Garmr

"Don't you dare," Garmr thundered as Vali stepped forward. Garmr's tail swayed high and he kept his crown lifted, ears erect as he fixed Vali in his pale gaze. Never before had Vali stood up against him in such a way, and while it was shocking in ways Garmr did not budge an inch as he attempted to stare down his subject. Vali's snap was met with bared fangs and a deep rumble.

Between the brothers, something shifted, then snapped. Garmr could feel it, visceral yet intangible. He had felt his grasp on Vali slipping, and in his frantic effort to clamp down tighter and ensure his control over his pawn, he'd held on too tightly. Even before his brother turned his scarred face from him, Garmr knew that was it. He had lost Vali.

"Coward!" Garmr yelled after his brother's retreating form, spittle flying from his wrinkled lips. There was no point in going after him. Vali had shown his true colors, he had no dedication, no devotion to their life's purpose. He did not care if they succeeded. He was too attached to this physical, temporal world. It did not sing in his brother's blood as it did in himself and Skadi. He should be happy so serve in such a noble cause, rather than selfishly removing himself from Garmr's service. Then something happened. Before his very eyes, his brother's swarthy pelt changed from a once noble dark silver to a filthy, dingy charcoal. Why hadn't he seen it sooner? The damned dog had pulled the wool over his eyes. They had shared a womb, but they did not share blood.

"You'll burn in hell with the rest, you cur!" He cursed as the disgusting dog finally disappeared through the trees.
