ha ha ha ha HA HA!

July 21st; Late afternoon; Partly Cloudy; 68° F/20° C

After visiting the remains of Darkwater Rapids, the Raven had managed to bring himself to a more happier, sunnier place. Even if the gray skies overhead only allowed so much sunshine through the cloud cover, the black-plumed aviator had been in better spirits upon discovering a few clusters of bushes that he had not realized had been growing on the edges of the Secluded Spring. He thought he could have landed in the strange plants, but upon lowering himself onto a rather spindly vine (which he had mistaken for a sturdy branch), he fell right through the small hedge, plummeting straight down into it with a surprised "AAAAACK!"

He tried to use his wings to heave him out of the shallow nest he had managed to get himself into. It seemed to work, and for a while he was flailing about until he was able to actually just sit on a dense part of a salmonberry bush. Making sure to keep a good grip on his resting place, he cautiously bent over to pluck a bright berry from the leaves beside him. He rolled it over his pale, pointed tongue before crushing it and letting the insipid juices drip over his beak and down his throat. The squished 'skin' of the berry was tossed aside.

Blegh!!!

The bird shuddered and shivered and cringed, obviously over-reacting as the berry itself barely had any taste to it. He probably should have tried one that was more orange in color instead of yellow. His beak parted and he stuck out his tongue. But then, he thought he heard something or someone coming... A cunning sort of gleam glossed over his eyes and he rustled around a bit before taking to the branches of a nearby tree...

Life in Hollowheart Keep continued to be quiet, Naira and the puppies mostly keeping to themselves and @Mapplethorpe oddly scarce as well, as he seemed to have withdrawn himself from the wolves he was supposedly leading. Meanwhile, Sagacity had gone missing, leaving the weight of patrolling borders squarely on @Chulyin's broad shoulders. With all of this on top of the usual reservation of the Keep wolves, Evann was once more left lonely. Furthermore, @Myrrhis had been banished from the pack after bringing one of the Willow Ridge pups into the lands - the young wolfess was still unable to fathom how and why the old healer could have done such a thing - and the gap her kind character had left behind was notable in the otherwise so cool Keep.

Still, Evann strove to fulfill her duty as a member of the pack, leaving her mark on the borders, and often travelling out to track the herds, trying to fill the gap Sagacity had left behind. Today was no exception, as her white paws took her out of the heart of Ghastly Woods and northward, soon coming upon the pond known as Secluded Spring. She was lowering her head to drink from the clear water, when a rustling nearby made her freeze in place. Ears swiveled in direction of the noise, soon followed by her entire head, chocolate-brown orbs scanning the forest for signs of movement.

Keen as any able hunter, she quickly turned from the water, moving on light feet back into the woodland, breathing deeply through her nose to try and catch the scent of whatever it was that had rustled around; I could use a good snack...

Curious beady eyes stared down at the forest floor, watching until he spied what it was who had come galumphing his way. It was a gray- and brown-pelted young woman. If he could have, he might have smacked a wing to his forehead and face. Of course it was going to be a wolf! Any canine with that sort of mind might have thought to follow him... Her own mud-hued irises came upward and quickly the Raven turned about on his branch, brandishing a red-orange berry in his beak. He saw her keep to the tree line on the edge of the Spring and, quietly, he smirked to himself.

As smoothly as he could, he navigated his way through the canopy, hoping the gaps between the thick leaves would not give him away just yet. He positioned himself just above her, his rough tongue brushing up against the salmonberry in his beak. Black-feathered wings spread out from his body as the twig he was perched upon shook and bent under his weight. He closed one of his eyes, still staring down at her. Eaaaaaaasy does it...Steady.... Steady...

He let the berry go and with a small, faint POP! it landed square on the top of Evann's head. Bullseye! The plumed aviator just could not help himself. His beak split in half in a ticked grin and immediately in a string of laughter. "HAW HAW haw haw haw hahahahahahahahahaaaaa!" he cried out, losing his balance more than once before he forced himself to move toward the trunk of the tree where the branch was a little more stable. He clicked his beak happily, calling out to the woman now with a more taunting sound that could have translated to something like "Hurrhurr, I gotchuuuuuu! I got you!" in the loosest of raven-speak.

As quickly as he could manage, he artfully swooped down and snatched up another berry in his beak, chirping like a chick as his feet found another perch high up in the elm tree.

She moved through the underbrush, ears perked, doing her best not to make any noise - a deed made more difficult by the layers of dead leaves and fallen twigs covering the forest floor - analyzing with every breath, the scents they brought in. There were many, most of them uninteresting, but others holding her attention for a little while before she moved on; smells of the many animals who had moved on these same paths before her, anything from deer to mice, but all of them stale and fading.

She was completely unaware of the bird, moving among the leaves overhead, its scent faint and not of interest to a hunter; Too hard to catch, too little meat on their bones... And certainly not a foe either, or so she thought.

When the berry hit, she jumped in surprise, the thud of the collision enhanced by her skull making it sound much heavier than it was. A yelp escaped her and she spun her head around in search of the attacker; What in..! There was no one to see, of course, and a confused growl started forming in the brown wolf's throat; then she heard the noise. Her head swiveled up to find the raven, eyes narrowing. The hoarse sound, laughter? was painful to her ears and they fell flat back in protest. The black bird laughed so much he nearly plunged off his branch, though not quite, and Evann snapped her jaws in irritation; she would have liked to sink her teeth into his wing, just to stop that vile sound.

It did end though, as the raven moved from his precarious position, but as soon as he had better support under his toes, he cawed another painful noise; clearly mocking her. The sable girl growled at him, though her anger was not that deep now that the initial shock had worn off. Though, when the black creature swooped down to restock on his ammunition, she snapped her jaws again; "Oh n... no you don't!" She warned, a low growl in her voice, but her eyes twinkled as they watched the bird, his obvious enjoyment was hard to despise.

"Oh n... no you don't!" the woman warned, to which the Raven merely continued to chuckle. "HURR-herr-errrrr?" his muffled voice came again, his tone seemingly testing her. Oh yeah? Or else whaaat? He chirped for sometime, pretending to find his bearings again as he shuffled back out to the thinner part of the branch. Cautiously, he lifted one of his taloned-feet, clasping the berry between his toes he clicked his beak. It seemed that he was going to eat it by the way he angled his head down to bring the tip of his sharp beak down to the berry's copper-tinted skin.

It was all in jest though, and as he clasped his beak over the berry again, he took flight, dropping the berry again. He somewhat missed though, the salmonberry landed with another pop! on the bridge of the woman's muzzle. He let out another silly string of laughter, chortling as he circled the air for a while before allowing the winds to carry him elsewhere. His fun might have been cut short but, by golly, that was worth every second. Perhaps next year he'd try it again with another wolf, to make them aware of the tart deliciousness that were Relic Lore's best kept secret: salmonberries, not quite salmon-flavored or salmon-colored, but surprisingly delicious (if one could acquire a taste for them).

The bird seemed less than frightened by her slight threat, looking right at her as it awed a string of sounds that almost seemed mocking; Is it challenging ME?! But the raven looked to have abandoned his game, settling in on his newfound perch to enjoy the treat he had picked himself. Evann lowered her head to tentatively smell the small, red berry, eyes still locked on the dark figure in his tree. The smell was, while not exactly unpleasant, less than inviting, and she wrinkled her nose, wondering how any creature could content themselves with food like that.

Just as she straightened up, the bird suddenly took flight, berry still clutched in its dark beak. Before she could pull he head back, he dropped his projectile, cawing gleefully as it struck her muzzle. Evann huffed and shook her head lightly at the impact, turning her eyes up at the raven now circling above. A small snarl left her jowls and she flattened back her ears; Enough is enough! But apparently the black bird realized so as well, calling a last, chortling caw at her before taking to the skies.

The brown shewolf shook her head, licking her lips as she returned her attention to the forest around her; Ravens..! She thought, rolling her eyes, you could never be sure what they might do. Casting a last glance at the berry bushes, Evann sighed and turned back towards ghastly woods; she still couldn't fathom what the bird might see in those tiny fruits, but then, maybe they just made good bullets.
