Hawthorne Selwyn
RE: Magpies have overrun the forest! || AW

It had been early that morning when a sound had disrupted her slumbering. She had heard it once before but not so loud and so many times. The young girl pulled herself away from the warmth of the den floor and clambered on disproportianate paws to the mouth of the den. She yawned as her front end met the earth in a stretch. Hawthorne knew she was getting bigger with the days passing. It had become obvious in her too large paws and large ears ontop of her large head. She felt a little awkward when running about but walking was mostly becoming a breeze. Not to mention she could also understand some words better, along with expanding her own vocabulary. So it should have came as no surprise when she shouted the first that came to mind as her puppy blue eyes saw the group that had been making a ruckus.

"Burdses!"

Without a second thought she bounded forward where the large flock of black and white birds had gathered. Some of them scattered as she came crashing in but others seemed content to merely hop around and give her angry caws. "Yaa! Yaa! Yaa!" Hawthorne did her best to mimick their sound as she burst with laughter. She had no idea where all of these burdses had come from but she was glad they were here! This was way better than sleeping in late.

Elyan Myrddin
Hoping it's okay I'm throwing Elyan in here.

It wasn't like him to venture out of the den, well the proper term for it would have been sneaking out while his mother and sister slept. He only did it because he couldn't sleep with all of the noise that had woken him in the first place. The little Myrddin wanted to know what it was that made that noise which kept him from going back to sleep. For once he was glad that his father wasn't around as he would surely have stopped him had he caught him. All he had to do was get out of the den without waking his mother or sister. Slowly and quietly he uncurled from her sister and slipped away from her. With one last look at his mother he quickly made his way out of the den.

Once outside he could hear the sounds much clearer a small growl of annoyance vibrated his tiny throat as he set off looking this way and that for what was making the sound. He had it in his mind to make it stop so that he could go back to sleep. After all he hadn't gotten his usual Twenty hours of sleep, it was very important. He hadn't gotten too far that it felt like he was a lot farther from the den then he should be. The sound of a girl's voice caught his attention as she said a word he didn't recognize. Bounding though tripping over his who paws he finally made it in time to see a puppy that he recognized with some black and white things. This got the little cub curious as to what the things were so he didn't hesitate to run up to her, “What they?” He said not yet knowing all of the words that might he useful.

Hawthorne Selwyn

A sound that didn't come from her new friends caused the young girl to adapt a rather pointed look for a moment as she turned to see it was one of the other kids. She hadn't spent much time around them and more often than not the young girl forgot that they existed. Her mother and those who truly visited a lot were the only ones that Hawthorne was slowly starting to remember.

Of course, her pointed look was short lived as she removed herself from the large group of winged beasts. The young Riverflow stood face to the face with the young boy before confidently saying, "Burdses." Didn't he know about them? Hawthorne really didn't know everything about them but she had heard about them before from her ma. Maybe she could help the boy out some.

"Looks" She told the age mate boy with a small smile and wag of her tail. Oversized paws carried the young girl at a wobbly fast pace back into the parlimant of magpies. With a loud chuckle and a high pitched "ya ya!" she broke up a few of the birds while most of them gave her angry squawks. Eagerly she turned and looked over her shoulder, wondering if the boy understood what she was doing now.

Elyan Myrddin

The black and white things he'd never seen before but he had seen other colored things like them. He remembered eo dering what they were but not having the words at the time to ask he'd never found out. He hoped that maybe this time the other pup might be able to help him, she was a little older and maybe someone had told her. He didn't know her well do he was a little hesitant but soon changed his mind and came a little closer but didn't want to get so close to the black and white things when he wasn't sure what they were.

He found the words needed to ask about the things that were making all the noise and took a small step back as the came right up to him. She was a little bigger than he was and she stood right in front of him speaking a word that sounded very foreign to him. “Burdses,” he repeated looking from the girl to the group of creatures she'd left. He repeated the word in his head a few times so that he wouldn't forget.

His mismatched gaze was brought back to her when she said another word, this one he recognized. Elyan watched as she ran back to the group of burdses making a noise like they had and a smile broke across the gray boys face. Clumsily he ran after tripping over his feet only once causing a few of the birds to take flight before they settled on the ground once more. “Ya ya!” He mimicked as he tried to jump on one of the birds that moved out of his reach before he landed on his large paws. “Chase?” He said as he turned his head to look at the girl.

Saying she was pleased when the boy mimicked her word might have been an understatement. Her tail frantically beat the air behind her and caused her rear end to even shake about in motion with her tail. "Yes! Yes! Burdses!" She chirped with pride and approval. Maybe this boy wouldn't be here to ruin his fun. Perhaps, if she could teach him words, she could teach him how to play games! Oh, a friend to have when mama wasn't around would be splendid!

Hawthorne couldn't help but giggle as the boy followed after but tripped. She still tripped when going too fast, of course, but that didn't make it less funny to her! She fell onto her side and couldn't stop her bad case of the giggles as he leaped after the birds. This boy was just a blast! When he asked about chasing (well really just said the word chase but Hawthorne grasped the idea mostly) she tried to clamber to her growing paws, getting out the last of her giggles from his exotic display.

"Chase!" She declared back with energy. The young Riverflow did her best to go after a few. Whenever they left the ground they didn't seem to go too high, swooping a few feet above her head before finding somewhere else to land. This gave her a new idea. Hawthorne threw herself forward into a small group of the magpies and as they swooped up she tried her best to jump up after them with her mouth parted. She could give mama a gift if she caught one! But as her mouth closed around nothing but air she learned a new lesson. What goes up, must come down.

With a less than graceful landing, Hawthorne hit the ground on her stomach. This was a rather new feeling and one she didn't like. The young girl instantly let out a loud cry. "MAAAAAAA!" It was enough to send a handful of magpies around her flying off.

After learning the word for the black and white things he looked at them and then back at the girl. She seemed very happy when he had repeated the word and even repeated it herself. His stubby little tail swayed happily behind him proud of himself for learning something new. He was so happy about it he couldn't help himself, “Burdses,” was repeated once more so that he could see the excitement in the girl once more. He couldn't wait to show his sister what he had learned and maybe he could show her too.

Then the girl was moving away from him toward the Burdses and he followed but tripped. That brought a response from the girl that had him tilting his head in curiosity, why was she laughing? But he didn't know the words to ask causing him to snort in frustration at his limited vocabulary. He pulled himself from the ground before he asked about chasing the birds. Finally she did stop laughing and got to her feet after falling on her side. He hadn't liked the laughing but that was soon forgotten.

She confirmed he'd gotten the word right and he watched as she seemed to put something together and was soon jumping up at the birds with mouth wide open. Elyan watched for only a moment before he went after one of the birds on the ground which flew out of his reach before he could get too close. His mismatched gaze went back to the girl as he wondered if she might have the right idea. He had turned to look at her just as she fell to the ground and a sound like he hadn't heard came from her as she called for her mother, at least that wasn't it sounded like to him.

Elyan bounded over to her stumbling only once before reaching her. The Burdses were forgotten as a whimper left his throat. He licked the girl's cheek to try and calm and comfort her. Again he didn't have the words to make her feel better, “Hurt?” He was able to ask.

Had she not been feeling so, what was that word the boy had said? Hurt. Well, then she might have shoved him away when he licked her cheek. Yet due to her current feeling and the discomfort that spread over her stomach and chest, she fully welcomed his words. She sniffled and whined. Without her mother in sight, she would have to accept the comfort of the boy.

Hawthorne tilted her head from her place on the ground to get a good look at the boy. "Hurts. You fix?" Maybe he knew how to make the pain go away or maybe one of his parents could help. The young Riverflow female looked out to the birds that seemed to have cleared out some of the area around them but still lingered close enough to be heard chattering amongst themselves. "Dumb burdses." She declared with a rather hurt tone. It was all their fault! They flew too high and wouldn't let her catch them! They were dumb and didn't play fair!

With a groan, the young girl moved from her to stomach to her paws before sitting down on her rump. She no longer cared for the birds that seemed to be all over. She didn't wanna play with them ever again.

It had been a bad turn of events as Elyan watched his new friend fall to the ground after trying to catch the Burdses. He wasn't sure what to do at first but he was worried for her and went to her hoping a lick to her cheek would make her feel better. He wanted to do more as she sniffled and whined but he didn't know what he could do for her.

The gray boy stayed next to her as she lay on the ground trying to think of what else he could do. She repeated the word he had used to confirm that she did hurt but then she asked if he could fix it. Elyan shook his head, “Don't know how,” he said apologetically. He wished his father or mother was there, surely they would know what to do. He was sure they would be able to make her stop hurting. His gaze went to the birds when she called them dumb, “Mean Burdses,” he said looking back at her before brushing his nose in the fur of her shoulder to offer more comfort.

The girl groaned before getting to her paws and then sitting on her rump. Elyan moved closer, “Find dad? He help.” The gray boy suggested to his friend.

Emrys Myrddin

The ruckus of the Magpies had been grating the pale leaders nerves all morning. He would deal with them if they hadn't moved on by the time he'd finished up his duties. After checking the caches to make sure they were well stocked he planned to go on his rounds. For that he would need Hawthorne, as she seemed to like it the last time he took her with him. He was starting to hope it could be a regular thing with her, something they could share as she got older. It wasn't a long trek to Hawthorne's den from the last cache he'd check so he reached it easily.

He stumbled upon them and kept out of sight as he watched the two children play. He was happy to his son and Hawthorne getting along so well. The pale leader couldn't help laughing along with them as the children each stumbled while chasing the birds and they were helping each other. It was good sight for the father too see until things went badly for Hawthorne as she jumped after the birds and fell to the ground. Emrys was sure the fall wasn't too serious but he was sure it had hurt her. His suspicion was confirmed when he heard Elyan ask the girl if she was hurt and she confirmed it.

Emrys waited to step out into view in case Hawthorne shook it off and went back to playing. He was proud of his son for trying to comfort the older pup. When Elyan suggested they come to find him Emrys took. That as his cue to go and check Hawthorne to make sure she was okay. “Where does it hurt?” He asked the girl as he brushed his muzzle against her cheek before bumping his nose against his son's and turning back to Hawthorne.
