hunter dem 1/3 -- tracking prey (slight PP toward the end, let me know if it's not okay!)

During his stay in both his birth-pack and his sister’s pack Greer had always always preferred to hunt alone. He was skilled enough that he was able to take down smaller prey without the help of others, for his streamline frame made him much quicker than his former packmates. Even some larger prey, like small deer, he had been able to fell on his own. But Greer knew, now that he was the leader of a pack, that he needed to put in more of a team effort. The thought alone caused a distraught groan to roll of his tongue. If he wanted wolves to stay in his pack the Archer knew he had to play nice with his subordinates. Otherwise they would leave and the pack would fall apart, breaking the heart of his scarlet mate.

As the sun began its descent beyond the mountain range, the shadow sought out one of the newer members, who had arrived with an ebony female he’d yet to acquaint himself with. Since the disappearance of Heigen the agouti had resumed the position as second, which meant that Greer should be spending time with him. Hunting with him. Socializing.

He called for the tawny male at the communal dens, urging the second to follow him. He was not sure what they were looking for—not yet—but they would find something. The mountain was overflowing with life; there would be something for them to sink their teeth into. Without waiting for a response from the agouti Greer headed off into the heights, his nose kept low as he began searching for a trail to follow…

Hunter Dem 1/3

A morning spent patrolling borders with his shoulder already hurting had been almost torture. He had to attend to his duties though, he had not been able to avoid them in the blood breakers and he knew he couldn't in the heights. With another winter just around the corner he wasn't sure he would make it through. He had the last one but with his shoulder already acting up so frequently he worried that it would he come much worse was it became colder. He would do his best to push through though, he had to.

Once his patrol had finished he'd gone back to the communal den in hopes of finding a little relief in resting it. He wasn't expecting to be summoned by his alpha so the call had come as a bit of a surprise. Hunting seemed to be on the man's mind which was just fine with Pyriel as he'd been planning to go out on his own in a little bit. It would better with the two of them anyway.

Not wasting any time he rose to his feet and left the communal den just as Greer was setting off. The warrior quickly followed behind as they set to work. He joined in looking for a trail, “Do you have anything in particular in mind?” He asked curiously. The pale man didn't as long as they found something he wasn't to concerned about what they caught.

Prey was different on the mountain. They were harder to find for there was not an abundance of foliage like the forests below. But it did not mean they were impossible to locate. It just took some patient tracking and a sharp nose. Both of which the shadow possessed—he hoped his second did, too. The shadow still did not know much about the tawny man, for he still isolated himself, spending most of his time on his own, with his mate, or his daughter. Socializing had never been something he was good at. But he was trying. For Kyna. It was always for her.

There were sparse trails littering the heights, his nose twitching as he tried to locate the freshest scents. The agouti spoke, interrupting his thought and causing his ears to swivel backward. He shrugged for he was unsure of what he was looking for. Anything. He turned to look at his partner, mercury gaze level. “Find something patrol?” He asked, curious as to whether the agouti had located anything of interest while he had been on patrol before returning his gaze forward. With flared nostrils he continued along his path, searching for something to captivate his attention and cause his mouth to salivate.

Living on the mountain had taken some getting used to since it was not the kind of terrain he was used to. Learning to hunt on the mountain had been a challenge but he had stepped up to it and had become more skilled than he thought he would. He wasn't the best by a long shot but he did bring game home often enough he felt like he was contributing his fair share. During his and Tinley’s time in the heights he'd hoped she would have joined him for a hunting trip or a patrol but she had not. More and more he had to wonder if settling with the mountain pack had been a good idea for them, he felt he was losing his partner.

Greer’s invitation was not one he could pass up. As second he felt it was good for him to have some kind of relationship to his alpha and if Tinley was going to be so distant he needed to socialize himself more among his pack mates. He was curious about what exactly they might be looking for in this outing if theirs. The question that was asked if him cause his head to shake. “Some Trails that lead further into the mountain, I believe the belong to goats but that is something I haven't hunted myself.” A goat was a formidable prey that would require the teamwork of more than one wolf so Pyriel hadn't attempted it.

Eventually he would bring the little Archer along on a hunt but for now the companionship of his second would suffice. Revon was still a little too small to be of any help, but observing was just as important. The bulk of Greer’s childhood had been filled with him observing both others and his surroundings. It was how he was able to sneak around, shadow-like, without others noticing his presence. He had become as silent as his own shadow, using his surroundings to his advantage, which was particularly useful in hunting trips. The mountain was different but not difficult—not if he kept low to the ground and ensured his steps were light and silent. While prey had adapted to the barren landscape over time Greer had adapted, too.

Goat. His ears twitched, mercury gaze narrowing. It would be difficult for the pair to fell one but not impossible. The tip of his tail wagged, determination glistening in his silver irises as he turned to his partner. “Goat do. Pyriel lead?” He asked, his head tipped to the side as he motioned for the tawny male to take the lead. He had been the one to discover the trails; it made sense for him to lead, as Greer had not stumbled upon a fresh scent himself.

Hunting post 3/3

His training had helped him to become an accomplished hunter whether he had always taken it seriously or not. The mountain though was a totally different beast then what he was used to. The terrain was a lot harder than that back in the blood breakers. He wasn't sure he had completely acclimated though he had been pretty successful on his solo hunts. He felt confident about this trip with his alpha.

The question had been posed so he told of the goat trails he'd come across. Knowing he couldn't take one down by himself he hadn't pursued them. Which as Greer spoke again of going after them and Pyre taking the lead he felt a little nervous about the whole thing. Now he felt that maybe he should have followed the trails if only to observe his prey. He gave the dark man a nod, “Of course,” he said looking around the area, “I think there is a trail not too far from here.” He took the lead that was offered and headed in the direction he remembered one of the trails to be. He just hoped the scents on it were fresh like they had been the day he found it.

Although the dark-eyed male was unfamiliar with the terrain Greer had faith in him. He had become his second by default, as the absence of Heigen only continued to increase, so the shadow knew that the newcomer would be eager to please. Why else would he have sought refuge in the mountain pack if he did not intend to contribute? Even if they not succeed in taking down the goat any meal would suffice. Just as long as they did not return to the Heights without food hanging from their jowls. They had to keep their few members fed and energized, otherwise they would not be able to defend their home or seek out potential recruits.

And little Revon needed to replenish her endless energy. She was the future of Aurora; of Greer and Kyna.

He nodded and motioned for the agouti to take the lead once more. The higher they went the more likely they would be to stumble upon a fresh trail. They just had to move fast—before the goats saw them coming. Unfortunately there was not much cover in the mountain range. But Greer had faith in his hunting partner—and himself. This was a good test to see if they could work well together; lead together.

Sooner or later Pyriel knew he would have to become more experienced with the mountain terrain if he was going to be in the heights for any length of time. Since he didn't have plans to leave anytime soon it was a necessity and what better time to start getting used to the more extreme places then now. He didn't have any doubt that he would do well after all the training he'd had growing up, it was all about adapting and that he could do.

Having been given the lead Pyre led the dark man to the trail that he'd come across before. It seemed it wasn't a one time use kind of trail either since the scents he found when they reached it we're faint but only enough to suggest the goats hadn't passed through in a day maybe two. This was a good sign, “It looks like we might be in the right track,” said the green eyed male as he looked ahead of them. “The scent isn't fresh but it isn't gone either.” That said he started to follow the trail looking back once to make sure Greer was behind him.

The stench of goal filled his nostrils as they approached the trail Pyriel had previous stumbled across, causing his mouth to instantly salivate. They were on the right track, even if the trail wasn’t fresh. It would lead them in the right direction. He gave a soft nod of encouragement toward his companion as he followed after him, his limbs buzzing with the thrill of the hunt. If they were able to fell a goat—even an older, weaker one—it would be enough food to last the small pack for weeks. Perhaps, next time, they could get the rest of the pack involved in order to take down a larger one.

First they needed to succeed. Whether it was with a goat or another mountainous prey, they would bring something back to the Heights.

“Watch horns,” he chirped suddenly, breaking his silence as his shoulders fell in line with Pyriel’s hindquarters. Sharp. Will fight.” The goats of the mountain were a feisty bunch. They would have to be quick; precise. “Find weak.” He quickened his pace in order to fall in line with the dark-eyed male while his silver pools remained fixated on the path before them. The scent trail grew stronger as they moved; fresher.

they could potentially abandon the goat & use the hunt opportunity below instead? :B up to you! <3
