Eros wouldn't have been surprised either way, for Archer to have guarded Ally from such a story (or even simply to have not had the chance) nor for him to have shared the loss, especially to protect her. His head nodded, more so to give himself a touch more time to muster further words than anything else. She unintentionally helped, with that last little bit she tacked on. He blinked at the thought, but the answer was the easiest to give so far.

"Your father would have been proud you'd gotten yourself to a pack, and to family. That you were doing your best to be found and come back home."

Sanguine Cove hadn't been ideal, but it had been immensely better than being utterly alone in the wilds, of becoming so lost she'd never been recovered. His head rested again down on her shoulders, heavily this time. Eros was exhausted of trying to swim amongst so many indomitable currents. Sinking sounded so very peaceful, but where would that leave the remarkable, innocent girl he'd been given charge of? His heart still hammered, as though he were actually treading water, desperately searching for a lifeboat, even if all it had was room for Ally.

He couldn't give up without knowing she would be okay.

"When Seph died, it felt a lot like this. Everything changed all at once, including everyone I-we knew. It felt like, the whole world was falling apart."

This was worse, so much worse, but Eros wouldn't share that facet of the truth.

"Time never stops though, and... yeah... it got... easier."

Why did that feel so wrong in his mouth? The lies got more fluid as he went on, but the taste of grave dirt remained on his tongue.

"Because, good still comes. We lost someone we loved, but that didn't leave us loveless. You and your brother came along, and so did your aunts and uncles. We had family come home and new friends join us, and every moment big and small that comes with simply being together. We don't have everyone with us that we want, but we're never alone. Wolves need one another, and being together, that's what soothes the hurt."

Cruel, how alone he really felt, regardless of how many others relied on him. He wished he had something he believed in to share with her, but he was trying to pour from an emptied cup. Platitude was all he had left.

I guess it goes to show, does it not?

THAT WE'VE NO IDEA WHAT WE'VE GOT UNTIL WE LOSE IT

Ally watched her uncle as he spoke and desperately wanted to believe him, that her dad would have been proud of her. She wanted to know what he'd been thinking, heading up the mountain with that girl. She wondered if he'd been scared. It wasn't fair that he hadn't made it. They'd both tried so hard to find each other, and they were so close.

He'd been right; the mountain was a death trap.

Eros continued and Ally took deep breaths as he told her it would get easier. She blinked slowly. He would know, right? His mom had left, just like hers, and his sister had died, just like her brother had. She hadn't really grieved him; she'd never really gotten the chance to know him. She wondered if it would be easier, now, if Andy were here to grief their father with her.

She tucked her face into Eros's side and exhaled heavily. "You'll stay with me, right?" she said, voice thick. "You won't leave?"

'You'll stay with me, right?'

The words dredged up so many emotions and thoughts, so much inside of him insisting that it wasn't right he be the one she rely on. He wasn't fit, in so, so many ways. It wasn't fair, to either of them, that this was the only option left. It hurt, facing the reality of what life now looked like.

'You won't leave?'

Eros let out a silent sigh through his nostrils before lifting his head to place a small kiss between her ears.

"As long as you need me, I've got your back, kiddo," he assured, though... Eros had always been easy to locate. The concern wasn't necessarily his sticking around, at least not in his mind. His worry still was that Ally would keep returning to the wilds, that she'd leave him before he knew she could truly take care of herself.

"Wherever you go, I go."
