Rook Lyall
Rook Lyall

If anything could be for certain, then the same could be said for Rook about enjoying being with Namid, as he found both the familiar comfort and ease of being with her just as if he were with a member of his family. She told him that her most favorite thing in the world was stars, something he should have known, given the nature of her name, but he still found the sentence all the more enthralling as she said it. She loved how they shined in the night, offering light in even the darkest of hours. She loved how there were so many of them despite being so small. As she continued, his gait deliberately slowed, he wanted to see her face as she told him about how her father had told her stories... stories about the stars and who they were. For a religious being such as Rook, he couldn't help but feel like a chord had been struck. Kiche, the mysterious brute who kept in touch with the family every so often if he wasn't actually staying on pack territory, had never explained his concepts of spirits or of God. Angels, Rook barely understood, also, but his mental grasp on the divine beings had roughly been connected with... stars.

After some time, he had stopped to look up at the sky, somewhat dispirited that the rainclouds had to cover them up. He closed his eyes, feeling the cold drizzle crash into his fur and drip down in heavy droplets. Namid continued to tell him about her siblings. She had had three of them, the eldest of the three succumbing to eternal sleep. Rook swallowed hard before turning to look at her... Namid, the youngest of two older siblings. The youngest. Like him...

"Sounds a lot like my sisters," he commented with a smirk and a brief shake of his head. "Trisden and Aiyana, they never get along. They still don't, I don't think. Bishop and I stay out of it all, as does my brother Renier, unless he absolutely has to break them apart. They've always been that way, for as long as I can remember." A nostalgic sort of smile also came upon his face and for a very brief span of time, he let the quiet creep in between them until he came up with his next question. "Have you ever been in love?"

The words, as soon as they had lifted from his lips, he realized probably made him sound utterly naive. He really shouldn't have cared, but flashes of heat collected on the sides of his face, making the skin beneath his fur tingle. He knew what love was, he had seen it in the way his mother and father looked at one another, he understood it further when his brother and sisters consistently looked after him, when he had finally come to fathom the idea of a higher being looking after him and loving him unconditionally as he was. What he didn't know was how it felt, how it worked, between two individuals who weren't family. That alone was a concept that had been foreign to him for as long as he could recall. While he understood that one day he would have to take up a mate, to fulfill his duties for the family as the male heir in the light of Renier's recent absence, he had yet to experience what that whole process was like... finding a soul that was unrelated to him and yet shared so many things and interests in common...

As always, she was surprised by the similarities between the two of them. It was always a stunning realization, when one would say something and the other could almost always pipe up with a “Me too!”. She listened with rapt attention at his description of his siblings, it growing ever apparent that he came from a rather large family. She supposed hers was a decent size too, but the way he described his life always made her think of a large, close knit group. A chuckle escaped her maw at the thought of the siblings, whose quarrels were most likely over little things like her own siblings had been. She missed her brothers when she thought about it, their games and jibs. There was always a closeness between siblings that could not be matched, and yet again her mind went back to Bishop and how she was keeping her from her own brother.

Her train of thought was interrupted by Rook’s question, which disturbed the brief yet comfortable silence that had invaded the space between them. Have you ever been in love? It was such a simple question, but at the same time it seemed very intimate. To ask someone if they’d found a person that they cared for so deeply and wholly enough that they were willing to devote everything to them, it was a heavy question in a sense. Namid thought back. She had loved, she loved her mother, her father, her brothers, her chief, her land…but they were all family to her. They were not intimate feelings of love, but deep seated affections that were placed by blood. Blood which demanded that you care for blood of the same kind. Therefore, had she really loved?

Looking over at Rook she found herself wondering, plagued by feelings suddenly so strong that she wasn’t sure what to make of them. Had she ever loved before? Opening her maw to reply, it was at that time that a large bolt of florescent lightning light up the sky above them. Thunder shook the ground and a yelp escaped her jaws, ears flattening to her skull as she unintentionally moved to press herself into Rook’s side. Her heart hammered in her chest and she swallowed, a blush creeping across her cheeks. Ah, a startled Namid. What a rare sight to see.

Lightning illuminated the sky in a momentary flash; Rook, who had not been fazed in the slightest froze as Namid pressed herself into his side. At first his eyes had merely widened once the rain-soaked evening had returned to darkness, but as he soon came to realize that it was Namid - not Bishop - who had found herself against him, he quirked a brow. He did not even dare to move, afraid he might unintentionally hurt her feelings or anything of the sort. To be frank, he was glad he had been there. He, himself, had once been afraid of both lightning and the thunder that usually succeeded it.

He peered down and across his box-like muzzle at her, his face sporting a rather amused grin. "Just thunder," he said, as though its occurrence were as common as the plain ol' rain itself. "It's all right." The yearling attempted to slowly pull away from her, just enough - maybe give or take a couple of inches - so that she could have space to straighten out and recover herself. Hopefully, though, he had not given her enough room to be or even feel embarrassed. Even if it had been several months since he had harbored a fear of the terrifying flash of light and the booming echo that followed after it, he had once been afraid of it before, too. He waved his tail in an attempt to reassure her, the interest in her answer to his previous question already lost and forgotten.

Instead, he offered, "Should we start heading back, maybe?"

Honestly, she had been too mortified to move. She’d basically just plastered herself to Rook over a bit of thunder, draping herself on him like a frightened puppy. The fact that she was afraid of storms had always made her embarrassed, and the fact that she had jumped a mile high over thunder made her feel even more embarrassed than pushing herself into her companion. As he moved a bit away she dared a sheepish look up at him and felt slightly appeased by his seemingly uncaring demeanor about what had just happened. Silently she breathed out a sigh of relief and straightened herself.

“Ah, yes. That might be best, it looks like it is getting worse,” She replied, giving a small reproachful smile. Any feelings she may have started to feel had been drowned by the previous event, left to be awakened or completely forgotten for another time. It took only a few moments for her to return to her usual demeanor as they headed back toward where they came, a yawn escaping her maw. She planned to sleep as soon as they got there, to flop over onto dry ground and snooze for a good while as exhaustion was tugging at her eyes. What a pleasant sleep it would be.

Bishop Lyall
Honestly Bishop had never felt the slightest inclination to "go hunting." Despite her love of eating, lately her stomach had been in knots and she hadn't been able to stomach a single shrew. And it all went unnoticed by her brother, who barely even acknowledged her as she slipped away. Bishop hardly required any more justification for turning back around casually after several minutes.

— — —

The rain covered up her white-lie and her scent as she closed in on them, her ample weight concealed behind a very forgiving bush. She had missed some of the conversation, but her imagination had no trouble filling in the gaps. Rook was now asking her some very personal questions, and she resisted the urge to retch. Who cared what her favorite thing in the world was? Namid babbled along for some time after that, and Bishop lost count of how many times she felt forced to roll her eyes. Stars? Cliche. But she worried about the way her brother was looking at her, enthralled, his eyes begging for more. She didn't understand. She crept forward behind another bush to get a better look.

She was hardly paying attention to some of the stuff Rook said next, although the topic of their sisters registered vaguely on her radar. Her concentration was directed more toward's her brother's expression. Though it was gone now, she was still struggling to come up with the words to describe what she had seen.

"Have you ever been in love?"

Bishop withdrew immediately from the bush. Her heart hammered dangerously against her ribs. Immediately she shoved a thought from her mind, not even daring to think about it. Momentarily, Bishop considered jumping in to the conversation, saying that she had come back empty handed and damn this rain, when suddenly the sky was split apart by lightning. She abandoned any and all plans and threw herself to the ground, cowering underneath the furious sky and the terrible, awful roar of thunder. Childishly, she wondered if the Spirit Kiche had spoken about was angry with her for eavesdropping and felt her face flush with shame. Yet slowly, hesitantly she crawled back to the bush to peek through.

And what she saw made her want to hurl.

She had no idea what had transpired moments ago, all she knew was Namid was leaning against her brother and lookin' all starry eyed. No.

Thoughtlessly she sprung back and away, deeper in to the forest and into the heart of the storm. She was soaked to the bone before she reached a fallen tree under which to shelter. The sodden brown girl could do little besides shake and whimper as the clouds sparked and cracked and somewhere her brother was huddled against a stranger.[/align]
