Pipe Smoke
(@Naira)
Pipe pawed at the snow beneath her with an intense look on her face. She was sure she'd seen a flash of brown fur somewhere down there. Some sort of furry little creature just ripe for the taking. And she was so hungry, she'd do anything for just a bite of fresh meat. There hadn't been anything to eat around the spring for days. It was like all the animals had just disappeared once the snow came. Maddening, that's what it was. Pipe was going mad with hunger.

As she searched for her meal, she paused every so often to scan the area. She hadn't seen another wolf in all the time she'd been here. It was very strange, indeed. Even on the trek from Alaska to here, she'd seen wolves. Granted, they were very thin and only showed up once in a while, but they'd been there. It seemed as though there was no one here. Where was everyone?

Pipe didn't have time to dwell on it, though. Her stomach growled with the pain of hunger. She had to find that stupid animal so she could have something in her belly. She was getting so skinny that her ribs were showing and the bright white of her fur was beginning to dull. Maybe it was time to move on from this place. Animals never came here and she was all alone. Loneliness was starting to get to her. She needed to see another wolf, if only to remind herself that they still existed.

As ever the tawny leader was on the hunt for food. If her children to be were to thrive she would need all she could get, and while the melting snows of the mountain had left the spring swollen and the ground beneath the snow boggy, biting at her frozen toes, she couldn’t shake the years of habit that told her water = prey = food.

Her footfalls were far from tactical, each ending with a squelch as she broke through the surface snow and hit the puddles beneath. Come night she supposed the water would freeze again, leaving a dangerous layer of ice beneath the snow, but by then she would be home, under the cover of her trees with little more than swollen trickles of streams to threaten her family.

Movement ahead caused her to hold her position, while large ears swiveled atop her head and golden eyes scoured the area to try to spot what exactly had caused the flicker. Finally her searching ceased when she spotted a skinny stranger picking her way through the snow. The wind was blowing the wrong way to bring her the scent, and while the stranger could very well be known to her she couldn’t know for sure until she got a bit closer.

Far enough from her home to hold no fear for her daughters, (well daughter as @Aponi was still missing) she chuffed in the direction of the stranger, a puff of steam leaving her jaws as her tail rose over her back, a clear flag to declare herself in charge of this situation. She took a few slow steps towards the white wolf and waited to gauge her reaction before closing the distance between them.

Pipe Smoke
A noise. Footsteps. A wolf. Pipe wasn't alone.

Pipe, abandoning her search, whirled around to face the newcomer. Her white ears were perked up and her tail held at an angle. Without a word being spoken, she knew that this wolf was in charge and had definite power. She could feel it radiating all the way back. Her instincts told her to show respect, but Pipe was determined to hold herself the way this wolf was; with an air of strength and importance. It was hard, though. Her wolfish tendencies made it so that she was inclined to bow to a natural Alpha like this one.

The tawny stranger held herself as though waiting for Pipe to make the first move. And so Pipe did, ever so hesitantly. She took a few steps forward and said cautiously, "And who are you?" She didn't dare say anything else. There was no telling how this wolf would react to Pipe's usual doses of sarcasm and roughness. She'd have to keep her big mouth shut until she could figure out this wolf's allegiance. Charging blindly into this situation could very well backfire on her.

With a wary look, she readied herself to either fight or flee. Realistically, she'd have to flee. She was weak from her insistent hunger. This wolf looked better fed and stronger than she. Pipe was no weakling, despite what her size may suggest, but she knew that this wolf would win in a battle. Picking a battle wouldn't do Pipe any good at all. She could get herself killed.

Sorry this has taken so long, the baby hasn't been very cooperative but hopefully that will improve over the next few days!

And who are you? As ever the question caused a momentary smirk to cross her features, a lip scrunching upward to reveal just a hint of the fangs that lay beneath. Surprisingly the girl showed caution, her entire body screaming her alarm, poised to flee. She was small, and no doubt would be far faster than the hefty woman that still regarded her silently, her own limbs far looser, the light of hunger clearly burning in her eyes. It was a testament to the scarcity of prey that she had come so far, to be regarding another of her own as a potential food source.

Her assessment over, she decided this girl might show too much promise to be run off without a second thought, and the question still remained unanswered... Who was she today?

Well as always it would depend. She could be the deserter, the misplaced Monarch of the mountain, the long lost Princess of a far off forest, murderer, usurper - she had been them all at one point or other. “Everyone. No one. What does it matter to you?” she quipped back as her ears settled more naturally atop her skull, her tail dropping a fraction of an inch as she started to slowly move towards the pale stranger, aiming to walk right past her unless she chose to follow. The tawny wolf was still hungry, and she was determined to find something, anything to take home to her slowly starving pack.
