How long, how long, how long

will we take to come undone?

The grass swayed in front of the reclining white wolf languidly. It was so bright here compared to her home, amongst the dense trees - she had no real idea what had bought her here beyond her own curiosity. Mismatched eyes, one gold, the other marbled with blue stared half lidded as the doe's grazed openly, completely aware of her presence and yet unfazed. Her earliest memories were of doe's, both of the cervidae and leporidae variety. A strange wolf taking her to their cold, dead bodies in an attempt to feed her their cold, sour milk. It had been so bitter compared to the sweetness she was used to but she had been so hungry, so scared, and so she had tried to swallow the tart sustenance down.

And then one day, a stranger came and the sweetness returned. The warmth of a mother pressed tightly against her made the fear flee, chased away by the warm canine scents that surrounded her. They were different to the first, which had smelled of rocks and dirt and the fading scents of many. These scents filled her mind with trees and moss and rotting leaves, but it did not matter - for the milk that filled her mouth was warm and sweet, and she knew no harm would come to her here.

She no longer dwelled on the stranger who had tried to make her swallow rancid milk. Her mother, a beautiful white wolf, had explained that she had been stolen from them in the night by a member of the evil pack that lived nearby. They wanted to sacrifice her to their wild gods, and the sour milk must have been part of a ritual. The brothers and sister that she vaguely remembered had not been so lucky as to be recovered by the sharp nosed elder, and so she was alone, but surrounded by her family of whites and greys. She was safe again.

But now she was alone, with the wind whipping at her white fur she allowed her eyes to begin drifting shut. She had travelled such a long way, and she was very nearly home.

Warm. Even though the sun didn't beat down above, the young male could feel the heat soak into his coat. He had traveled two days without trouble until the rain caught him finally, chilling him to the bone. This was not the old ash forest he grew up in, and as he ran farther and farther away from the old den, the fewer trees ventured to grow. Honey eyes stared puzzlingly at the field stretched in front until his vision grew blurry hinting a yawn. His brother's voices still fresh, his parent's memories still nagging at the back of his mind; hopefully he could learn to move on and forget.

The wolf admitted, the strange place got the best of him. Not the thought of other wolves so much but the thought that any one of them could be...him. That was the only reason he left, why he had to leave behind Able and get as far away as he could from those bad thoughts. Doubt plagued him constantly but he knew if he wouldn't of left his fate would of been much more darker.

Glancing back at the terrain in front once more, a faint feeling started to emerge that hadn't been there in a long time; peace. With the anxiety subsiding Ill stuck a paw out in into the warm, grassy ground. Company didn't worry him, in fact the thought of not being alone almost made him race into the rest of the field without daring to look. But of course that would be incredibly stupid, and as the wind nipped at the back of his tail the male continued on cautiously into the unknown.

If you know the answer tell me now

and I'll write up a calendar for our count down

Her state of rest was only interrupted by the occasional step of a doe moving onto the next patch of fresh spring grass or the chuffs and grunts of the stag that kept them. The yearling posed no threat on her own and so they continued their grazing with little more than the occasional glance in her direction. Had it not been so far into the spring, she could have been mistaken for a snow drift, too stubborn to melt as yet, but the gradual rise and fall of her chest would give her away were anyone to look close enough.

The wind was not in her favor to betray the cautiously approaching wolf, nor the height of the grass at her back in his it would seem. It was the more rhythmic sound of steps that pulled her half lidded eyes open, and just in time too.

The small yearling turned her head over her shoulder just in time to catch sight of the larger wolf about ready to steam-roll right on over her (albeit in a rather casual if cautious manner - although this could not immediately be detected by her slightly panicked mind). Her heart thundering in her chest she half rolled, half staggered out of his way slowly dragging herself into a crouched position, ears flattening at the indignity of it all, her small commotion causing the grazing herd to flee, only adding to her disgrace.

“Hey! Watchit!” she dared to gripe with much more ferocity than she had ever thought to possess. “Geez can’t a girl even take a nap without getting trampled about these parts?” she drawled to herself with a huff before throwing an apologetic look at the stranger. He could very well have been taken as unawares as she had. But her look quickly turned stony again. She had been the one almost trampled so it should be He who offered the apology...

The more comfortable the wind felt dancing around his coat, the more Ill sped up across the field. Back at his old den, fields were few and far in-between; in fact, trying to remember back, Ill couldn't account for a single meadow he had danced through as a pup. The exposure, but at the same time the freedom, was something that everyone should experience.

Picking up more and more speed, a shriek came from below that made the ecstatic male go from 20 to 0 in not even a minute. Tripping under his own legs, tangled in confusion, landing snout first into the dirt and the grass brought down a world of pain. It took a few heart beats to recover, what had he hit that would make that ghastly shout? With a view of the world upside-down, Ill stared back behind his rump to see a small, white figure clearly upset. Scratch that, they looked like they were fuming with anger. Where had they even come from, clearly it was too big to be a rabbit, and why hadn't they seen him and moved?

" What... " he shouted, lungs still gasping to regain lost air, " ...was that even! You...over there what's the big idea idiot! " Fumbling now, the loner attempted to straighten out and regain his balance. The stale taste of dirt and earth now filled his mouth in complete disgust. What a nice day to kill someone's mood.
