, easily enough. He looked quite healthy, and in a pack he would definitely be able to pack on some extra muscle should he want to become even brawnier. He seemed to have a sense of humour, though, unlike guardians she'd met who'd been stone-faced and stern. She'd relaxed a bit though she closed back up when he asked where she was from.

"No," She stated, a bit too defensively. She caught her breath and gritted her teeth. {b}"Sorry. No, I'm not from around here." She said. There was no way she was telling him where she was from. No one could know anything about her...Particularly not when she was pregnant. If he got a good glimpse at her sides, he might know, and if he knew, he might tell her pack. Then again, what if he found about her pack by accident? What if someone else recruited him? He might ask how her children were...If he'd even noticed. She simply had to hope he didn't. She tried to stomach a grimace when the young one within her, seemingly on cue, gave a kick. {b}"I'm Clover," She said in a quiet voice, finally, almost reluctantly. Even though it was a fake, she planned to be convincing.

Maybe she was telling a lie, maybe she was telling the truth. Chetan was hardly the wolf to second-guess everything and anything a wolf said. A stranger, even. He forgot most of the chitter-chattery small talk and only remembered the things that mattered. So if she explained that she was not from around these parts than he could have believed her if it wasn’t for the fact that she smelled from around these parts. But even a scent could be deceiving. Her tone of words insinuated a defensive response, as if she was hiding something underneath. However, like him this ‘Clover’ girl could also be a traveler, weary of strangers or fellow adventurers. She was cautious and careful. But he reminded him that he wasn’t here to play detective or to uncover the truth; sometimes things that remained hidden were better kept untold.

And yet there was always this inkling of curiosity like a rainy drop of water in an otherwise dry desert. It could probably lead to trouble but it also could lead him to answers that were so well protected by Clover. His golden eyes carefully wrapped around her silhouette as he momentarily contemplated his course of actions. He could leave her here to her own business, by her tone of voice it was what she wanted yet at the same time she had revealed a glimpse of herself. Why? Did she want to show him something? There were a lot of contradictions between her answers and the speech she hinted with her body language. To say the least, it confused him.

”Clover..” He toyed with the name as if it were like a ship hovering on a stormy sea. He kept up his neutrality. ”Do you want me to leave?” It was a simple question, one that he would oblige to if only to say yes. But then again, curiosity also killed the cat and he set a step forward. There was something about her silhouette – something about her stomach – but he couldn’t confirm his conclusions without stepping closer. Would she allow him to march forward and take a sneak peek at what could be a well-defined secret of Nomad’s Pass…?

Her ears flicked when he said the name she'd given him and immediately she felt frustrated with herself. He was a stranger, but suddenly she knew she'd lied to the wrong wolf. This was a stranger, and she couldn't believe she felt this way, but she felt that she shouldn't lie to him. It would hurt her more in the future if she lied to him. He could use it against her, make her seem like even more of a lowlife. And there he was, a saint in disguise, honorably offering to leave if she wanted him to.

She was alone. Now, in the presence of a kind stranger, she felt more alone than ever. And frightened. She knew she was close to term, and would be giving birth by herself in the wilderness. There would be other strangers, ones far more dangerous than he and with worse intentions. "No," She half-exclaimed, when he offered to leave, and she stepped forward. Her features were woebegone, her head turned and lowered with guilt. There, in the light of the dancing fireflies she stood, the shamed maiden.

"Please don't," She pleaded, tone softer. It was odd for Sagacity to show vulnerability to a stranger, but the circumstances called for honesty and in all truth, she needed help.
