Spectre Slayer
OOC: Takes place directly after the events in :Glycerine

The downpour that had caught the two wolves unaware and sent them to find shelter had finally abated, leaving Spectre to wake at the sudden sound of silence. It was a far different cry than the thundering roar of the rain pounding against the bark of the hollowed tree. Frowning, the pale creature pulled herself from the world of dreams, unable to hold on to the dream she'd been having. It slipped away as if in a fog she couldn't hold onto. Ice blue eyes blinked blearily as she yawned, feeling her jaws crack with the gesture. Spectre looked around and realized quite quickly that she was not in the pack den, nor was she alone. A faint blush crept up her cheeks, hidden by her fur as she realized that with the cramped quarters, she had become quite comfortably nestled next to her alpha.

Frowning, Spectre made a move as if to rouse the male from his slumber so they could return to the pack, but paused when she saw the line of mixed fur where their sides touched. It was...oddly entrancing to stare at the furs resting against one another. A soft exhalation of breath from her lungs sent both dark and light hair ruffling, mixing into shades of grey. She felt the smile stretching her muzzle and almost rested her head back on her paws to take advantage of the comfortable sleeping arrangements, but her conscience got the better of her. Sighing, Spectre shifted, nosing Shade's shoulder before she disengaged herself from their puppy pile to stand, stretching stiff limbs. "The rain has stopped, Shade.. We should return to Pitch Pine."

Say your prayers and stomp it out

Shade had been resting sleepily, dreaming as he had been for the past few days. But it had been another nightmare, one where the pack broke up in fire and blood. He had shuddered and woke up in the middle of the night, but the rain had still been pouring outside and so he had found himself sleeping again, only to be woken up by Spectre, the white female had been trapped with him overnight, their fur brushed and he smiled on the inside, happy happy moments. Shade felt like he always got into things too fast. He went too fast with Rosealia, a matter of days even, before they determined they loved each other. Shade wouldn't say anything unless he was completely sure that he loved Spectre.

As far as Shade knew, the female had no desire to be more than friends, and she was just a loyal pack member. "I'm up, I swear I am." He yawned, a bit of a joke mixed into it. Karpos and Adsila would no doubt be worried that he was not home to the pack den, curled up next to them. But sometimes he did go out on night patrols and so they couldn't think anything had happened to him, no, once or twice a month he was not there. Man did he have a story for them when he got back. Or perhaps, he wouldn't tell them anything. He only worried that Anastasia might question him. Though Ana and he weren't mates, she was essentially the pups mother, since they didn't have Rose and she would look out for their well being, even if it meant talking to Shade and being like a suspicious wolf of his personal life.

"The...uh, The rain has stopped." She mentally rolled her eyes at herself for repeating the oh so obvious statement. Hiding her embarrassment, the pale female squeezed out of the tree and into the open, taking a few moments to stretch her stiff limbs. Ice blue eyes looked up, admiring the stars overhead, the way the skies had cleared after the rather nasty rainstorm. "I do not know about you, but the smell right after a rain is almost like heaven.." Her words were spoken softly, as if to herself more than to Shade. A smile touched her lips before she wagged her tail and looked over her shoulder at him, blue eyes searching for his form. "Let us return, shall we? I am certain that the pack guardians will be worried their alpha has not come home."

Especially considering the danger from other packs thanks to Shade's ambitious nature and not so friendly encounters with the wolves of his previous pack. She smiled, turning her attention towards the world around them, admiring the way the moonlight shone on the leaves, some still shedding the affects of the rainstorm. She turned to head towards pack lands when a flash of white caught her eye, and she frowned, turning to face it. The pitch pine female stared into the distance, squinting and remaining still, even going so far as to hold her breath. What in the world had that been? A figment of her imagination? Were they not alone? A thread of fear ran down her spine and she spoke, her voice low. "Shade..." There was a warning tone to her word, the fur along her spine standing on edge. Had another wolf found them?

Shade had caught a glimpse of white as Spectre had started to repeat herself, and he narrowed his eyes. Then she mentioned returning, and how Ace would probably worry about them being gone and he nodded, forcing himself to give it up and focus on Spectre, until her line of vision caught white and she noticed, saying only his name. Who did they know, other than Spectre, who had white fur? Surely it wasn't Ana, who was the only alpha of territory right now. No, it had been something or someone else, and he started to worry that someone had seen something and taken it the completely wrong, at the very least they wouldn't understand because they had no idea what was happening and when.

He looked at Spectre, his chocolate brown gaze piercing her icy blue one. "Did you see that?" He asked suspiciously, he didn't like that at all. His eyes were calm though, he had a twinge of curiosity in them too. "Let's follow it or whatever that was and hope that it wasn't some vicious beast." He suggested to the female at his side. His sleek black fur was a bit ruffled from his slumber, but he would fix it later and make sure to give it a wash too. Whatever that was, it had something strange to it, like something that didn't belong and Shade wanted to figure out what it was and why it was watching them. That was the main thing that he cared about.

"Agreed." Spectre relaxed, knowing that Shade had also seen the thing she had caught out of the corner of her eye. She growled, low in her throat before turning and following that flash of white, ice blue eyes focusing in on it like a beacon. "Whatever it is..it glows like the moon.." She was quiet as she spoke, her breath just loud enough to be heard as she raced after the thing, her tail arched over her back. For the time, Spectre forgot her place was beneath Shade, and ran as if an equal to the leader.

In a way, she was his equal, at least for the time being, as they were both persuing some unknown to the same end - to find out what it was and why it was there. As she grew closer, she only managed to catch glimpses of the thing, a flash of white hide, a glimpse through the foliage. Spectre put her heart into chasing the thing, but no matter how fast she ran, or how carefully she watched it with her eyes, the pale female could never seem to gain any ground on the thing. Panting now, her breath coming in short gasps as the thing led them on a merry chase, spectre glanced to Shade. "This..thing is fast." The momentary look towards her traveling companion cost her valuable ground and the female snarled, refocusing on the task tat hand and attempting to force her legs to go faster, to catch the sprightly beast.

Shade nodded, following right beside the female whom he had grown to like a lot. It slowly broke into a chase when Spectre commented that it was really fast, and he had to agree. The two medium sized wolves were decently fast and so they pursued the beast. There was thunder and lightning beating in his chest, another glimpse of white. He wondered where the beast was going, and what that strange colored thing was on it's head. Spectre was right, it did glow like the moon and he couldn't help but wonder where it was headed and if there was a use for it. Perhaps it was edible, though with that speed, he doubted that they could catch it without the rest of the pack with them.

Shade thought to himself, should he ask her about things in her personal life? Or did they have enough of that conversation the previous night when they were in the cave waiting for the storm to pass. The certainly had a decent amount in common and he did like her. He had no idea if she liked him back though, and that was why he did not talk about his interest to her. Perhaps if there were some kind of clue, he would gain the confidence and he had become oblivious to the fact that the female had been nervous around him and that she was pining for him. Shade hoped that he had thought it through enough, he was going to ask soon, but now was not the time.

The female growled, panting between gritted teeth as she sought to chase the thing. Suddenly, as if her wishes had come true, the spectral stag stopped, and she found herself bursting into the opening of a small glen. Skidding to a stop, Spectre paused, her ice blue eyes widening as she stared at the pure white being standing serenely in the heart of the glen. She stared, unable to take her eyes off of it, and with the moonlight shining down upon them from the clear night skies, she could not help but feel the thing was somehow.. magic. That was silly! The beast was just a deer, nothing more.. but what was on its head? A frown marred her face as she stepped forward, trying to get a better look at the thing resting between the silver antlers of the beast.

"It...It is beautiful." She almost did not have the heart to go any farther, instead, Spectre shifted, her hind quarters sinking to meet the ground, chest heaving as she sought to take a moment to simply breathe. The stag seemed to care little for the two wolves that had been chasing it and began to browse the outskirts of the clearing, ignoring the pair it had led on the merry chase. "I wonder...where it lives. I have never seen a deer colored in such a fashion before." Wolves, certainly, but deer? They were all brown, or shades of brown at the very least. Spectre shifted, looking towards Shade, wondering his thoughts on the matter.

Shade nodded as they came to a stop and looked at the deer in awe, he too sank down to where Spectre had crouched, right next to her. "It's amazing, a stag with a white coat. I-I've never seen anything like it." He whispered back to her as he looked at it. "I think if we follow it, or at least a scent trail we can find where it lives. Maybe it is somewhere around here?" He suggested to the lady beside him. His fur on his neck and everything, was all calm and flattened, and he himself forced himself to be calm, though he couldn't help but want to belt out a lot of things about him, and how he felt. He would always keep it a secret, at least as long as he knew that she thought of him as a friend.

He wanted to be right for once, and he hoped that she felt the same about him. The options had begun to weigh down his pelt and he would talk to her. By him bringing her back to the Trail, she practically saved his life. She helped him through a tough situation and he was eternally grateful. But, she was at least his best friend. He wanted to talk to Capella about her opinions of Spectre, though it also wasn't really her business at the same time. Perhaps he could talk to Anastasia about how she would react if he were to take a mate. Would she step down or fight for her position?

The barest of nods accompanied his question,a nd Spectre swallowed as she got to her feet, slinking towards the pale white deer. As she approached, the animal bleated a warning and dashed away, and she took chase to follow. Not because she was hunting it for food, but because she wanted to find it for information. The pale female growled as she felt her paws once again touching the earth and nearly instantly becoming one with the air again. Ice Blue eyes focused on the beast until she had narrowed to a tunnel vision, forgetting what she was truly doing, or that she had a companion with her. Instead, she had focused solely on the deer running away from them.

AS she ran, her breathing became natural, the panting, the heavy footfalls of her paws pounding the ground. However, something happened with the deer to throw Spectre, and she skidded to a halt, quivering in fear. IT had just..Gone. The pale female approached where she had assumed its footprints to be and found the trail, following them until they just...disappeared. Frowning, the pale female lifted her head and sniffed around, attempting to scent the deer, but all she managed to discern was that she was absolutely lost...nothing smelled familiar, and the scent of the deer was nowhere to be found.

Spectre turned, looking towards Shade with a slightly frightened expression on her face. Quietly, she spoke and a few simple words slipped from her muzzle. "Shade..Were...were we chasing a ghost?" And to that matter, where were they? It was quite possible that the deer had leapt over some bush and continued its path, but to the mind of a wolf already unbalanced by the storm just hours before, she was far more likely to believe in such things as ghosts.

Shade had seen it one moment, it had a strong scent to it, he turned to Spectre and then turned back and the white figure was gone. It was like a ghost in the wind, never to return. His tail had a Lam like motion to it, though he was not mad, simply he was confused, very confused. When Spectre posed the question that had been in his mind at that moment, he shrugged. "I-I'm not quite sure. Um, perhaps we should go that way and see if it disappeared somewhere?" He pointed with his tail towards the brook once again, and it was a part of the territory that he had never explored before. He only wondered what secrets they might find there. Perhaps they could find answers.

He forced himself to remain calm as he started out of the bushes where they hid. He wanted to find out if the white stag was just a figment of his imagination, but Spectre had seen it too. Perhaps Spectre was a figment of his imagination? No, she was definitely real. Perhaps, if he had seen some signs, then he could ask her if she fancied a guy in the pack as more than just a friend, but he would either get a no, or someone else's name no doubt. He just wanted it all to be over, he wanted to say what he felt when he felt it. But he knew better than that. He would hold his tongue until he was completely sure.
