@Muses Takes place immediately following This thread. Night hunt. Hunting post 1/?

When he had left for his short excursion from Fallen Tree Cove he'd never thought he would be returning with a new member. Moonshadow would certainly be pleased and it could possibly help relieve some of her worries. He did wonder what she would think him bringing home yet another female as it seemed that was all he ever brought home. He felt rather good about accepting Muses into the pack, he felt she would be a good addition as long as she kept to her word.

They had found a place to camp for the night that would suit them both. He expected that if they left early enough in the morning they would be back to Fallen Tree Cove by early evening of the next day. With their camp for the night taken care of they needed to find something for them to eat before settling down for the night to rest.

Muses had mentioned that she had come across some deer when she had arrived in the forest. Between the two of them he felt they could bring a deer down and maybe have some left over to take back to the cove. “Why don't you show me where you saw the deer you spoke of,” he said looking to her. He was fully expecting that they may need to track the deer for a short distance.

She padded daintily alongside her new alpha, ears tilted towards him attentively. By now, twilight had overcome the sky, and the world around them was rapidly growing dark. With a plsce to sleep for the night, it was one less thing to worry about, but Muses was eager to start on the hunt. She lifted her maw, nostrils flaring as she scented the air. The trail was old, but there was still potential to track the deer down still.

"I saw them around this area, so hopefully they haven't gone too far to graze." She thought out loud, eyes scanning the area ahead. Whether they returned with a deer or a rabbit, they would have to eat something. Bringing something back to the pack would only be a bonus, but Muses was eager to make a good and lasting impression on her new family.

"And if we can't find any?" She turned to look at the dark wolf from over her shoulder, eyes clouded with apprehension. It would be understandable for the alpha male to have high expectations, but she desperately hoped that he would not become foul tempered if his expectations were not met. Sensitive to anger, she had hated seeing her siblings punished for a failed hunt. Hopefully Kajika would take her effort and earnest attitude into consideration.

There were times the dark man did hunt at night but it wasn't often. Twilight was upon them and it was only getting darker which did worry Kajika a little but he didn't let it show. Muses stayed next to him as they moved through the forest on their way to where she had last seen the deer. It would be nice if they could bring in if them down but the dark alpha did not set his hopes up in case they were not successful. As she scented the air he did as well to see what it was she smelled and could catch the hint of a trail but it wasn't as fresh as he would have liked.

“Hopefully, we can follow the scent and see if it becomes stronger.” He had expected this since he didn't know how long it had been since she had last seen them. There would he a point when they would have to give up on the deer and maybe search for something smaller. He didn't know when that point was just then but if they didn't find the deer within a reasonable amount of time they may need to consider something else.

“Then we go rest and try again tomorrow either before we start toward the cove or on the way. We can even wait until we get home.” While it would be nice to catch something that night he wasn't worried. They could always eat when they returned home and while they would be very hungry by then it wouldn't hurt them to wait if they had to. He let her lead in their hunt to gauge her hunting skills more as a teacher than an alpha, sometimes it was hard to turn the teacher side of him off.

Slowly leading the way, methodically testing the air every once in a while, she followed the old trail. "When my littermates and I would hunt, we each had a very specific role, and the hunt would always go smoothly. I was the runner. One was the strategist, and the other executed the take down." She had not been as clever in the way her sister had, nor as precise as the other. That was not a reason for envy, however. There was no one faster than she, and she took pride in that.

"I think we're getting closer." She spoke with quitet urgency, a shudder of excitement running down her spine. Nothing was more exhilarating than the climax of a hunt. "I want to try and bring something back for the others." From here on out, their survival was critical to her survival.

She moved lightly over the forest floor, taking care not to make too much noise. With her whiskers, she was able to sense subtle shifts in the wind, allowing to move accordingly so her scent would not be caught. If she she tried her best she would earn greater results. Crouching low, she travelled swiftly, tail extended in excitement. She turned to her company, offering a gesture that asked, "Do you think we're getting closer, too?".

With his teacher side kicking in he watched her as she lead the way periodically scenting the air. He listened as she spoke of the roles she and her litter mates had during a hunt. This brought to him a suggestion for her. “Having been a runner during the hunts perhaps the role of scout might be something you are interested in.” With Des no longer with them they did need a new scout and as much as he wasn't sure he was ready to fulfill that role just yet he knew it was time they did. She was friendly and respectful enough that he felt she would do well speaking with alphas of other packs.

He too had been scenting the air and could tell that it seemed they were getting closer to their target. “It would seem we are,” he agreed. It seemed they might have the opportunity to have deer for dinner after all. “That is my goal too,” he told pleased that she would think of the pack so soon. It had taken him weeks to get the solitary mindset out of his system.

He moved alongside her as they made their way carefully over the forest floor. Each of his large paws was placed carefully so as to not crunch a leaf or step on a twig that might alert to their presence. The scent had become much fresher and if he had to guess they were very close. “I do, very close. We will need to be extra careful now. Do you have an idea of how you might like to execute this?” He asked. She'd seen the deer so would know of any that might be easier to take down than others.

Her ears perked at the mention of a scout role. That seemed rather intruiging, and not something she had considered before. "I would be willing to learn how to fulfill that role." Few wolves of her father's inner circle were allowed to become scouts, limiting the chance of outsiders interacting with the younger wolves. Unfortunately, Muses did not have time to contemplate this idea. She knew she had to focus on the hunt, and came to a halt as she mentally ran through their options.

"There's a fawn that is much smaller than the rest, quite frail looking." By now, they should have been bigger in hopes to last the winter. "If we can find it and separate it, then we might be able to chase it until it tires." She doubted it was as strong as the others, and so she was willing to bet their attempt on this single option. If they could succeed in pulling their prey down by it's back end, then they would be guaranteed a meal. "On my mark, we will go. We will try to push it towards the east, well away from the herd." She braced herself, planning the hypothetical route, before nodding pointedly at Kajika to indicate that they should go ahead as planned.

While there were still many options for Muses to consider giving her the options and letting her choose which would suit her best. He could remember when he had tried to make the decision of which role he wanted. It had been a hard decision for him but Muses seemed to know exactly what she wanted. “It is certainly something we can work on when we get back to the cove.” If scout was the role that she wanted then he would help her in whatever way he could. Since he'd done some scouting of his own he would be able to better teach her the role. It was something they could discuss later because they had a hunt to concentrate on. If they wanted to eat they would have to make sure no mistakes were made.

Having let her take the lead he also gave her the opportunity to come up with a plan that should guarantee them a meal that night. “That sounds like a perfect target for our hunt.” A small fawn would be enough to fill both their bellies and they would still have some to take back to the cove. The plan she had was a sound one as long as everything went well. “We can each flank a side that way it can't go either way and possibly escape.” He was sure she had this in mind but thought he would add his opinion of the situation. He gave her a nod as she explained the last of her plan, “We should get eyes in it before we set out so we aren't running blind.”

It was strange to lead a hunt; something she had done before but not necessarily a preferred role. It made her nostalgic for the old days, and a note of wistful longing settled into her heart. She had done well, but would it ever be enough? "We can get as close as possible before striking out. That way we can put ourselves in an optimal position." Now they were on a time sensitive mission. The longer they took, the more likely they risked exposing themselves, the more opportunities for making mistakes. If they rushed in disorganized, however, the deer would sense their lack of connection, and use the confusion to their advantage.

She squared her jaw, determined not to lose focus. Wordlessly, she picked a side, creeping forward steadily, stalking closer still to the scent of deer which was becoming overwhelming. The pale beast took her time, considering each step carefully, adjusting as necessary, if only minutely. They had only one chance to get this right, otherwise they risked going hungry.

Finally through the foliage, she could see the brow. of the deers' hides, their stark white tails flicking as they grazed. Her breath caught for a second, and her pale eyes scanned the immediate area. As winter drew near, they began to stick together for warmth. She was not surprised to see several together at once, but it made her task to locate the sickly fawn tricky. Finally, she spotted what she believed to be the target, playing towards the far end of the group. If they could get close enough, they could have a fighting chance. She then turned to the shadowy canine, once again waiting for confirmation that he saw what she saw, as she continued to creep closer still. If they were on the same page, then they could begin the tricky task of separating their prey from the herd.

So far during their hunt Muses had proven herself to be very capable in leading a hunt, forming the plan, and even picking an appropriate target. She spoke of them getting as close as possible before striking out at their prey. “I agree if we can. There will be less chance for it to escape and we won't have to expel so much energy in catching it.” With both of them having traveled that day the less energy they used the better. They still needed to rest that night so they could travel back to the cove the following day. It would also be good for them to catch the fawn then instead of having to get something in the morning.

The biggest thing was could they work together as a team to bring the fawn down. It had been awhile since he'd worked with another wolf in a hunt but Kajika felt confident they could. As she picked her side he went to the other as they moved toward the fawn. Both of them moved stealthy, and quiet toward their prey. He stayed in step with her still cautious if where he put his paws. His ears swiveled in his head for any sign that they had been detected.

The dark alpha kept low to the ground as he searched for the fawn that Muses had described. Some of the adults of the group were huddled and their tails flicking in a relaxed manner as they grazed. So far so good was the thought that went through his head. Then on the far side of the group he spotted a fawn that was smaller than the others and while his play seemed normal he could see this fawn wasn't as strong as the others. He turned to Muses and nodded that he saw the one she had spoken of. Now all that was left was to separate it from the group and bring the young fawn down. He didn't much like the idea of killing the young but he knew they would be saving it from a horrible slow death later.
