He stepped closer, and something in her wanted to take a step back, to maintain the distance that had been between them. That was what was safe, that was more clear now than it had been before. She didnt, however, instead stubbornly forcing her legs to lock. Her gaze averted to the side, she couldnt help but chase circles in her own mind, always leading back to the same, and worst question. How could Tomen, sweet, patient, infallible Tomen make her feel so uncomfortable? She could bet anything that if she'd repeated this scenario with any other wolf that it would have played out much, much differently. What was the difference?

His question made her feel a twinge of guilt. She very much wanted to just go home and throw herself into some kind of work, to get away from him for a moment (which had never been a desire before). That wasn't very fair to him, however. Anyways, why shouldn't they be able to shrug whatever this was off and continue what they'd been doing? Why was that burning sensation at the back of her neck so insistent?

"Um," she hummed to buy herself a few seconds more, eyes lifting to take in the forest again in the general direction of the bluffs. She knew what the right thing to do was, it was just hard to swallow everything down and say 'okay.' Finally her gaze driftef back to Tomen's face, to gauge whether she could really tell him no, and found that she couldnt. Watching him watch her, one of the knots loosened and her chest didnt feel so tight.

Forcibly she cleared her mind, and without those thoughts to crowd the air between them she could make it to him. Nineva pressed her cheek against his, nuzzling into the thick winter fur at his neck. She couldn't talk to him about this. That might just be the way things were. But he was still her best friend; he still meant the world to her. She took a few deep breaths, stealing these moments to remind herself of this before forcing herself to pull away.

"You're right. I gotta see you slippin' around everywhere."
