@Gent RE: The sky darkens with ash from a distant forest fire. This thread is going to take place in the same area as this one. @Ryker - left it vague whether or not he's here so you can join if you like, if not it can be assumed he's back at the den with an adult. @Merys @Jynx @Sylva @Taslima - any of you feel free to hop in so long as someone is left with Ryker if he doesn't attend. The girls had practically begged for this. It was no wonder really, that the towering hill to the west drew the youngsters in like crows to a kill. She had to admit that the view from up there was pretty stunning, and the rocks just had to be fun for kids to climb on; Lucia and Aleris at least had proven just how much they liked to roughhouse and play mountain goat on the boulders down in the valley. Of course, it had taken a while for their request to be fulfilled. The puppies had been much too small at first to climb the rocky hillside, and leaving the territory with them was always dangerous.

Now though, the children were a much better size; beginning already to look like little adults with their mature coats coming in more and more each day. Her own fur was growing out in preparation for the coming winter. How time flew. They had changed so very much already, and while their growth rate was slowing down the Queen found it hard to notice. It was always too fast. It would always be too fast.

At least they were less and less vulnerable to dangers the older and bigger they got. That was of course some comfort. Their not-so-little anymore bodies were currently giving her quite the internal panic attack, as they scampered up the rocky and steep hillside and forced her to keep pace. Lucia in particular showed no effects of the long climb in her exuberance for this new place, but she never tired anyway. Every now and then Raela could contain her anxiety no longer, and spoke a quick “watch the edge” or “slow down guys” when they pressed her nerves just that far. Her youngest would sprint all they way to the top if she could, that much was certain.

Her eyes scanned the side of the small mountain as they passed out from the shadow of the last few trees, looking for the form of an eagle or mountain lion lurking nearby. The wind brought her no predatory scents; but all was not well. It smelled strange today. There was a faint trace of something, something off. It was a mere whisper of a scent; something the mother might have missed if she were not already so vigilant. She couldn't be sure what, but it only made her more nervous as the group ascended. Rae took a deep breath and cast her eyes toward the reassuring icy pools of her mate. "You smell that?" The Queen asked quietly, brows furrowed in confusion and concern.
