"Now I see the world through diamond eyes"
ORREN BARANSKI

He was lazing in a ray of sun that had managed to find its way down through the colossal trees, to the sparse underbrush. The summer had thawed the lands, even here, much farther north than Cedarwood Forest, and the warmth was a welcome change. Today, the sun was occasionally blocked by fluffy, white clouds, chasing across the sky like prey fleeing an invisible hunter; and while the resting yearling enjoyed that image, he was annoyed by the shifting between light and shade. It made it hard for him to fall fully asleep, despite him being tired from staying up late the night before. He had hoped to catch up on his sleep this afternoon, while most of the pack was resting, or at least close by, to watch over the den. But so far he hadn't had any luck, and it was starting to frustrate him.

Emitting a small rumble of irritation, the black-saddled boy shuffled on the spot, rising to turn around and find a more comfortable position. It didn't help much though, and he sighed to himself, resting his head on out stretched paws and starring at the dark den opening a few leaps away. I'm sure it's nice and warm in there... He mused, and despite his bad mood, a small smile snuck onto his face. Though he had only seen very little of the new pups thus far, his affection for them was steadily growing. These new sisters, that had been born here in the river-wolves' new home, were more than just part of the pack - though every wolf of the river was family - the girls were part of his parents, part of him. And the thought made his white-painted chest swell with brotherly pride; he would watch over them, protect them, take care of them and teach them, they would learn to be true Baranski's, princesses of the River!

Inna opened her eyes to find the afternoon sun filtering in through the den entrance, there was something a little different about it that day, normally it was a constant brightness.  She lazily rolled onto her back and watched if for a moment as it seemed to be bright one moment and a little darker the next.  Finally she rolled onto her feet and walked toward the den entrance curious about what made the light do that.  The sound of birds chirping outside also reached her ears which also made her curious about the sounds outside too.  When she had reached the den entrance she stopped for a moment to allow her eyes to adjust to the brightness of the light and giving her head a shake.

When she was able to see in the light of the sun she started to explore outside the den.  First she stopped to smell the grass that was just outside and then a bush that was close by.  There was so much that she wasn’t sure how she would get to it all but she wanted to know about it all.  Then her attention was caught when her gaze fell on another wolf, her little tail swished back and forth behind her as she let out a little yip to get his attention.  She bounded towards him but stopped a short distance away and lowered her front end till her rump was in the air tail still swishing back and forth in a play bow.  Inna then yipped at him once more.

"Now I see the world through diamond eyes"
ORREN BARANSKI

In the end he must have drifted off after all, as he was called suddenly back to attention by a sharp sound. Head jolting up from his paws, the large youth blinked rapidly to clear his eyes and recover focus on the world. When he did, he saw what appeared to be a small, black tuft of fur come bouncing towards him, and his eyes widened in a moment of stunned surprise. The pup fearlessly made her way to her older brother, stopping only when she was a mere leap from his outstretched paws. Orren watched her frozen, afraid that even the smallest movement would frighten her; Like a rabbit.

But she was no rabbit, she was a perfect, tiny wolf, complete with tail and ears and large fluffy paws on short, chubby legs. And oh was she beautiful. Unable to keep his face unmoving, the yearling smiled as his little sister bowed playfully, waving her small, spindly tail wildly. She barked again, a short, high pitched sound, lagging compared to the mighty roar of an adult wolf, but strong for her tiny lounges. Orren chuckled lowly, still keeping carefully still and making sure not to raise his voice too much. "Little Inna," He half whispered, voice warm and eyes aglow with unmasked adoration; "Look how big and strong you've gotten!" Until then, he'd only seen short glimpses of his sisters, mostly curled up tightly next to their mother; Seeing one now, on her own, so close, it was almost unbelievable!

The way she wiggled in front of him, it was clear she was in a playful mood, but he wasn't sure what to do, he was so afraid of hurting her. Still, he ached to touch her, to play with her, like she so clearly wanted, and he tilted his head, smiling brightly and waving his ears encouragingly; What should I do? There were no one else around to ask, Kisla was probably still asleep in the den, and Orren wanted to be alone with his dark sibling, he just didn't know how exactly to carry on; "You want to play, don't you?" He asked, a little awkwardly, smiling down at the girl; "Me too," Orange eyes lifted for a moment, glancing around the area, searching for something to give him an idea. Finding nothing, he looked back down; "But what should we play? Do you have any ideas?" He knew she probably didn't understand much of what he was saying, but it felt natural to talk to her, she was his sister after all. There was no chance of a proper answer though, and with a small sigh, The black and copper prince let his head fall back to his paws, looking up at the dark fluff-ball in front of him curiously, a small whine escaping him in his frustration.

There was so much outside the den to explore like the things that had made that noise which had drawn her outside the den  but when she saw the wolf across the way she thought that it would be much more fun to have someone to play with than to go exploring on her own.  So she’d bounded over and put on her best invitation to play that she could, with a play bow. Inna even yipped at him a couple times hoping that would get his attention and it seemed to have worked because she heard him say her name and that made her happy, “Inna big,” she repeated happily at him as she bounced on her little legs.  He knew her name so he had to be someone that was friendly, right?  After all her mother knew her name and her father knew her name so anyone that knew had to be nice.

When he didn’t get up she stood still, disappointed that it hadn’t seemed to have worked, and looked at him stretching her neck out to sniff him wondering why he didn’t get up to play with her. Maybe he didn’t understand that she was trying to invite him to play but she didn’t know how else to tell him.  Inna nodded her head when she heard him say play, she knew that that was, “Inna play.”  She said the happiness of hearing the word clear in her voice, “You play too,” she added.  She hoped that he would finally get up and take her up on her invitation.

When he spoke again she still didn’t understand what he was saying which caused her to tilt her head to one side in curiosity.  Her hears perked up at his whine and she wondered if he might be sad that he didn’t know what she wanted.  Finally she thought that if he didn’t understand then she would have to show him so she decided to pounce on his paws with a playful little puppy growl.  That should show him exactly what she wanted. Inna was sure that there could be no mistake about it now after all that was what she sometimes did with Lekalta to show her that she wanted to play.

His face lit up like the morning sky when he heard her screeching little voice, persimmon eyes glowing with unconditional adoration. She formed her words effortlessly, an seemed to look at him like he was the one who couldn't understand. It made his smile return, even wider than before, and he lifted his head a little from the outstretched paws, to offer her his full, unfaltering interest; she was a wonder, such a tiny thing, and yet she was the essence of the entire pack, the embodiment of Hearthwood River. Her dark, fluffy form was smaller than the rabbits he so often hunted, necks so easily snapped by his strong jaws; I could hurt her so easily!

He was terrified, and yet he wanted so badly to wrap her in his paws, to lick her scruffy fur and gently tousle the ruff at her neck. She spoke again, and every word made her brother's face twitch, mouth open slightly in an awed expression. Inna play, yes, he thought to himself, wide eyes a little sad as he watched her. Then suddenly, after an almost demanding comment, she jumped on him, his head jerking higher up as the ebony pup attacked his paws. His reaction was mostly instinctual, when his baby sister lunged at one of his outstretched legs, he waited for her to get a grip on it - her tiny claws and stubby milk teeth not even piercing the skin - then slowly lifted the paw up so she would need to rise on her hind legs to keep the hold. He shook the leg, careful not to be too rough with the tiny girl, then lifted it out of her reach and gently placed it on top of her head, pushing down just a little, but otherwise letting the mere weight of the large paw do the job of pressing her towards the ground.

Now that they'd started, it seemed so simple; she might be small, but she was a wolf! He needed to be careful with his strength, but she wouldn't break from the smallest touch. "You're tough, aren't you Inna?" Orren rumbled happily, looking down at his dark sister with twinkling eyes; "C'mon, show big bro' Orren what you' got!" He spurred her on, removing his paw from her head and lifting to his own feet, standing for a moment in his full height above her, then he lowered into his own play bow, stretching his front legs out on either side of her; "Show me how strong you are!"

Inna was happy that the boy knew her name but she thought perhaps she wasn't being clear about what she wanted since he hadn't moved to accept her invitation. It was true that he was much bigger than she was but he seemed nice so he didn't think that he would hurt her.  Inna didn't think that anyone who was nice would hurt her.  So it seemed to her that she would have to make herself more clear which she did by pouncing on his paw.  It like him was much larger than her own tiny paws.  Inna noticed out of the corner of her eye that her action had gotten a reaction out of him which prompted her to keep a hold of his paw.

The next thing she knew he was standing over her and lifting his paw away from her.  Having not let go of his paw she felt he self being lifted off the ground, a small growl elicited from her. Inna felt herself being gently shook till she fell back on all fours. The boy then placed his paw on her head effectively pinning her to the ground. She growled once more as she tried to wriggle free from the paw.

When he lifted his paw of her she bounced up happy that the boy seemed to finally understand what she wanted. "Inna tough," she said as he moved into a play bow of his own.  She knew then that he really did know. Letting out a small bark of joy she lept toward him nipping at his cheek before quickly leaping just out of his reach.

Inna seemed overjoyed that he'd finally engaged in her game, growling merrily as she played with his paw. The older brother chuckled happily at her viciousness feeling a wave of relieved joy as his former anxiety began to fade. Inna was tough, she proclaimed so herself, before rushing him at full, wobbling speed. She went straight for his face, and managed to catch the burly lad by surprise as she tucked at the white hairs on his cheek, before scurrying back, out of his reach. He stretched out a leg, batting at her fleeing tail, but only half-heartedly. Instead, a sudden impulse mad him howl out lowly, leaning his head back. "Owww you got me!" He exclaimed, falling sideways on the ground with an audible thud.

The burly boy stretched out on the forest floor, putting one paw over his face theatrically. "Oooh I think I'm done!" He moaned, whining lowly. Then he grew still, closing his eyes and slowing his breathing as much as he could. Tinkling with excitement he waited to see what she would do, opening one eye a jar to peek out under his paw. The sun had found another hole in the clouds, shining down over the clearing with a warm glow, reflecting in the river in the distance. Orren had to fight to hold back his laughter and remain still, eager to see if the playful girl would fall for his little charade; I think I need to work a little more on my acting.

Inna was happy that Orren finally understood what she had been trying to tell him and now they could really get down to the business of playing.  She let him know just how happy it made her that she had someone to play with. Especially on a day when she didn’t want to stay in the den and sleep, it was much too nice outside for that. Now that she could go outside the den she wanted to spend more time away from it.  What better way than a play session with Orren and she made sure that he knew just how happy she was that he understood her.

He had started it off by putting his paw on her and she had returned the gesture with a nip to his cheek before leaping away from him.  She felt him paw at her tiny tail as she managed to get out of reach of him.  His exclamation caused her to turn around quickly and tip her head to one side as she watched him fall to the ground on his side a paw over his face. Slowly she crept toward him her little nose wiggling as she sniffed at him before she ran to him and crawled under the paw covering his face.  “Inna make Ori better,” she told him licking his cheek.

“Ori get up now,” she said once she was satisfied that she had made him better.  She then crawled on top of his neck and nipped at his ear.

The tiny, dark pup wasted no time in showing her enthusiasm, and Orren struggled to hold back his laughter as she scampered about. Clearly little Inna had been borne with the same wild energy as himself, and as the older brother secretly studied her from under his paw, he felt an almost painful adoration spread within him. It was hard to comprehend how he could care so deeply about someone so tiny, someone he hardly knew, even if she was ever so much his baby sister. Still he felt a strong love for the little girl, and it only grew when he saw her reaction to his little act.

Inna spun around and looked at him wide eyed, her head tilted in a confuse manner. She didn't waste much time puzzling over the changed situation though, but inched her way towards him, nose first, seeming to investigate; Clever lil' one! Orren closed his eyes as she approached, trying to keep as still as possible. The game had evolved in quite a different manner from what any of the children had initially planned, for sure, but the black-saddled yearling was quite enjoying his role as he waited, holding his breath. Then suddenly, she jumped on top of him, wiggling under his leg, and he lifted it for her with a gasp of surprise. The confident declaration made in her shrill little voice made his whiskers twitch in delight, and her shivered slightly under her  squirming body.

Then she started licking him, and he had to give up, the feeling of her tiny tongue against his pelt and eyelids too much to resist. A gasping giggle escaped him and warm orange eyes sprang open, for a second staring right into Inna's puppy blues. Then she was moving again, and Orren shuddered with laughter under her fumbling little paws. "Alright Inna," He giggled while she made her way onto his back; "I'm better!" She stopped moving once she'd reached the nape of his neck, and the older wolf flicked his ears, rolling his eyes backwards to try and see what she was doing. It was only when he felt her tiny milk teeth digging into his ear that he realized though, and he gave a small woof in surprise.

Struggling back up to lie on his stomach, the older brother tugged his head forwards, trying to free his sensitive ears from Inna's tight little grasp. "Alright, alright I'm up now!" He relinquished, grimacing at the small stabs of pain radiating through his ear; the pup's teeth might be small and dull compared to his, but they sure could hold on. With a small growl, as much of playfulness as of irritation, Orren turned his head to the side and carefully rolled his shoulders, trying to shake his sister off without being too rough. If she wanted to tug at something, he'd prefer it be his less sensitive scruff; Or even better a stick! Still, he was quite enjoying the game, and he felt very happy to have found a way of interacting with his young sibling.
