Description: A little south of Lost Lake, on the eastern slopes of Serpents Pass, above the treelined, just enough dirt has managed to cling to the rock to support a lush meadow. Despite the steep slant, both thick grasses and a few stubborn wildflowers have taken root, carpeting the mountainside in green throughout the summer. This unusually abundant vegetation makes the spot popular with herds of Goats and Dall Sheep, as well as smaller grazers of the heights like Marmots and Snowshoe Hare – and in late spring, it is a prime hunting site for new lambs. But hunters best beware, as one wrong paw step might send them tumbling down the mountain, with nothing but sheer rock to break the fall.

The spring warmth had reached the heights of Lost Lake, putting an itch into even the most apprehensive paws. Leo generally stuck close to the Cove’s borders, leaving the scouting to his sister while he remained to protect their home – it seemed a neat split of duties. But there was one thing that they all needed to chip into, which often required departure from the pack lands, and that was hunting. Especially now, with two adults still resting to recover, and Aquene expecting her puppies any day, there was a desperate need for healthy bodies to bring home prey.

And if there was one thing that could get the young Vuesain to transcend his anxieties, it was duty to the pack. So, he’d taken a break from his patrols that morning and headed out early along the shore of the lake, in search of trails that might yield a catch big enough to feed at least a couple of the wolves currently stuck at home. As always, the water’s edge was ripe with tracks from all manner of animals who had stopped for a drink, but nothing too fresh. It would seem he had to go beyond the valley.

The sun had climbed quite a ways up the sky before he finally found what he was looking for – in the forerunners of Riddle Heights – but it was a price worth the trek! Above him, on a wide, grassy slope, a small flock of Dall Sheep were resting, several ewes along with the first spring lambs. Their scent carried strongly on the wind to where the yearling crouched behind a small outcrop of sharp rock, making his nose twitch. It was a daring undertaking for a single wolf, but Leo thought he might just be able to catch one of the lambs by himself.

Magg Slayer
Magg was patrolling. Yeah. She did that too! Proudly, with her head high and her brown eyes ever watchful as though evil could never escape her eagle vision. Maybe others wanted to run away from their problems (and like, she wouldn't say no if her family did want to move), but as long as her mom and dad wanted to stay, Magg was standing her ground and defending her home as best as she could. That meant following in the paw steps of wolves like her father, and who also had Nash's old job? Gale's big brother, Leo.

When she caught his scent, she didn't hesitate to follow him through the valley and up into steeper terrain. She spotted him before noticing the prey he was stalking, and moved to sprint the remaining distance between them with half a mind to try and startle the older adolescent. Thankfully however, the growing girl wasn't completely oblivious in her enthusiasm and slowed her steps again nearly just as swiftly upon noticing the fuzzy shapes past the yearling ahead. Oop.

"Hey, Leo!" she opted to whisper-shout instead, tiptoeing as quickly as she could to get to his side. Was he hunting? Did he want her help?!
