later afternoon 10/12
She truly didn't mean to get lost. She just wanted to prove to her parents she could be cool and helpful like her cousin, could find awesome places and bring home news and maybe even meet someone new and exciting and bring them home to join their little family. She just wanted to prove she wasn't as delicate as her mom always treated her.
Well, joke was on her because she didn't know north from south or east from west and she was lost almost as soon as she lost the sound of the river. Still she kept going, determined to find something worthwhile to explain her absence. Only, her absence went on and on and she felt like she'd been gone ages and now she really couldn't find her way back and she was starting to get worried.
Worried, and hungry.
She thought she might be getting close; some of the trees looked familiar, but that might just have been because she'd been going in circles. She didn't want to get her hopes up again.
The sound of a bird drew her attention. Sam looked to see a small flock of them picking at a large pumpkin, pulling the seeds and soft flesh from a hole in the side. Her stomach rumbled. Well, it couldn't hurt to try, right? She could at least put something in her stomach to get her through another day. Old pumpkin couldn't be worse than carrion. The pup barked sharply, chasing off the birds, and sniffed at the hole in the fruit. Hesitantly, Sam poked her nose inside and licked at the fruit pulp. It... wasn't that bad. She pushed her head further, nosing at her newfound snack, until half her head was inside and she came to the horrifying realization she couldn't back out. Her ears were pressed to her head by the pumpkin and she couldn't hear anything beyond her heartbeat. It was hard to breath. She yanked backwards, but the pumpkin only dragged behind her. Sam began yipping with panic, thrashing her body to try and escape.
