Reach for the stars

For the moment, Jynx was far too focused on the task at hand to be able to reply to the words the white stranger had offered. But he was right. Even if they did not succeed in getting a hare out of this, despite their teamwork, at least they would have had a good time. Besides, there would always be plenty of other times to refine their skills. Something Jynx, as a prospective hunter, was always keen on doing.

With her partner at the opposite entrance to the burrow, all but one last side entry was blocked. Still, the rabbits inside could bolt suddenly at any moment. She smiled to herself, with her head deep inside the burrow. It was nice working one on one, so smoothly, even if it was with someone she knew nothing about. She made a mental note in her head, that if all continued to go well, to ask the pale coated man if he wouldn't mind sharing some of his knowledge about healing. Even having some familiarity with the area was better than none, in case of an emergency. Underground, barks and growls from both wolves echoed off the dirt walls, causing the rabbits to stir. They jolted and scattered about inside, the shuffling of paws scraping against the earth. Her ears pivoted, and then her slightly muffled voice broke the silence.

"I think one is starting to move to the other side...to the right. It might make a break for it..." She cautioned, pulling her head out only momentarily. Craning her neck to the side to peer around the burrow to try and eye the unguarded entrance. Being far too wise to leave her post completely open, her outstretched paws, still well within the hole, served as a reminder to those rabbits that a hungry wolf was right at their doorstep. Just as she moved to stick her head back in to continue with a few more growls, a pair of light brown, perked ears emerged from the third exit. The rabbit was cautious, beady eyes wide as it checked around the opening to make sure the coast was clear.

Once he was he was in position his attention went to trying to force the rabbits out. He was urged on further as the scent of rabbit filled his nostrils the more the dirt at the mouth of the den was moved around as he tried to use any method to scare the rabbits into vacating the safety of the warren. He could hear the female’s attempts on the other side and the sound of the rabbits scuffling about inside. That told him that their plan was starting to work.

One entrance to the warren was still open which would allow the rabbits a way out and give the two wolves the opportunity to catch them while they were fleeing. So he and the female would have to keep a close eye out so they wouldn’t miss their chance for something to eat. Emrys was glad to have ran into the female at what just the right time, with her help he felt more confident about getting something to eat that day. Though he had learned a long time ago how to be a successful loner it didn’t hurt to have company during a hunt every once in a while and his current partner was very easy to work with.

During a moment of pause as he checked the uncovered entrance the females voice rang in his ears as she warned that one of the rabbits might be getting ready to make a run for safety. “I will keep an eye out for it,” he said to her, “If one goes the rest might,” he warned. That way she would know to keep an eye out too if he became too occupied with catching the first. All they needed was two to flee and they each would have a nice sized meal. He felt if everything went to plan they both could be sitting down to their meal in no time.

She smiled to herself. What good luck she was having! @Emrys was proving so far, to be an excellent partner to work with one on one. If they got along this smoothly when it came to hunting, then she could only imagine how nicely they'd team up when it came to the more...laid back task of studying medicine. Not that she didn't do well in pack hunts, with a larger number of wolves involved, and bigger prey of course. But due to not having any firmly established relationships with her pack mates yet, she could not say for sure how she and any one individual would get along, one on one in a hunt. Just like each wolf, their tactics of choice could vary.

She nodded, ears folding back to her skull as she inched her muzzle back towards the depths of the wren again. "Right...got it." She relayed back to him, now prepared to launch herself after any rabbits that would come bolting out. But it had been as such that her timing was just a little off. Neither of them had seemed to notice the lone rabbit creeping from the side entrance. And just as the russet colored woman had lowered her head back down, it chose that exact moment to make a break for it. The scuffing of soft paws against dirt, and the flurry of movement caused Jynx to jerk her head back up. Golden eyes landing on the fleeing brown form of their quarry. "Ah...damn it!" She breathed, scrambling to her feet to chase after her prey.

Not every hunt could go exactly according to plan. They very rarely did. Predators either had to adapt to the sudden change, or settle for a loss. In this case, Jynx and @Emrys might end up with only one rabbit, instead of two. But she was willing to take the risk as she charged after the frightened animal, teeth snapping. Coming up short was better than going empty handed. With her back now turned from the burrow, she couldn't see if more rabbits were fleeing or not. And if they were, it would be up to her hunting buddy as to whether or not to give chase, or follow her lead on their lone target.

Though he hadn’t planned on having a hunting companion it was nice to have one again especially now that they were trying to get the rabbits out of their warren. This is a task that Emrys felt would be impossible without a second wolf to cover the other entrance. He was also glad that they had worked out a plan so easily and there wasn’t any head butting about which way was the right way which also helped to get the hunting started. Emrys also felt that perhaps he had made a friend in the female that was now helping him. Though he was a loner he felt it was important to have friends, he knew how lonely it could get living the life of a loner.

Once he’d said what he’d wanted to say Emrys stuck his muzzle back inside the burrow to make more noise to help the rabbits along. The female’s voice affirming that she had heard him had reached his ears a moment before he started once again. He was determined that they would catch something by the time they decided to give up for the day. Then in a moment of pause he heard her words which indicated that something wasn’t right. When he poked his head around to the side he saw the glimpse of a small brown object which could only be one of the rabbits then a second later a larger streak of russet. It didn’t take him long to figure out had happened. Figuring that she was more than capable of catching the rabbit that escaped. “Don’t worry there are plenty more,” he called after her to reassure her that if she didn’t catch that one they would have another chance. So they would have at least one but the chance to get another was only moments away as he saw another of the rabbits peek out of the side entrance to check the safety outside. He watched and waited as the rabbit crept out further until it was far enough away that it must have felt safe enough to bolt further into the trees. That was when he took his chance and chased after it, Emrys was determined to catch the creature. All he had to do was keep it from getting back to the safety of its warren.

His voice in the distance, back at the warren reached her ears, but went unanswered. Her hunters instincts had kicked into top gear now and nothing would distract her from finishing what she started. The rabbit was fast, but Jynx, with her slender build typical of females, was faster. Her paws pounded at the snowy earth, nails digging in slightly for added traction. The rabbit, while still a ways ahead, skidded and turned, trying to out maneuver the wolf behind it. She would not be shaken so easily, falling for such tricks.

Knowing that the brown furred animal was bound to make a dash back to it's burrow sooner or later, Jynx decided to do her best to try and prevent it from swinging back around in that direction. She branched off in a slight arc, flanking her prey, cutting off any potential escape route. All thoughts towards @Emrys and what he might be doing were lost. If she happened to accidentally steer a little too close to him, she could only hope that he would react quickly enough to leap out of the way. Her warming muscles clenched harder, pushing her forwards in a new burst of speed. Jaws clicking against air, she made a grab for the rabbits hind end when she got close enough. But missed. Up ahead a dense patch of scrub would work in her favor, as it slowed the rabbit down as it tried to navigate through the fussy vegetation. Seeing her chance, the russet wolf leapt forward, heedless of the snagging branches and twigs, and closed her jaws around the neck of her prize with a snap.

Once the female had gone after her own prize it was left to Emrys to scare out another rabbit for his own meal. He thought to wish her luck but before he could get the words out she was already gone after her prey. So he turned his attention back to catching himself some late lunch. As luck would have It another brave rabbit decided to take its chances to escape the threat that was at the warren entrance.

Once the rabbit had ventured far enough from the warren entrance Emrys moved to cut it off from that escape route forcing it to run for the safety of the trees. Running at top speed the white male chased after his query. Trying to gain on the rabbit Emrys pushed himself as hard as he could, this was one of the reason’s that he didn’t much like chasing them though they were the best meal for a loner. The next reason became evident as the rabbit made a quick turn forcing the yearling to do the same. The rabbit tried this multiple times to try and get the wolf off its trail and in the end it made a vital mistake in trying turn back to the warren for safety. This allowed Emrys the chance he needed to catch up to the rabbit his jaws closing around the creature’s middle before he was able to stop long enough to deliver the fatal blow.

Reach for the stars

There was a commotion somewhere in the distance, back at the warren. Her hunting partner was apparently actively at work. And doing rather nicely, she might add, as she heard the scampering of yet another small body darting for safety. While still in mid chase of his lunch, Jynx had already secured her meal, which now hung lifelessly in her jaws by it's neck. She turned to face the still ongoing hunt, content enough to sit and watch as a passerby.

Every wolf had their area of specialty. In which they excelled. Hers happened to be hunting, yet she still always strove to sharpen her skills. So she observed @Emrys and his tactics as he actively pursued his rabbit. The placement of his footing, the timing of his turns, the energy placed into the various muscles of his body. She was not being critical like some wolves might be. Instead she merely watched out of curiosity, to see how his methods may differ from her own. The chase was swift but intense, and ultimately, resulted in a win for the male. As he secured his meal a smile spread at the edges of her lips. Still holding her own well won rabbit, she whuffed softly while trotting briskly over towards him.

Plush tail wagging slowly through the air, she dropped the body at her paws. Looking up at him with bright, satisfied yellow eyes. "Well then! Looks like we both made out nicely. One for each of us." She was proud of their team work. She wouldn't mind hunting with him again one day, should the chance arise. While she did have to get back to business concerning the pack eventually, Jynx was in no rush whatsoever. Besides, she didn't feel the need to tell him of her status as an Alpha. Some lone wolves might be intimidated by that information. Without a care, she stretched out on her belly right there on the ground to pick away at her meal. @Emrys was good company, and she didn't see the harm in dining with him until they parted ways. Nearly finished, a sudden thought entered her mind. All this time and she hadn't even introduced herself! Well, she would fix that! "Oh, I just forgot myself for a while there. My name is Jynx..." She offered with a somewhat twisted, embarrassed smile.

The chase was over and he had caught his query though there were times he wasn’t quite sure he would. Emrys was glad that he had succeeded in running his prey down because it might be the last meal he had that day and also he didn’t want to look like he didn’t know what he was doing in front of the female. He also had to admit that it had been quite the chase, the rabbit having done everything it could to keep from getting caught.

Emrys had learned long ago the tricks rabbit played to get a wolf off its trail and eventually escape but he wouldn’t credit all of his success to himself. The female had done her part as well in helping him to get the rabbits out of the warren in the first place. Once he was sure that his meal would not be running off he looked around for the female to see if she had been just as lucky as he had. It only took a second for him to notice her coming toward him with the rabbit she had been chasing hanging from her jaws. A smile crossed his face as her whuff reached his ears.

He gave a nod at her words, “Indeed we did, now all that’s left is to relish in our winnings,” he stated before following her lead. Taking a place across from her he began eating the much needed meal before him. “Thank you for your help,” he said during a moments pause between bites. It wasn’t often that he had a hunting companion especially one that he had worked so well with. He did hope that he might see her again so that they could go hunting together again. It didn’t take long for the rabbit to disappear leaving Emrys’ hunger satisfied for the time being and when she was nearly finished with her rabbit as well she spoke once more. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance and it seems I have forgotten myself as well,” he said with a slight laugh, “I’m Emrys.”

Reach for the stars

A dark salmon tongue swept out over her lips, cleaning away the last traces of blood staining the white of her muzzle. She felt a little better knowing that she had not been the only one to have forgotten to introduce herself earlier. "It's perfectly understandable, what with how focused we were on getting a meal and all." She chuckled slightly, shaking her head. Her golden eyes peered towards his icy blue ones in study. "Quite nice to meet you, Emrys." Another warm smile was thrown at him.

Glancing down at the remains consisting of nothing but fur and bones by her paws, Jynx was reminded of the caches that needed checking on back home. With a stretch of her forelegs, she slowly rose to stand, giving her fire tinted pelt a shake to loosen any debris. What time was it anyways...? How long had she been out? It didn't really matter too much, seeing as how productive of a day this had been. "I was glad to help you out, even if it did only mean a small meal. I wouldn't mind hunting with you again, if the opportunity ever arose." She said honestly. Glancing down to her paws thoughtfully, she remembered how he had earlier expressed his interest in medicine. An area in which she had no knowledge at all. "Hey...if you ever happen to be in the area again, I wouldn't mind learning a few tips from you, in your area..." She was referring obviously back to their brief chatter and exchange of their tasks of interest. "I could afford to be a little more well versed." She admitted, with a shrug of her shoulders. Allowing him the time to soak it all in, get up and stretch, Jynx then prepared to depart. Her brows knitted down, disappointingly. "As much as I enjoyed working with you today, I am afraid I have to get back. I've been away for too long, and I wouldn't want to worry anyone." She kept names, titles and status vague, concerning Grizzly Hollow. While she still lead alongside Veho, she knew she would not be staying with the pack forever. It was only a matter of time. Offering him a cheeky chuff and a wag of her tail, she departed. "I hope to see you around sometime!" She called over her shoulder, before vanishing back into the maze of trees. She was confident she had made a new friend, and hopefully this would not be the last she saw of him.

Emrys gave his paws a contented lick to remove some of the blood that had gotten on them as he had eaten the small of rabbit. Though it was small the hunger he had felt before was satisfied and would hold him until he reached his home. “We were very focused,” he agreed, “But I am glad that we finally had the opportunity to meet properly,” he said with a smile as she chuckled. He was glad to finally have the chance to learn her name in case he ever did run into her again.

He let his gaze follow her as he rose to her feet after they had finished their meal and once she was up he followed suit feeling it rude not to. With a glance to the sky he felt that it was getting close to the time he would have to start home anyway if he wanted to spend the night in the warmth of his den. “I do appreciate the help that you gave,” he assured her, “And I would love it if we were able to hunt together again if the opportunity does arise.” Emrys did hope that at some time in the future they would get the opportunity to meet again and hunt. He had enjoyed having the company she provided as well as the help hunting which was something that he didn’t get often being in his own. His ears perked as she started to speak once more asking him about helping her in his area. He didn’t have to ask her what she meant since they had spoken about it before. “Of course, it would be my pleasure to show you a few things,” he told her with a smile. Emrys did think that it would be better to help her once spring had arrived so that she could see what the plants looked like. He gave her a nod, “It doesn’t hurt to know some basics at the very least,” he agreed. That said she was excusing herself to return to her pack which he understood, “I enjoyed working with you as well and hope we have the chance to do it again but I wouldn’t want anyone to worry about you,” he told her. Though he wasn’t quite ready for them to part ways he knew that they would have to get back to their respective homes before the darkness set in and it became colder. “You as well, have a safe trip back.”
